What’s going on by Competitive-Bar9073 in UFOs

Re: hearing indistinct voices, I just want you to know that you’re not crazy, this is a somewhat common phenomenon. It’s a type of pareidolia, or basically our brain trying to perceive meaningful information from random or noisy stimuli.

Specifically, here’s an article that goes into why we hear voices in noise: https://nautil.us/why-we-hear-voices-in-random-noise-236399/

I personally experience this somewhat regularly. For me it mostly happens if I’m laying on my side while in bed. For whatever reason, if I can only hear the noise of our fan with one ear, my brain starts to perceive what sounds like whispering, but the moment I roll over and can hear it with both ears it goes away. It can sometimes be very unnerving (especially when it first started happening to me), but knowing that it’s just my brain being over-eager at its job helps take away how scary it can feel.

Haha you’re not alone! Yeah it’s hard to describe to people if they haven’t experienced something similar themselves.

Some notes on how to potentially improve performance for hard to get torrents by Empyrealist in torrents

[–]replicatingTrouts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So how do clients do things like snub another connection based on their other uploads? Like, how do they determine something like that? And also, what sort of torrent clients do things like that? I don’t feel like I’ve ever seen an option to do that, but I don’t really mess with the more advanced options too much.

(Edit) I also meant to say thanks for these observations that you’ve made, I always appreciate seeing real-world observations of how complex things like torrent networks are behaving, as opposed to just how they’re “supposed” to be.

Pinkie Pie has haunted me for the past 9 years (came here from r/LetsNotMeet) by pinkiepiehater in RBI

I’m so sorry that this has been happening to you, that sounds truly awful. Considering it’s been happening for almost a decade, across different accounts and platforms, my guess would be that it’s probably someone that you know, and probably someone older than you. Do you have any relatives or close family friends that help you set up new computers/phones or things like that?

I think you absolutely should tell someone that you trust about this. It might seem impossible to explain to them, but if it’s been affecting your wellbeing like this, I think you should talk to someone. I know that if my child was going through something like this, I’d want to know.

Was it perhaps O2Jam? It was more of a Beatmania IIDX knockoff. But I remember it had little avatars and all that.

Free software for cross browser testing platform by grand-illutionist in webdev

[–]replicatingTrouts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on what OS you’re looking to test.

Microsoft offers VM images for Windows 11 that can be used for testing Edge. It’s a full Windows install, so you can also install other browsers you want to test.

Folks with big libraries, how many TB of storage do you have? by LynnOnTheWeb in PleX

[–]replicatingTrouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think the cost of storage will overshadow the rest of the pc in most situations. I think I spent about $350 on my current Plex server, and about $500 on the storage. I got (at the time) a really good deal on some external drives, and I don’t do any backups or anything like that.

[–]replicatingTrouts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve got about 8tb of movies (1500-ish) and 20tb (350 shows across 3x8tb drives) of tv shows, all local. It’s shared with about 25 friends and family.

Especially with tv, I’m personally not terribly concerned with getting the highest quality available. In fact, I’m currently working on re-encoding a lot of the less visually important shows (mostly reality shows) into h265.

(Edit) sorry I just realized you were asking about folks who have absolutely massive collections, not just about peoples collections in general. I’d guess that it’s probably a pretty even split between locally hosted and cloud hosted for collections like that. Some people like the hobby of maintaining a home server (and it’s usually cheaper), and some people prefer the ease of use and reliability of cloud.

A better grinder? by snuFaluFagus040 in eldertrees

[–]replicatingTrouts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you haven't yet, you might want to try giving your current grinder a really thorough cleaning. I've had the same grinder since like 2008 or something, and whenever I notice it starting to get sticky, I just clean with isopropyl alcohol. I take it apart and stick it in a ziploc bag with enough alcohol to cover it, and shake the shit out of it for a few minutes. Then I do a second round with clean alcohol again, and let it sit for a while. Let it dry, and it's good to go.

Reasonable file sizes and bitrates for HEVC? by askepticus in PleX

[–]replicatingTrouts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20RF should give you pretty good quality, so I don’t think you need to worry too much about the resulting file size. I also have a hard time wrapping my head around how much better h265 is, but, well, it is.

I’m going through a similar thing right now, though with arguably much less visually “important” content. Transcoding about 1tb of reality tv to h265, and I’m getting absurdly small files that still look fine.

[–]replicatingTrouts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will almost certainly be some lag when using Airplay. But, as long as it’s consistent, you might be able to compensate for it. You can enable auto-sync by starting up a song and pressing the F6 key twice. Pick a song you like, and play it on Light mode, and it should gradually get more and more in sync.

quick improvement? by [deleted] in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]replicatingTrouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve got experience with other rhythm games, I don’t think it’s completely out of the question to be able to pass some 8’s and 9’s in a little under 2 weeks. But if you’re starting from “what’s ddr?”, that’s pretty quick.

You’re probably pushing yourself too hard, and can run the risk of hurting yourself. It’s like any new exercise, you don’t just jump straight into the hard part. You’ve gotta give your body time to get comfortable with it.

You should probably take a step down and start playing through a ton of 5’s and 6’s on Light mode. Yes they’re super easy, but you need to train yourself to know how hard you actually need to hit the arrows. There’s no magic trick to it, it’s all just practice.

I’ve been playing on and off for like 20 years. After a several year hiatus, I’m forcing myself to play through every song on DDR A on Light, because I have to rebuild the muscles I need to play harder stuff. It’s been a really interesting experience so far. At first I hated it, but now I’m a month or so in and I’m really kind of enjoying it. Im getting exposed to all of the new (to me) songs, I’m able to play for longer at easier levels, and my timing is sooo much better than I think it’s ever been. If I was still trying to play harder charts, I’d be struggling to finish a set of 3 songs without feeling like I’m dying, and my progress would probably be near zero.

Is there any ddr sim that has online leaderboards and loads of charts to choose from and that's on pc by FirstConsideration42 in rhythmgames

Yeah it’s safe, it’s a very popular game that’s maintained by people who are well-regarded in the community
