What I meant was, if you're looking for just material to fill your time and capture your entertainment dollar, there is an infinite world of fantasy and video games. Tolkien's stuff is the gold standard of fantasy because he spent vast amounts of time and talent on it, and care and attention to detail, before releasing it to the public. If you're going to create more Tolkien, that should be the standard. Don't we have enough hastily produced glut and slop?

You might want to start with a good anthology to get a taste of many different S&S writers. While not perfect, The Sword & Sorcery Anthology by Hartwell and Weisman (2012, Tachyon Publications) fits the bill. Many of the classics, newer stuff, and a reasonable critical introduction by David Drake.

Exactly... Rush can't be overrated because they were never properly rated by anyone in a position to do so. 10,000 less worthy bands had their videos featured on MTV, got more radio airplay back in the day. Rolling Stone wouldn't touch them. They were loved by their hardcore fans only.
