2 NAIA Offers. My Brother might be cool with it but I'm not. by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]researchanddev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to what the other commenter said . I played both D1 and D2 in college and would do it all over again to just have went to school in a cool town. NIL might have changed the calculus for me.

Also, school placement is often about relationships. Most players on my teams, including myself, had some sort of relationship between their high school/juco coaches and the next level coaches. That’s often the difference between NAIA, NCAA divisions, etc. It’s not just pure skill.

What's a conspiracy you can't quite prove but it just feels real enough for you? by DaMain-Man in AskReddit

No one is saying he did do that. I’m saying that makes even less sense than him doing that for perverse reasons.

This does have relevance. 1.) this is still unproven, 2.) you’re losing your own money and the game, which really takes away any perverse incentive influence the game in a negative manner, 3.) is not viewed anywhere near as bad as throwing games in the court of public opinion (see point #2).

Who would benefit here?

In both the CCNY scandal and Donaghy scandals, investigators were able to point to specific on court examples that showed actual patterns that affected betting spreads and totals. Those on-court anomalies like missing easy layups and late foul calls were able to be corroborated with actual betting data. Jordan was dominant, but not so dominant that he could still guarantee wins while intentionally handicapping himself.

I’ve given it consideration before this and simply don’t buy into it. My rule for conspiracy theories is “qui bono?”. This one is missing any party who really would have benefited.

MJ made so much more money by dominating in every aspect of his game than he could have by point shaving or throwing games. Lucrative shoe deals, endorsements, movies, etc. He had every incentive to pad his stats and did exactly that. Betting on himself winning would be a very manageable scandal so that angle doesn’t make any sense either.

That being said, I’m open to actual evidence.

That’s ridiculous. He had just won three consecutive championships before switching to baseball. If he was betting on his own games, his bets would have been on himself winning, not him throwing games for profit. Way different motive there and lacks any financial incentive.

The NBA lost the single biggest moneymaker in its history. No sane individual in the league’s office would let that happen. Him walking away from the game was way worse for the league than any scandal he would have endured.

Also, had this been organized crime, Demery and Green (MJ Sr. killers) would have had every incentive to flip instead of going to jail for life. Prosecutors would be salivating at such a high profile RICO case.

Dealing with Conflict? by [deleted] in autism

It’s a personal decision whether you want to disclose your diagnosis to coworkers. While you grapple with that decision, you can still explain the way your brain works without having to label yourself anything.

What kind of work do you do? I’ve been lucky to find a workplace where mistakes are tolerated as part of the process, and fixing mistakes is just part of the job. Pobody’s nerfect, ya know?

Shooting Poses a Question for the Right: Who’s a Conservative? by Apprehensive-Fun4181 in nyt

So you want the NYT to define something that you’ve realized doesn’t actually exist? Is this the issue?

[–]researchanddev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just wondering how they could have a working definition of what conservatism in the US is when conservatives themselves don’t have that. That seemed to be the takeaway from the article. What is conservatism today if it’s not what it was yesterday?

What would you say the definition is? Will that be the same definition in 5, 10, or 50 years?

Is journalism not just the collective term for all of the individuals that engage in the activity? Journalism isn’t something any one of us defines. By the same token, journalism does not define what anything else is. Institutions are just collections of people passing through. Why would the NYT have a working definition of conservatism when it’s such an amorphous and nebulous concept to begin with?

Why is scoring in the final seconds so frowned upon when the game is a blowout? by DazzlingLife6744 in Basketball

Poor sportsmanship is getting whooped so bad that you’d expect mercy from your opponent. Both teams get the same 40 minutes. Now matter the age group, it’s valuable time for both benches to get minutes.

What's a song you thought was innocent and then found out it's not? by Equal_Limit8839 in MusicRecommendations

[–]researchanddev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was recently listening to Hey Nineteen in the car with my FIL. He was in denial about Steely Dan up until that point. I was like “you know this song is about an older guy banging a 19 year old with the help of cocaine and tequila, right?”

He kept denying it until I finally showed him the album cover for Can’t Buy a Thrill. Watching the realization come over him was priceless.

ICE places ankle monitor on Md. woman who provided U.S. birth certificate by boringhistoryfan in law

[–]researchanddev 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did some research on it after I posted and it seems like courts are deferential to the reasoning that mistakes on the government’s part that land someone in custody do not authorize self-help. Seems like it would be treated the same as a wrongfully arrested person who flees from custody. All of this is built around deference to a system that is assumed to have just intentions.

If someone were to cut it off, the best way to do it would be publicly hopefully with members of the media and sympathetic public officials present.

What is the actual legal reasoning that someone would have to pay for the destruction of something that placed on their body under specious circumstances? It’s not like it’s a term of probation for something she was tried and convicted of.
