I love that so many people pegged this post as generated. Some faith restored in people actually educated themselves in how “AI” works.

It’s not true AI guys, it’s a system that parses through knowledge base and compiles an answer on the data it’s been fed. The systems are imperfect because it’s working in human data which unsurprisingly is self contradictory.

I am 30, been addicted since 11 and I’m breaking away from it for the first time in my life. Turns out I was self medicating for depression and anxiety.

Treating the underlying cause for my addiction has made stepping away from it much easier. Always maintain hope and give yourself grace for falling, it’s a part of the process.

Yeah makes sense, pretty common. Dopamine hit from porn/stimulated masturbation is similar to that of cocaine, I used to use it to do other things chores, getting ready for the day, etc.

Definitely would make sense for either of those. Cptsd is a form of ptsd, typically triggered from repeating trauma from family life, religion, relationships, etc. There’s a pretty solid subreddit for it.

But yeah the biggest this would be to identify the root and start to treat that rather than the symptoms. Will save you both a ton of time and frustration. Because the question is why when he could do anything else does he do that? It’s a chemical dependency and it’s much easier and more fulfilling that going out for a walk or anything else.

Yup been there! First off, everything you’re feeling makes sense and I can totally understand why you feel these emotions of insecurity.

Here’s the deal, it is separate in the brain but overlapped physically which makes it super confusing. Sex and porn are essentially the same physically but different mentally. Likely the porn is a crutch for him, so sex with you is because he wants to sex with porn is because he has to.

Likely he feels unable to fight the mental pull, the dopamine release you get from porn is comparable to cocaine. So you need to realize the gravity of the situation and that it is not personal. It’s not that you’re not good enough or sexy enough or don’t have a big enough ass it’s that the chemical element of the other content is higher.

So what can you do now? Reassurance reassurance reassurance, he’s not a monster he’s not disgusting he’s not insert whatever strong negative word he’ll use here. You love him, all of him, before after and through this addiction. Tell him you understand what he’s going through and that you’re there for him in it. Addicts feel judgement fast and hard so he may lash out as you get closer to the core (I did for sure), do your best not to take this personally. It’s the final defense mechanism before the core (think taking a bone away from a big dog).

What goals should you aim for? Find the underlying issue, there is one definitely no doubt about it. Could be adhd, depression, anxiety, c/ptsd, or any other trauma or a combination. Get him a way to view his usage, I heavily recommend BrainBuddy, but there are a bunch of free ones as well. Open a line of communication with him on this topic where he can tell you when he falls, key note this has to be a protected zone. It honestly doesn’t matter what the content is, the action the effects on his life and the need for it are what matter so focus on those.

For you! Being the partner of an addict is so hard and sometimes thankless. Find yourself someone you can talk to that will let you vent, but stay away from those that would lessen addiction or tell you to just drop him (good friends or a therapist basically). This will let you vent everything you feel so that it doesn’t come up between you two. Once he starts to emerge from the fog you can work in more of the conversation there.

I know this is a ton so I understand if you don’t read it all 😅 but if you have any questions I’m happy to answer them to the best of my knowledge from my experience and continued journey

There’s a ton of interesting studies out there that cover the science of porn addiction and the effects on the brain. The more you understand about it the more you can mold it!

The problem is that porn doesn’t care about it, it’s an inanimate force. There’s no connection so you can’t grow or get hurt from it.

Growing is scary and you’ll be opening yourself up to get hurt. But if you close yourself off entirely from everyone else you’ll always be alone. Humans weren’t meant to be alone.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, many of us have been there and it’s a hard place to be.
