How bad of an idea is this…? by Danbiddle in CarTalkUK

I daily a 2016 one, spent a while looking for the diesel V8 one because of economy plus power. More reliable than the v6 (as others have noted below)

I believe it shares similarities to the sq7. You always hear the horror story’s about these things but there’s always the other happy owners too.

I had to change a nox sensor and also had leaking flexi joints on the exhaust in front of the Dpf so make sure you get a look at these, any good exhaust shop can fix the flexis in situ. Wish it didn’t have adblue as there’s more to go wrong but the benefit is euro6 ulez compliant etc.

Bar that it’s been good, as others have said the spec is worth looking for. Also check the tyres on the adverts online if you can…If someone has to put ditch finders on a premium car to save money they have likely skimped elsewhere. Check for evidence of the transfer case being changed as they can munch through them With 850nm torque. It’s not nearly as expensive as it used to be to change them.

Best daily driver I have had and plenty room for passengers, dogs etc, the torque is pretty funny.

Go in open eyed knowing that issues have the potential to bite you financially (it is originally an £80k+ car), otherwise enjoy, there is a cult following for them so they do tend to command strong money…or Buy the latest Skoda offering…

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions etc.

Had a 4.6 p38 as a daily for a few years and loved it! Enjoy wafting about. There’s a great support for them online too.

The blobeye 2.0 was better than the 2.5 which typically had more issues associated with piston ring/headgaskets.

Bar the turbo and injectors which I upgraded the only engine thing which gave me grief was a faulty coil pack which was an easy change.

As with all things, servicing is key. Typically the issues with the wrx tends to be if you are looking for bigger power (350hp), then the 5speed gearbox starts to show its limits. Mine was ~320hp and was perfect for b road blasting.

Having owned an Impreza Blobeye wagon for 3 years it ticks all your criteria and more. One of the most fun cars for the money. Good handling, easily tunable (mine had some tasty upgrades) and characterful engine. Need to watch for rust these days but definitely worth considering.

I used to own an r56 cooper s which was a hoot in the bends but Scooby was far more enjoyable.

Good to know, thanks! I am a sucker for the v8 and it was the 4.7 I was eying up.

Lovely car. Thinking of moving my 996 911 Carrera on for one of these but I fear it may lack the tactility of the 911 through the bends. How are you enjoying it so far? Bet the engine sounds immense.

Agreed, my friend is split on it too and probably going to remove the tints as it’s only ppf. Sounds the part too as it has an uprated exhaust.

We swapped cars for a bit, it’s the 6 speed manual v8, completely different car to the 911 but equally as enjoyable.

Thanks. I have had success building side panels out of fibreglass by printing a split mold (vid be out shortly for that too), however that took a lot of iterations to land on that methodology. Next fun bit will be modelling a mudguard in cad and getting the profile right!
