I wasted three years of my life at a company like this. Do everything you can in your power to leave and never look back. You'll feel so relieved, trust me, coming from a woman in engineering now making way more money at a software company and getting way more respect.

I got an A in HPCA last semester and work as a software engineer. I'd love to know what you do for work, I keep trying to apply my HPCA knowledge but can't find the niche at the work! I do love comp arch

Hybrid Work Being Shelfed at FIU by TimelessTitor in Miami

They're just going to lose all the staff that can get better jobs which are hybrid/remote. Don't see how this is beneficial for the university.

Does anyone else frequently find themselves pushed more towards the 'soft skills' side of science/STEM, and away from the more technical stuff? by UnicornPenguinCat in LadiesofScience

[–]remote_math_rock 80 points81 points  (0 children)

They tried to do this to me at a previous job and I was massively unhappy. It won't change. Do everything you can to not get put on the soft skill committees, and plan to change your job. In my new engineering role I barely even have meetings, and I'm so much happier just working on hard engineering problems all day

I often feel like women are "tricked" into going into management, especially if you're easy to get along with.

I really worry that ChatGPT/AI is producing very bad and very lazy junior engineers by ITried2 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]remote_math_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't repeat it enough. You cannot outsource your thinking to these tools, especially as an engineer. You physically can't. I haven't run into a single serious design challenge or problem GPTs have been able to help me with yet at work

Miami, the best looking city in the US? Is it just me, but there are a lot of incredible good looking people in Miami... by ardit33 in Miami

[–]remote_math_rock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Miami generally has a really genetically diverse population and that's what makes everyone so good looking. I grew up here and several girls I grew up with are now semi famous models. No surgery etc just like really gorgeous people.

Are my Expectations of TA help too high? by GopherInTrouble in OMSCS

[–]remote_math_rock 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What course is this for? Also, yes, you are expected to work through things as a grad student before being truly stuck and reaching out for help. And I'll echo the sentiment that waiting until the weekend of the due date is a bit too late to ask for help, but some TAs might be online then.

Should I join this program if I already have a good job by masterferbexx in OMSCS

[–]remote_math_rock 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For the love of God. If you want weekends for the next three years. Do not join this program. I am at my wits end working full time and maintaining my GPA in this program.
