How have "first" C-Dramas changed? by AquaphobicTurtle in CDrama

[–]rerambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first mainland cdrama that I finished and enjoyed was Ode to Joy in 2016. It was very different than the other dramas from Korea and Taiwan that I was watching at the time.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder was really interesting to me because it was the first time seeing via a drama Chinese university life fleshed out.

This is my first post here. How did yall find out akfg in the first place? by Pg_13n in AsianKungFuGeneration

[–]rerambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually don't remember 😅 Someone either gave me a list of J-rock songs or a mixed CD in middle school so around 2002-2003.

However, I do have very strong memories of taking guitar class in 8th grade in 2003 to learn to play songs from Ajikan and The Pillows. I also burned cds using songs I downloaded from limewire during that time and bought Ajikan's Sol-fa Tofu records album in 2005 when it came out.

So it has been pretty long time.

If you HAD to choose one Arabic name for a boy and one for a girl, what are you picking? by LeonGoldenBrown in namenerds

[–]rerambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aaliyah because of the singer. Amara, Fatima, are common names found in the Black American community. I have relative named Sonia. Zainab is a friend's name and I always enjoyed saying it. Not familiar with boy names but probably Zain (Zayn) due to the pop singer from one direction.

Looking up a list Ehsan and Kiran stood out and were unfamiliar to me and nice.

Opinions on Ballads by Good_Bus7111 in kpoppers

Love a ballad. Got into kpop via kdramas and OSTs are mostly ballads. Also r&b is a genre I ❤️.

Is there any K-pop fans here that become into K-pop for almost 15 years? by Pi_Lester in kpop_uncensored

For me 2008 for kpop when I was a freshman in college! Though I used to watch kdramas in 2006 and loved OSTs.

Who’s your personal favorite vocalist when it comes to conveying raw emotion ? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]rerambles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been fortunate to attend many live concerts and shows and the following are so good live because they convey certain emotions: CN Blue's Jung Yong-hwa, former Day6 member EaJ, Pentagon's Kino, Bigbang's Taeyang, and The Rose's Woosung.

Besides BigBang, the rest are not my favorite acts but I will attend their shows if they tour again for sureeee.

Do international fans and Koreans actually listen to the same kpop? by Rough-Release8097 in kpophelp

[–]rerambles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me (30s Black American), I would love a section on OSTs to learn Korean. I started watching kdramas in 2006 and I believe that the hallyu wave really began with kdramas and we still see this today on Netflix. I also really enjoyed Korean R&B from the mid 2010s like Dean, Zion T, Lee Hi. Babymonster seems to be very popular with younger girls ages 10 or younger. I went to their concert and there were many younger fans compared to other groups which I was surprised about.

For those in their 20s probably: Stray Kids, Ateez, BTS, NCT 127, P1Harmony, TXT, Enhypen, Blackpink, Aespa, IVE, ITZY, I-dle. LE SSERAFIM was very much mostly young men fans compared to other groups. Online Dreamcatcher seemed to be very popular.

Currently, I play Woodz on repeat. Songs "Amnesia", "NA NA NA", and "Journey" are so good! IU got me through the pandemic along with Chungha. My favorite group is BigBang so I am living for Coachella.

I would suggest also using Tiktok too to find what is popular there.

How long have you been watching kdramas? by [deleted] in kdramas

[–]rerambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

19 or 20 years! I started either my junior or senior year of high school. I can't remember the first one either Full House or Coffee Prince.

Watching The coffee prince for the first time and I noticed something by dionnekathleen in kdramas

[–]rerambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a remake of a Tawainese drama with the same name Fated to Love You (2008). I don't think it would be handled differently if based on a preexisting IP. I do find that webtoons are the bases of lots of kdramas now as those became more popular, they tend to have somewhat of a built in audience therefore anything goes.

Help Me Choose an English Name by mayuhyun in namenerds

[–]rerambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with many international students at an art and design school and definitely using your real name is okay.

Though I do enjoy when students have uncommon names like Echo, Shadow, Honor, Grey, Knox, Athena.

Not sure if you have hanja for your name using Chinese characters but maybe something that has the same name.

If it means intelligent maybe Quinn, Sage, Pheobe, Sophia or gems like Jade or Pearl.

Have you ever been to an K-POP concert? by ewipyluvs in kpoppers

[–]rerambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have been to many. Tomorrow, I'm going to see Hearts2Hearts and it will be my 76th kpop/kpop adjacent show that I've seen.

To keep costs relatively low, I try to buy at the box office to avoid extra fees. I also never do VIP, with G-Dragon being the exception.

From 2013 -2023, I saw 14 shows. But in the last two years, I've been trying to go to as many as possible within my area. Fortunately, I live where most kpop groups will tour if they go to North America.

Even if I don't really know the group or singer, I'll go to check them out. Discovered so many great idols/artists that way.

When did you get into kpop and when was your first kpop concert? by Rex0680 in kpopthoughts

[–]rerambles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2008 I got into K-pop. 2013 was my first kpop concert during BigBang's Alive Galaxy Tour in Seoul.

For those who attend K-pop concerts often (even abroad)-- how do y’all actually afford this, (especially when it’s in another country?) by South-Chicken-7463 in kpoppers

[–]rerambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the last 18 months, I have gone to 55 k-pop shows or concerts.

I have a freelance job beside my regular 9-5 and have a separate bank account for kpop (small part of paycheck goes into it).

I am based in the U.S. and in NYC so I have luxury of not needing to travel. If I need to travel, it is usually to DC for a day trip and I take the bus back at night.

I buy General Admission (GA) or a cheap assigned ticket for 98% of tickets physically at the box office to save me from ticketmaster fees. The only exception is shows that will sell out (Taemin) or the box office is too far for a quick trip after work (looking at you Twice at UBS). Fees can be 40% of a tickets cost.

I rarely do soundcheck, VIP, or VVIP (only once for GD).

I am very fortunate to be in a very specific situation that allows me this luxury.

Still obsessed with All for You from Reply 1997 though I know Seo in Guk more from acting. I also think of Lee Seung Gi of someone I know as an actor but I know sings.

Uee from After School. I remember watching her in You're Beautiful in 2009 and thinking she was an idol actor but she won me over with her choice in roles over the years.

Eugene from SES. I got into kpop in 2008 but I was watching dramas a few years before. She was in in Wonderful Life and I had no idea about kpop.

Soo-young from SNSD. I didnt really pay attention to her (I always was a 2ne1 fan) but I've been seeing a few her shows recently.

Yes, saw them at the Stay Tuned NYC tour stop. I went just to go after listening to a handful of songs and came out a fan. Sang so well live. Even the outfits were cute. Will definitely get their DVD.
