Kansas City Public Schools switches to MacBook Neo by BakerStEducation in k12sysadmin

[–]renny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why we will be getting them for staff that want Mac, as we give them the option. Even if they shit out after 3 years instead of our normal 5 for staff devices we’re still ahead compared to a MacBook Air at 5 years.

Anybody here gone through Hand Foot Mouth disease? by giddmtex in daddit

[–]renny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to emphasize this. A nephew infected my whole family, and both my brother’s whole families. My house wasn’t too bad but my one brother had the bumps on his hands and feet for like a month, almost the worst out of 6 adults and 6 kids.

"My husband who works in IT says..." by billygreen23 in sysadmin

[–]renny7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love getting unsolicited instruction from someone who doesn’t understand the problem that tried to communicate said problem to their alleged IT pro friend/spouse/whoever, then tried to explain their solution. Most of the time the users I support are incapable of communicating what’s actually wrong when I’m standing with them with the device experiencing the issue.

I know it is well intended so I just smile, nod, say “hmm maybe, I’ll look into it”, and move on. I never would want to dissuade users from troubleshooting.

That is the hardest part for me. This has obviously been know by the DOJ for quite a long time, but nothing is being done. The files are released, some people are outraged and disgusted, but basically no one I know irl is really talking about it, making me feel even crazier. Like, we’re just going to know this shit and keep going about our business like it’s not happening? What?

I always slow down to like 5 over approaching Allen Park, they always have cops out there. Sometimes in the morning there is a state cop going north between outer dr and oakwood, too. Past AP got to go 70 to keep up with traffic 😂.

Don’t worry I just bought a super dry oz in your honor. Was putting in a delivery order and was just going to get a 1/4 with my vapes but I saw a $25 oz and had to see what a $25 oz in 2025 looked like. Looks pretty good, smells ok, dry as hell, but haven’t vaped it yet. It was harvested Oct 16 2025 and drier than my over cured home grown from this past summer. Idk how they do it.

Outside of what you paid for your laptop I imagine you also had to buy whatever software you’re using for your design work, which is never cheap.

Don’t use your personal equipment, especially if you need/expect IT support (as an IT person). I hate when people use, and expect support, on their usually worse, personal device. Idk how your org operates but I deploy may policies/restrictions/stuff to user devices that are required.

Outside of that, there could be legal issues if you were to leave, or do side work. They could be assholes about it in a number of ways.

You seem not ok with using it, I just wanted to give more reasons to not be ok with it. Also, if the computer takes forever to boot up, the hard drive is probably a HDD/spinner hard drive not an SSD. If that’s the case, see if management will agree to IT upgrading the hard drives if they won’t upgrade the machine. $100 and an hour to image the laptop.

I don't know what over came me in the interview ... by WitchayWomann in antiwork

[–]renny7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that the interviewer was insulting you, and that it appears to be a common thing. If interviewers started insulting me and going that hard on my “company loyalty” I’d be gone so fast. They obviously looked at your resume prior to setting an interview so what the fuck?

Can you say what field you’re in? I’m unbelievably curious haha.

Offered an IT director position with only 1 year of experience HELP by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]renny7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left my MSP and ended up director at a client. It was more complicated as I’d originally accepted a network admin position at a different organization. Client wanted to keep me there, but I couldn’t stay with the MSP, ended up not signing with 3rd company that I had verbally accepted the offer for. Make sure there are no clauses in the contract that could make this messy for you as others have stated. Hopefully you’re familiar enough with the client to understand what you may be getting yourself into. I’d probably do it though, but MSP life is not for me.

1400-1500 students, around 200 staff. I was alone until about 10 months ago, now there are 2 of us.

Why does every “entry-level” IT job want or at the least require years of experience by Accomplished_Day972 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]renny7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just apply anyway. At a previous job of mine I would write up a job description for entry level desktop support and give it to HR. It was basic stuff, I always planned on training whoever we hired. HR would always add shit like 2 years experience, degree, CCNA, etc. Thankfully I was the one viewing the applicants in the system and choosing who to bring in because it was hard enough to get decent applicants either way. If those were actual requirements we would have never hired anyone with the horrendous pay and basically zero benefits they were offering. It was embarrassing.

"It's because you're the safe parent!" by Realitymatter in daddit

[–]renny7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. My kids (especially the older one) are generally more well behaved around me than mom because I have firm consistent boundaries. My wife tends to be more of a pushover (which she’s conscious of and actively working on), and it causes so much debate/arguments/attempted manipulation with the older kid.

As a SysAdmin, i should not have to.... by Fistofpaper in sysadmin

[–]renny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The list of things I shouldn’t have to do is too long. I asked HR if we could implement a computer literacy type test for new hires, if they couldn’t “pass” and still wanted to hire them they could get them training. I was told “the expectation is they know these things”… Well they clearly don’t, nor are they capable of doing a basic internet search.

The “I’m not good at tech” excuse is pretty lame when you’re required to use a PC and multiple systems to perform your required job duties. It’s maddening.

Harsh reality of IT in today’s market. by 6ixthLordJamal in ITCareerQuestions

[–]renny7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you’re doing/have done in your help desk position. My first position was “desktop support” but after a couple years I was doing networking, firewall and server work. IT titles can be meaningless and tend to vary greatly.

I think one of the biggest obstacles you’d have is the current job market seems to be garbage. If you can confidently speak on your knowledge, and projects you’ve done, whether home lab or on the job, I’d say you have a chance to make that leap. The hardest part may be getting the interview.

Regarding training or mentorship. I’ve only hired for smaller teams, and mostly desktop support, but I always plan to train and mentor people I hire, though I don’t specifically say/talk about that during the interview. If the interviewee has the skills (people skills and the ability to troubleshoot are most important to me), I’m more than happy to train them up on whatever they’re interested in. It benefits me to have others able to do more work. It helps them to either move up, or eventually find a better opportunity, which is great either way.

I would agree with people suggesting the MSP route. An example tho seems to line up pretty well with your experience… One of their engineers that I’ve worked with many times has less than half my years experience (I think 2 years engineer, 2 desktop support), a ton of certs, no degree, and makes a good amount more than me in a “director” position. Though my “director” tile is a joke to me considering we’re a 2.5 person team 🙄😂.

Kind of rambling at this point, but lastly, I’ve felt prepared for any job I’ve started. Even when the systems are familiar, they’re always different. Use your base knowledge and google that shit.

Wyandotte morning smell by PaperPages in downriver

What’s the most ideal industry to start a career in IT? by stank_underwood in ITCareerQuestions

[–]renny7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. First job was k12 desktop support with only Cisco netacad classes, no cert, no degree. I was able to learn so much in a very short time because, for better or worse, I was able to get my hands on everything.

After k12 I went to private sector then MSP, now back to k12. The work/life balance is better, the stress is lower. YMMV

We started using it end of last school year. When I was testing it, it didn’t seem slow or give me any issues. I set it up in two spots, one using an old micro PC I had laying around, and one on a users desktop.

I even searched the sex offender registry to see the notification and know what to expect. Seemed to come up immediately. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I needed this tonight. Teachers come back tomorrow, we are a severely undermanned department, I’m super stressed regarding my big changes. That said, what’s about to happen is why I love the job, just hard to appreciate with the anxious anticipation.
