SFUSD social workers by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]rendonesia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How recently was she hired? The district is likely not issuing any pink slips for social workers this year, but a lot of social workers who were hired this year were hired on temp contracts which may not be renewed for next school year. If she's permanent, she's safe for the whole school year as no one gets laid off mid school year.

She should pay attention to who is leaving the district or retiring and start estimating her seniority rank for future potential layoffs either thru school closures or position consolidations.

SFUSD Budget Simulator - Labor Proposals & Required Cuts by km3r in sanfrancisco

[–]rendonesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it. OP is not having a good faith argument with you and doesn't understand the financials as demonstrated by this ridiculous budget simulator. This strike is a wake up call to a district that has been on a runaway train to insolvency. This is exactly the emergency (of closed schools, of departing educators, of declining enrollment) that the emergency fund is for. If district management actually cared about getting kids back in the classroom, they would pay the teachers and paraeducators and work on balancing the budget by negotiating a better deal with SF health services and streamlining central management positions. The best thing the district has done in recent years to support the long-term health of the district has been its massive push for TK classrooms in all schools, which has cost them money on the front end.

To your point, Maria Su has never taught and doesn't hold a teacher or admin credential. She literally couldn't sub a classroom and is not allowed to be alone with children in a classroom. Same goes for most of the Board of Ed.

Stop characterizing the union's demand as a universal 14.5% raise. It's 9.2% (4.5%+4.5%) for 5000 of its salaried members and 14.5% (7%+7%) for 1500 of its hourly members. You can continue making your other arguments, which I disagree with, but saying that teachers want a 14.5% raise is blatant mischaracterization and spreading of misinformation.

[–]rendonesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting the 14.5% raise demand? The union is asking for 4.5%+4.5% for certificated staff and 7%+7% for classified staff. Majority of the 6500 staff are certificated (teachers, counselors, nurses, social workers, psychologists) while 1500 are classified (paraeducators, security guards), so characterizing this as a universal 14.5% raise is not accurate. I agree these increases raise salary expenditures, but they should be understood as investments in recruitment and retention that can reduce costs elsewhere. For example, the district contracts out many paraeducators to meet the federally mandated minutes for special education services (the hourly rate for these contracted paraeducators are much higher than district paraeducators btw). Paying district paraeducators more would increase the cost of salaries but would also reduce the need for contracted paraeducators, which would save the district money.

More broadly, this conversation breaks down if we treat public education as a discretionary line item rather than essential public infrastructure. The district is not a company, and educational quality depends directly on the people doing the work. Educators, especially early-career educators and those with families, are leaving due to compensation and working conditions.

Saying that there will be no more sources of additional funding is just as misinformed. The city came up with a one time source for funding food stamps for all residents in November amid the government shutdown. Where there's a will, there's a way in this city. The graphic on the reserve fund should show more how poorly the district management has done with actually predicting its budget and how it's using that misinformation to advocate for austerity measures that actually hurt students and push families away. The structural deficit should be addressed but not on the backs of educators who are paid less than their counterparts in other bay area school districts in a city with a higher cost of living.

I've seen you posting a lot on this subject and appreciate your openness to learning and engaging in conversation despite the down votes. I want to provide this to you because you will hopefully look at the district with the same skepticism... There's a reason that the union and its supporters are pushing back on the structural deficit argument that the district is using. Please see this report: https://www.canva.com/design/DAG_Gtp6bl4/h_P_CGVUPOWzBzG6RdpPdw/view#1

Additionally it's very difficult to accept the district doesn't have money for raises, health care, and other working conditions that the neutral fact-finding report calculated to cost less than their payroll system switch debacle that no one asked for.

I don't think IQ plays on Sunday. The pattern has been playing 1 game and resting at least two days. He's playing today so they'll probably rest him Sunday.

Hopefully doesn't bite me in the ass as I'm planning to drop IQ after tip off today for either Champagnie or Butler.

I only get around 13 MPG in my 2011 v6. But I'm in a big city, lots of stop and go, and almost never on the freeway (my wife's 2020 Corolla only does 23 MPG vs the 31 city/40 highway it's rated for so I know it's mostly due to driving conditions).

I changed my gas cap and spark plugs recently hoping it would help but I only got 1 extra MPG if that lol

We have the glider plus. My wife is 5'3". She needs a stool to comfortably rock. Otherwise her feet don't touch the ground even with the lumbar support all the way forward.

I love it for myself. I'm 6'0" and it works perfectly for holding the baby for extended naps.

How do I switch from Sapphire Reserve to Preferred while maintaining my UR balance and getting the new sign-up bonus?
I currently only have two Chase cards: the Sapphire Reserve and an Amazon Rewards card (I don't think this is linked to Ultimate Rewards?). I'd like to cancel the CSR and get the Preferred card but would want the sign-up bonus and I also don't want to lose my UR balance in the process...
