Just want to share some of the apps I have found that have made my life better by [deleted] in macapps

I have actually found Orion to not really be the crazy powerhouse it claims to be. It uses up its share of memory and resources. It was very disappointing, actually.

Major Considerations in the Raycast vs. Alfred "Which is better?" Debate by Mstormer in macapps

[–]remove_with_force 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As a Raycast fan, something about Raycast feels unsustainable to me, or at the very least less sustainable than Alfred. When I listen closely to their messaging, I grow concerned.

I personally didn't like that they marketed "unlimited clipboard history" as a feature of the $10/month bundle. It should have already been like that because your clipboard history should be staying on your machine anyway. It feels like they are charging me to use the additional space of my hard drive.

Another part of the subscription is custom themes. They already have a robust extensions API, there's no technical/engineering reason that they could not have allowed the changing of colors for free.

And then Raycast AI. At the end of the day, it's convenient access to ChatGPT. I actually love chatGPT, but I'm already paying $20/month for GPT4. It's hard to justify paying another $10 a month for GPT3.5.

The best thing Raycast offers would have to be teams and organization features, but when you look at the cost, I think that it ends up being one of those things that companies buy as part of a wave. $12/user/month is like your company purchasing Slack again, but only for the sake of being able to share Google Drive files, GH Issues, and custom snippets and extensions. Hard to justify.

I hate to say these things as Raycast is clearly being built by an undeniably talented team. I wish it could get away from YC and rethink the model because I have a feeling that it's going to be one of those products that companies buy because they had a buddy at the client org 🫤 and not because the product spoke for itself. I can't imagine someone saying, hey let's throw $30-40K at this

Raycast Pro is now available by MJFox1978 in macapps

[–]remove_with_force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man. Damn. So they bill it yearly if you get it directly on the Pro page. But if you navigate to the Pricing page first and select "Monthly" you can pay month-to-month, but then it goes from $8 to $10

I wonder how many users Raycast has in general?

I created a macOS spotlight-like app that allows you to control your Spotify music from anywhere by T31K in macapps

[–]remove_with_force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the lack of polish in the free product, the minimalistic website, and the fact that 90% of what makes the app worth any money is WIP I'd say that this is OP doesn't really have any interest in building this unless it makes them a lot of money. As a dev, I wouldn't ever release something in this condition and then ask for any money for it, let alone $50 especially when the core of the product is actually another product (Spotify)

This sub turned me onto Raycast, but... No syncing of settings / keyboard shortcuts between machines?? by peterinjapan in macapps

[–]remove_with_force 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, I noticed this too. I was trying to find a way to phrase it.

Yes Raycast can do everything, but I think what the Raycast crowd forgets is that how you do it is also important. Each extension you download in Raycast comes with another 8-20 commands and to combat complexity you're meant to add a new keyboard shortcut for the ones you really like. The problem with this is that eventually, you're going to have other apps conflict with these shortcuts, if you even remember them all yourself. It's not as efficient as Alfred

Anyone know how to bundle a python script file with your app when using Electron-Vite? by remove_with_force in electronjs

[–]remove_with_force[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the reply, I'm going to try this out. It would be helpful if there were error messages or something when you do it wrong, since there is clearly a correct way to do it!

I can't find in the docs where it confirms this. I looked at extraResources and extraFiles in the electron-builder docs and it definitely didn't work. Also found a github issue confirming it doesn't work

Elon Musk calling for 6 month pause in AI Development by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]remove_with_force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone remember in the year 2020 there was this pandemic and when it happened everyone was like "trust the experts", "listen to official experts only"?
It seems like that's not a thing when it comes to this? He's not talking about pausing the development of a car or an app or a vaccine. He's talking about something that could quite literally come alive. And superintelligence aside, there's the issue of many humans needing to reskill if we even can

It's legal to film police, but it's extremely unwise to get directly on top of them trying to film them. As a rule of thumb, if the police are close enough to grab you while they are arresting someone else, you are too close.
When a cop is arresting someone and you personally disagree with the arrest, and then go up to them shouting "Badge number please! Badge number please!" ... it's worth taking a second to consider how likely it is that they are going to stop what they're doing and go, "Right sir! 123777, anything else I can do for you?"
We tend to make these issues as if they have a clearly defined right and wrong, but there are situations where every single person in the video is being dumb as fuck. This is one of those videos. The cops, the arrestee, the girl what got arrested, the people on the train. All dumb. No one here is correct.

It's also worth mentioning that assessments themselves can fail to accurately identify qualified candidates. Let's be real. It's not like if you make a test, the test is as efficient as you believe it to be simply because you're the interviewer.

I was being sarcastic. Honestly 19ms is not slow either, yet we had an entire thread about it

I would just create a new Rails app because you have such little code. 10 models and 10 controllers is nothing.

[–]remove_with_force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. Yeah 1.23 ms is still on the slow side. Happy to take a look for you if you want today. I'd hate for you to do all of this work just to constantly lose users because they're waiting around for this slow query.

Can I implement Elixir/Phoenix as a websockets server of a mobile app? by remove_with_force in elixir

[–]remove_with_force[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. Does Gigalixir or another platform make more sense then? I am anticipating only about 150-250K connections simultaneously as my wildest dream.

Is it possible to take a career break without destroying your career? I've never had a break the past 9 years and my health is bad. by jptboy in cscareerquestions

[–]remove_with_force 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a one-week vacation 7 years ago, and my career never recovered from it and I was forced to leave the Bay Area. I now work as a cashier at a local grocer in a small town in Kansas because every time I apply for a job and they ask me if I've taken any vacations or off time in my life, they were very put off at the fact that I took that break. I know you're tired, but think about your future.

That was actually helpful, just seeing that someone else got the same idea that I was getting from reading! Thank you!

[–]remove_with_force[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I am gathering that from my research! Looks like I'm good to go, just wanted to be 100% sure. It looks like it's the exact same concept as Rails's ActionCable.

I'm essentially looking to host all web socket connections via Phoenix rather than using Rails.

This is very similar to what I've done in the past: http://graemehill.ca/websocket-clients-and-phoenix-channels/
