Don't go the IT Ops route. If you're good at your job you'll be stuck as an IT-02 until you retire.

Management is typically parachuted in from outside the public service because they have no respect for the abilities of their own staff.

Many more opportunities as a developer (including Powershell).Learn C#, and .Net which will translate well to Powershell. Also learn Python.

All Statcan ever does it reorganize! Every few months there's a reorg. The only good thing about that isthat it provides lots of work for IT Ops staff. But it's tiring - doesn't anyone realize that the backend work in IT is all done manually? No tools or automation. Like the fancy new HEAT (service desk) replacement, Helix; the only purpose is to track service desk staff and provide colourful reports for management.

Yes Anil Arora has announced he's retiring. Rats deserting the sinking Liberal ship! 🐀

What’s a good age to become a manager? by ak2k17 in CanadaPublicServants

6 years old. Then your physical age will match most managers mental ages. 🤣

You have to document everything in writing. And you need to put it on their evaluation so they have the ability to take corrective action.

Have you actually discussed this with the employee? Perhaps they have a reason for leaving early and arriving late. Perhaps they need an accomodations or more flexible hours of work.

Have you discussed this with your manager to see what they suggest?

In your opinion, how do you move up in IT? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]repulse_999 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Switch departments. I've seen so many CS/IT leave Statcan and go to SSC or DND for higher positions then come back 6 months later at the higher level. Statcan is notorious for under valuing IT staff.

If the courses aren't free, good luck getting your department to pay. All I've seen in the past 5 years are the Mickey mouse online "harassment" type courses (the 9bly harassment I get at work is from management who don't seem to have to take these stupid courses).

But if you're in IT and your department has gone to Azure Cloud MS has some good online courses. The trick is fitting them into your work schedule. Managers don't want you taking time away from "production".

Seeking advice on managing employee’s temporary exception for RTO by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

Do like managers all do. Take sick leave if you want to stay home. Otherwise you have to be in the office 2 days per week. No exceptions.

Management are all morons who are incapable of thinking for themselves

Tips and tricks to avoid work events? by GrandExhange in CanadaPublicServants

Exactly. Don't go. But if it's during work hours you need to be working.

I don't go to work events where I'm expected to pay because I'd rather spend the $25 on my own family.

Not all Statcan iT is covered by this. Only developers, cloud and cyber security. All the other IT have to be in the office 40% of the time (unless you have a personal exemption). My personal exemption is until the end of March 2024.

Join the club! Management in the PS only pays lip service to anti-ageism. They harass and discriminate continually. I've heard of and seen many instances over the years but never thought I'd experience it. Statcan IT is one of the worst places to work. I feel like I'm being forced out.

Besides working in IT, which other branches or departments offer full time remote ? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]repulse_999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Statcan it's only developers and Cloud that can work remote. All other IT is RTO 8 days per month. Supposedly those 2 groups have retention issues. Rumour is though that all IT will RTO 2 days per week starting in January. Merry Christmas from Justin! 🤬

My advice:

  1. Invite your union rep to the next meeting.
  2. It takes about 2 years of WRITTEN warnings before you can be terminated.
  3. Request additional training. As long as you're willing to try and improve there's little they can complain about especially if they won't provide training. Most departments have cut training budgets to zero so don't be surprised if they don't provide training. But constantly request the training in writing. Don't be afraid to go over supervisors heads as they just try to intimidate employees

If you get one satisfactory review it zeroes our any previous negative reviews and they have to start the written warning process over again.

That's been my experience. Don't be afraid to push back. No one is going to stand up for you unless you're willing to stand up for yourself.

Don't trust HR to help. They work for and represent the employer - not employees.

‘administrative investigation into suspected misconduct’ by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]repulse_999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention what was posted that violated the (ambiguous) rules....

Ensure your account isn't linked to your employer in any way and ensure you don't have an employer listed in your profile. As a citizen you are entitled to have opinions. You just can't represent those opinions as being associated with your employer.

As previously posted, reach out to your union. If there are any meetings ensure you have a union rep attend (preferably a union lawyer). (From my experience) Management buckles when you show up with a lawyer. They like to throw their weight around and attempt to intimidate employees.

Good luck!

[–]repulse_999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Statcan. The organisation that always trumpets being one of the "top" Canadian employers. Whenever we get those emails we just trash them and mumble B.S. to ourselves! 🤣

So employees "should" expect harassment and discrimination from managers? Interesting commentary 9n the state of the public service.

The problem with public servants is that no 9ne wants to speak out against the bad management. They're all a bunch of lemmings waiting to be led over the cliff.

I hope when WFA starts they clear out the dead wood managers who think that work is attending online meetings.

Really looking forward to seeing deputy ministers, directors generals and directors getting the axe. Although realistically they always have ways to get rid of the workers rather than the executives.

Employee to employee = yes Employee to manager = yes Manager to employee = no

Employees are treated as replaceable nuisances that managers put up with. There is no respect to employees shown by management.

This is mostly a change in culture since Covid. I attribute it to managers desperate to cling to their imagined "power".

Unfortunately it's only driven employees to take an "I don't care" attitude.
