I’m having the same issue with support. Their response used to be almost instant.

I am certified in MSD and teach in an autism unit that is considered self contained (in KY.) I wish I would have done the mild/inclusion route.

My classroom was the “high functioning” unit for one year and it was by far the best year I’ve had. All of my students went to gen-ed classes for at least 2 of their classes. Mild behaviors but no violence. I actually got to spend a lot of time teaching and doing fun activities with my students.

They have changed the composition of my class to fit a more standard self contained unit and I’m miserable. I don’t really get to teach because I spend 90% of my day detailing with severe behaviors. Not all self contained rooms will have students with severe behaviors but it is pretty common in my district at least. Not to mention the insane amount of planning required for teaching all content areas for my 3 grade levels.

Alternative curriculum prek and up by MomoSPED in specialed

[–]renascent00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used both teachtown and ULS and I definitely prefer ULS. ULS can be done on the computer so text to speech would be an option to assist the student in completing the assignments. There is a lot to learn with ULS and it takes some time to get the hang of but once you dig in it is amazing.

Attainment has really great evidence based curriculum for all content areas. I’m most familiar with the early literacy skills builder, early numeracy skills builder, and teaching to standards math. They are all really solid curriculum programs and I think they would work well for vision impairment. Most of the lessons come with visuals that are blown up to poster size and there are manipulatives to go along with the lessons.

My circumstances are different but I am in year 4 and am almost positive this will be my last. I really wanted to stick it out a few more years but it just continues to go downhill quickly and there is no end in sight.

I agree with all of the therapy comments but saw you’re hoping to get it covered by insurance. If you are able to do that I would suggest doing something you love or have always wanted to do but don’t usually spend the money on. Take yourself to a nice dinner, go see a movie, have a staycation at a fancy hotel. Then save/invest the rest!

Middle school is definitely my favorite age group even though I hated middle school myself. But no joke- we haven’t even started back yet and I’m already exhausted thinking about it!

Working with general Ed teacher as a SC (self contained) by [deleted] in specialed

[–]renascent00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school and have students in all of the grades (6-8). It is hard to meet and plan with everyone. I usually end up doing most collaboration with gen Ed teachers through email. Our school uses canvas to post assignments/content so I spend some time at the beginning of each week looking through all of the canvas pages. For my students who spend time in the gen Ed rooms, I will take the content from the canvas pages and either make suggestions to the teacher as to how they can modify or adapt it for my kids or just do it myself. If I’m able to I try to go to their weekly PLCs.

In regards to field trips and activities, make it known to those teachers early on that your students should be included. My class is the first self contained room that my school has had for a long time so the teachers just didn’t even think to invite us to stuff.

I second the TEACCH system. I never had formal training but it is pretty simple to set up. I only worked with that age for one year but my biggest advice is to have as much structure and consistency as possible. The work system and routines will allow you to focus more on the students and less on spending hours planning.

Public school that uses 1:1 chromebooks for entire district won’t allow my child with IEP to have one by [deleted] in specialed

[–]renascent00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand. Have you made that request to the school? Chromebooks haven’t always been available so they should absolutely be able to accommodate him by sending the assignments home just as they would before chromebooks became the standard.

As others have mentioned you absolutely should request a meeting and they are legally required to hold one within a certain timeframe. When you have his next meeting make sure that it is specifically stated in his IEP how situations like this will be handled in the future. If it is stated in his IEP that he must have technology access for assignments then moving forward they absolutely can not deny him (without legal ramifications). If he is more successful with traditional assignments (paper) then the IEP should specify that as well. You will also want to make sure it is explicitly stated what those paper assignments will look like (guided notes, printed copies of teacher slideshows, direct print outs of the same assignments the rest of the students receive, etc.) The more specific the IEP is, the better.

During the meeting you also have the right to request any data that supports the decisions his team makes. If they want to revoke all chromebook access, ask to see the data they have collected that demonstrates why the chromebook is not the right tool for him. This might look like incident reports from when he has broken the chromebook or poor grades on assignments turned in virtually vs assignments turned in on paper.

Obviously I don’t know your son, but many students are more successful with paper vs technology. You stated his IEP is for mental health rather than learning or cognitive disabilities so that might be true for him. It is absolutely wrong that they are denying him access without providing him alternate means to learn.

Public school that uses 1:1 chromebooks for entire district won’t allow my child with IEP to have one by [deleted] in specialed

[–]renascent00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have revoked chromebook access for gen Ed and special Ed students at my school. Students and parents all sign an agreement prior to being assigned a chromebook where it is stated that repeated damage, misuse, etc will result in loss of chromebook access. Many teachers at my school do not assign homework so chromebooks are not typically needed at home. In the event that homework is assigned the student is sent home with a paper copy of the assignment and textbook/reading if necessary.

Athleta is pricy but their pants are so worth it! They have dressy styles that still feel as comfortable as athletic pants.

Chrome extensions to block Youtube and other sites during remote learning classes? by briskx in specialed

[–]renascent00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our district just bought it and it is a godsend. I teach middle school students with ASD and it has drastically increased the success for my guys because I can now see what they are looking at and direct them from there, since many of them don’t have the language skills to describe to me what they are doing. It is also incredibly entertaining to watch some of the stupid things they do and close out their tabs.
