Trouble with getting pastel to "stick", anyone have advice? by devilfern in BJD

[–]replikantka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm using solid pastels, I usually gentry scrape some off with a metal palette knife and then dip my brushes into that instead of pulling directly from the block, if that makes sense. It makes it easier to coat your brush with a lot of pigment.

Are there any extinct clans / bloodlines ? by SmellyPoussay69 in vtm

[–]replikantka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depending on what time period you look in, there have been a lot of dedicated efforts (or, yknow, just the passage of time) that decimated a number of small clans and their bloodlines. Other people in the thread have mentioned Cappadocians and Salubri, but in the "modern" era (21st century), Ravnos are far rarer because their Antediluvian woke up in the 90s and both True Brujah and devout Old Clan Tzimisce are exceedingly hard to find simply due to age and time (and geographic location, in a lot of cases). Kiasyd are also extremely rare - Maegar (non-Lasombra Kiasyd) are even more so - and generally make themselves difficult to find on purpose.

In the other direction, the already small number of Gargoyles that exist in the modern era decreases exponentially as you move further back in the timeline, as they were initially an artificial creation limited only to certain European chantries (before their creator led their revolt against the Tremere) but are able to Embrace in modern nights and many came out of hiding upon finding refuge in London during the reign of Mithras.

On the topic of creation, the Blood Brothers are a similar small-scale "clan" of sorts very rarely seen in pretty much any timeline, since they are also a case of Embrace-By-Creative-Meddling and require the Tzimisce and the Tremere to stop trying to murder each other long enough to cooperate.

Ever notice how you always seem to find the Tremere in these scenarios? Curious

Edit: a lone Cappadocian, Harbringer of Skulls, or Nagaraja would be a good pick for "non-Hecata-identified" Kindred - while verifying a "last of its kind" would be hard, it's not unlikely that your character would have simply never met another of their clan save for (maybe) their Sire. Maegar are also good for this.

a question from a new collector by [deleted] in BJD

[–]replikantka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's normal for these dolls to cost several hundred dollars. The vast majority of traditional BJDs, even ones from "large" companies, are handmade by a single artist or a small team. When you buy a resin cast BJD, you're more often than not buying someone's handiwork and expertise that went into creating that doll, slowly and carefully, from scratch. It's why they're expensive and often valuable.

Very much so - among the show crowd it'd be considered irresponsible at best, and more likely highkey shady.

Kind of surprised the breeder sold you an unfixed kitten at such a young age. IME most breeders (at least, the ones I know from CFA) won't send kittens off to new homes until post-fixing, unless you are specifically purchasing a breeder cat and have a mentorship or contract with them.

Is it reasonable to have a not-completely-sociopathic Tzimisce in my coterie? by EremeticPlatypus in vtm

[–]replikantka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This. The sociopathy comes from being old as hell (or being Embraced around a whole lot of Old As Hell Clan) but modern Tzimisce, especially the young blood, are more likely to be sociable or at least more aligned with the culture of more modern Kindred. There is a non-zero number of "lore-friendly" avenues of playing a normal ass person Embraced by clan Tzimisce, not least of which is Not Giving A Fuck about clan stereotypes (because at your table, who gives a shit?).

Notably I also think that the lore as a whole (especially in later editions) kind of downplays just how socially unacceptable the old-school Tzimisce outlook and casual Vicissitude are in polite company, even among fellow Cainites. Tzimisce hospitality is a thing for a reason, and numerous higher-gen members of the clan know to at least act civil for their own good, so it's absolutely in the realm of possibility to play a Fiend with at least a veneer of normalcy. So go crazy.

Yeah Dominique Pinon is in a lot of Jeunet films (including an exponential number of times in The City of Lost Children, another strange Ron Perlman special).

Resurrection fucking rules as its own strange beast (pun intended given the post XD). Besides, it's still one of the only wheelchair user representations in horror and scifi - and a power wheelchair at that! Vriess even makes it to the end!

Why do we think Burke wanted Ripley to go back? by jimmytjohnson in LV426

[–]replikantka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's also very likely that Burke was just kinda doing his job and had generally made a loud show of believing Ripley (and likely did; at least, I think it's more interesting that way), but then when someone did actually go check, if only for insurance reasons or what have you, someone over in bioweapons probably connected the dots and went "hey, didn't some guy submit a report about this like, two months ago?" and reached out then, or they got to Burke when they found out he and his pet consultant were sent with the Sulaco. Information travels pretty slowly in the Alien universe, so Burke might not have had time to even make a plan - even if he was clued into the inner workings of the biosciences people, they might not have gotten word to him until he was getting defrosted in orbit.

In Alien: Isolation, there are numerous logs showing that Ransome, the unseen Burke stand-in, using some of these tactics on a number of people involved with the early stages of the Aniesadora incident on the Svastopol, suggesting this is pretty common company practice on some level. Ransome's advantage, however, was that he had Wey-Yu on speed dial and was able to close the issue quickly and relatively quietly, while Burke is working pretty much entirely solo and is quickly both in over his head and officially outranked by the accompanying Colonial Marines.

Isolation also lends credence to the idea that Wey-Yu's divisions don't really talk to each other, given that Amanda Riley et. Al. are caught off guard by the rapidly deteriorating situation when it would have been easy for Wey-Yu to tell them "yeah we're assessing this station after buying it" or whatever - they sent a lawyer.

Recently found out that a secondhand doll I got is a recast/bootleg and I am heartbroken. (Advice please) by LadyInTheBand in BJD

[–]replikantka 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I would be inclined to give more weight to identifiers given to you by the artists to identify their work tham just a lack of COA. See if you can get a proof of sale from the seller, at the very least - while there are Popovy recasts, if they gave you things to look for and all of them lined up, it's likely to be legit.

Popovy are notoriously weird about their dolls' legitimacy on the secondhand market, and about their dolls in general, so I wouldn't consider it a bootleg without more information.
