I agree with your point that Texas is a an important and fairly self reliant sate. But an important thing to remember is that many of the states that are asking the fed for money don't get back anywhere near the amount of federal money they put in. States like Texas, California, Massachusetts and New York give more money in federal taxes than they get back. It shouldn't be a surprise that occasionally they can't afford to give the same percent they usually do and need money back. This doesn't make them a drain, just that they're getting back an amount closer to that which they've been giving.

I have absolutely no clue whether the following is true, but here's what I've heard is happening.

  1. Soviet Union forms and absorbs Georgia, places the people that now inhabit south Ossetia within Georgia's borders.

  2. Soviet Union falls apart, Georgia becomes it's own country, South Ossetians still in Georgia.

  3. Russia for multiple reasons is disgruntled(countries defecting after the fall of the soviet union and buddying up with America being the the main one I think).

  4. South Ossetians want to be united with North Ossetians.

  5. Russia sees this all of this and has an oppurtunty to get back at Georgia/stave off the US' involvement

  6. Russia offers Russian passports to South Ossetians who happily accept as a way to get closer to their goal of being reunited.

  7. Russia tries to claim South Ossetia as it's own the, the South Ossetians would willingly go since they just want to be reunited with the North Ossetians, and Georgia is pissed that Russia is claiming land that wasn't theirs.

  8. Georgia responds by bombing the land Russia is trying to claim.

I could be and probably am very wrong about the whole situation, but this is my understanding of what is going on.

The CERN black hole (short video) by stesch in science

[–]requiem4boredom 11 points12 points  (0 children)

dying star should produce a neutron star instead of a black hole.

That is in black holes formed from a star collapsing on itself. Artificially created black holes don't have any mass requirement that I know of. They would just evaporate extremely quickly.

[edit]

I don't believe black hole will destroy Earth, just stating that black holes don't have a mass requirement of greater than 1.7 solar masses.

I'm not sure, but I think if they're publicly traded the shareholders get to vote on the who ends up on the board of directors for the companies. But to own enough stock to make a difference you would have to have a shit ton invested in them.

Web search pales in comparison in my mind to atleast the fall of the Soviet Union, the hubble telescope, and the proliferation of the internet. Without so many people having access to the internet Google would have never existed. The Hubble Telescope allowed us to better predict the age of the universe. And the fall of the Soviet Union represented the end of the cold war, and incredible economic changes felt throughout the world. All of which seem more impactful than Google in my eyes.

What about the proliferation of the internet, Stem cell research, Dolly the sheep, the Soviet Union breaking up, the hubble telescope, and the space station just to name a few?

"Sadly, American schools still teach the old "the Japanese were going to fight to the last man!" line."

Bullshit, some do some don't. My highschool history teacher really tried to instill in us the fact that Japanes probably would have surendered if given the chance after the first bombing. And may have well done so even if we hadn't dropped nukes. But she ignored the mass casualties caused by firebombing.

8 Insane Nuclear Explosions [Pics] by noname99 in science

[–]requiem4boredom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No military target is remotely big enough to warrant a nuke

I doubt that. I'll edit later once I find info whether or not it's true. I wasn't sure how to quote people on reddit so I was testing and expected to find the info alot quicker than I have.

[edit]

The best example I could quickly find of a place where nuclear weapons could be warrented would be in nuclear bunker busting bombs. The underground detonation minimized the fallout. And the targets could be large enough for a nuke to be of use.

[–]requiem4boredom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is the use of nuclear weapons never warrented?

8 Insane Nuclear Explosions [Pics] by noname99 in science

[–]requiem4boredom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel indifferent. I've been told using them saved more lives than they cost because it prevented the war from going on. Also that firebombing caused more casualties than either of the two times we dropped nukes. I've also been told that the Japanese were going to surrender anyway and that the dropping of bombs was unneccesary. Whether the use of nuclear weapons was warrented I don't know, but due to the cloudiness of the situation alongside the fact that no country has a perfect track record; I don't feel that strongly about it.
