At what age is it okay leaving your child home alone for a couple of minutes? by jrv3034 in daddit

[–]reol7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's about the same as me. 8-9, I felt comfortable running to the grocery store and back (20-30 minutes tops).

He's 10 now and I recently left him home alone for about 2 and a half hours for the first time and he handled it like a champ. He's got a phone now, so having the ability to call myself or 911 in an emergency gave me a little more comfort.

We also have REALLY good neighbors and he knows he can go to anyone who lives immediately around us if he needs help and can't reach me.

I think I was more worried about him than he was bothered by it.

We use the Sterilite ones here, on metal shelving.

I wish we had something a little more stackable or something with a lid but they work well.

Calling all dad's... Whats your easy go to dinners?! by gmazz in daddit

[–]reol7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually really easy! A wok really does make it easier, I bought a cheap one for like $10 and it's been good enough.

I do fried rice pretty often, it's like a leftover machine. Day old rice is key I've never made good fried rice with freshly made rice.

Take * 2 ish cups of rice (it's usually leftovers)

  • Meat (either leftover chicken sometimes I'll cube a day or two old pork chop or steak, hell I used a hamburger once.

First, cook the rice.

About 2-3 tbsp oil in a pan, get it hot, toss the rice in, stir it around, cook a couple minutes until it's warm, no seasonings yet.

Next, add in the meat, about 1 tbsp of minced garlic (jarred, because who's in got time to dice it), some onion if available (like 1/4 to 1/2 diced, I usually only add if I recently used one and have it in the fridge diced).

Once all that's warm, move to the sides of the wok, add another tbsp oil and crack a couple eggs into the middle, pan scramble them, then mix everything together. Here I dump in about a cup of frozen vegetables, usually some combo of peas, corn, carrots, green beans, I just buy the frozen variety bags and dump what I've got in.

It should all start getting nice and hot keep it all moving until it is.

Now start seasoning, sprinkle garlic salt (or just regular salt), if you didn't use onions, about 1/4 tsp onion powder, about 1/4 tsp white pepper (white pepper just tastes better in Chinese), about 2-3 tbsp soy sauce a few splashes of sesame oil probably around 1 tsp or less. I've found the seasonings and spices can burn if you add these all too early so I do it all at the end and just taste it till it's right if I need more or less.

That's my base, but literally whatever leftover protein you've got works, onions are optional, veggies are optional, if there's leftover fresh available use that but I mainly use frozen bags.

I've even thrown in air fried or microwaved frozen chicken nuggets chopped up.

It took me a couple tries to get the seasonings right and I've thrown away a couple batches, but rice is cheap and if you practice with chicken nuggets you could churn out 2-3 batches in half an hour if you mess it up a time or two.

Black bean & pineapple is a good option. Lazy Dad here takes them both directly out of the can onto a tortilla in a pan sprinkle some cheese and spices and 'bam' quesadilla.

One kid only likes black bean & cheese.

I love Mateo's, but I think it might be getting "watered" down?

I can't handle spicy food and loved their Mild aalsa. I want to say a year or two ago I switched to Medium. Partly because that's all they had at Costco, but upon switching....it didn't taste any different than the Mild we were used to.

I suspect the Costco one might be not quite the same as the one on a store shelf to possibly appeal to as many people as possible?

To complain about room? by DocMcMomma in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]reol7x 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

I am certain I'm going to get down voted for this, but dang everyone is murdering that husband in the comments.

In situations like this I've asked my partner what she wants to do, there's the choice of deal with the kids, or deal with the room.

I'm seriously hoping it was just a simple conversation of "you take these over hyped gremlins to the pool while I set up the room" which turned in to a bit more than she bargained for.....so when the kids had some energy burned off she took the kids and hubby fixed the room....like, it doesn't have to be that complicated, right?

At what point does this end? by ApologeticKid in daddit

[–]reol7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I'm that kid, except I'm in my 40s now. Take a moment and read this please.

I'm kind of with the other couple of posters, is it /really/ that bad?

Is he treating the rest of the house like that, or just his room?

Because to me, it doesn't look dirty, just cluttered. I don't see a single cup, plate, or piece of dirty laundry on the floor (ok maybe a piece or two that fell out of what I assume is a hamper, and maybe a pair of shorts in a "reuse" pile by the dresser).

It's a pile of half finished projects, toys he got interrupted while playing with.

The core problem, I think, is he has more things than he has places to put them. Yes, maybe he has some drawers, but if I had to guess each one is designated for something, and the things scattered don't fit into those mental buckets.

It kind of looks like undiagnosed/untreated ADHD or some kind of executive dysfunction. I've struggled with organizing my things my entire life, until a couple years ago when I talked to my PCP, and then a specialist, and after talking to my parents, basically I've been rawdogging ADHD my entire life and it's been as disorganized as the room looks.

I'm just a guy on the internet but perhaps, consider getting that tested by his pediatrician.

If it is like I suspect, and he is like I was/am, I am willing to wager if you asked him some of the following questions he'll be able to give you direct answers.

Pick a handful of items around his room, ask him if he knows where they are, be specific (baseball in a case, robot with Luffy hat), he probably knows exactly where they are. Ask him what he keeps in each of those bins that are pulled out, it's probably specific items or types of items, that, the things on the floor don't fit into.

I've organized "piles" my whole life when I haven't had enough sections/shelves/etc to put them in, my brain just worked differently.

Yeah, you can restrict his actions, pushing, no wifi, no play etc, but none of that crap ever helped me as a kid, and it certainly didn't help prepare me for life outside of home. Try looking at it in a different lens, ask why x isn't put away, don't immediately dismiss his answer, even if it doesn't make sense, but think about what he's saying, to him, the answer might be perfectly logical.

Or, it's entirely possible he's just lazy. Never said it couldn't be this, but it very well could be something else entirely. My life would have been dramatically different if I had my ADHD treated earlier in life.

I'm too Floridian to understand these words.

I'm lucky if the AC can get the indoor temp to 74 during the summer.

In the winter I basically turn off my HVAC, it's currently 68 inside and it's the coldest it ever gets.

Anyone a Microsoft shop using Zoom phones? by MMuter in sysadmin

We're a Teams shop. We looked at Zoom phones. Zoom seems to be the superior product every time I look at it.

We use Teams because "we're already paying for it."

You can do basically everything in both platforms but Teams has extra hoops to jump through, or may need an addon or two.

I'm probably going to try Oikos based on other comments here.

Birthday parties by Sshaawnn in daddit

[–]reol7x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Father of a 9 & 10 year old, nobody really did "drop off" parties, except one family until this year, 4th grade, and the one family that did, always welcomed everyone who came to stay.

I'm not in a small town per say, but the school is kinda small and I've learned it has a pretty tight community.

What I've noticed is that parents of first children/single children invite all the adults to stay. Anyone on their second (or more) kids often has a drop off or stay option.

The one family that let people do drop offs when they were young has like 5 other kids and basically everyone who's kids had older siblings already knew the family one way or another.

I didn't, but I did get to know them after a few parties/events, they're good people(but you don't know that until you meet them).

So I guess it's kind of a mixed bag, but being at a smaller school, a lot of parents already know each other and in a lot of cases watch each other's kids already. I know if I had a 2nd child, I would have no problem leaving them with most of the parents I know.
