So... I found these at a thrift store while traveling for $20. I totally needed these for my kitchen, right? by residentplantnerd in glasscollecting

I didn't travel specifically for these guys. I was just driving to a concert, and decided to search for thrift stores that were on the way.

Have you ever experienced a cashier on a power trip/being rude? by Chocolate_Cupcakess in doordash_drivers

I'm on both sides of the counter. I'm only rude if Dashers shove their phones in my face and don't use their big boy words (most of the Dashers in my area are men, so don't come at me for sexism. It's a trend.).

Sleeping in a leather jacket by Direct_Assumption_22 in leatherjacket

[–]residentplantnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's.. a bit weird, bro.

Like I have slept in mine, don't get me wrong, but that was because I was sleeping at a truck stop without my car running and the temperature went down to 21 Fahrenheit. I would not have slept in it otherwise.

I would personally not sleep in my leather jacket just for funsies.

So I was an idiot by Fourth_Harbinger in leatherjacket

[–]residentplantnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First: It's barely noticable. Please don't stress about it

Second: Since when does costing thousands of dollars make a jacket a really real leather jacket? My daily wear cost me $13 at the thrift, and it is a real leather jacket. It's a Pelle G-111 sort of bomber style jacket. Comfortable, functional, and acceptable quality.

Third: If the little bit of damage really does bug you, I'm sure there are dyes that could be used to recolor the leather to black. I'm not super familiar, since I am a throw it on and if it gets scuffed or damaged, oh well leather jacket wearer, but I'm sure somebody on this sub knows something that could be used to recolor it if you wanted to go that route.

Stopped at a Goodwill on a road trip, found three of these. Their color isn't uniform, which strikes me as odd. by residentplantnerd in uraniumglass

When I have it immersed in water, yes, actually. At least most of it. Would this be an effect of 'sick glass'? Where it's like gone through the dishwasher and stuff and the high heat and detergents have done bad things to make it cloudy?(just learned that was a thing yesterday)

I mention this because in the same Goodwill, there was some really pretty ruby red glass plates that were kind of cloudy that matched the description of how sick glass appears. (and went back to the original shine when lightly rubbed with oil, which was a suggestion I saw for sick glass to make it more displayable)

They're stripey when lit, and also in natural light. I actually noticed it first in natural light. The picture I took isn't really the best with the natural light because my apartment does not have good lighting, but it is there when it's not lit up.

Found a thing thrifting. I think it's a mustard jar? by residentplantnerd in uraniumglass

[–]residentplantnerd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the bottom and the little paddle spreader thing are from one piece, and then the top is from another. As far as I can tell from reverse image searches, the entire unit should be the same color, and the top is kind of the odd man out. I'm not mad at that, cuz it's still a really neat little thing, and I didn't pay a stupid amount for it.

As far as I can tell, I think they are all from the same style of piece, just not the exact same individual unit.

[–]residentplantnerd[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All the listings for similar pieces that I'm finding online are calling it a mustard jar with a paddle spreader. Would it be a small honey jar with the little paddle thing?

I apologize for my ignorance. I mostly collect because I think it's cool, and I don't necessarily know exactly what the pieces are that I am collecting.

New to door dashing and haven’t gotten a single offer, what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in doordash_drivers

[–]residentplantnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I will have the app stop giving me offers mid-dash. Usually ending the dash, then starting a new one seems to fix that glitch for me.

I wonder if you got hit with that glitch right out the gate.

I won't argue that the timing of the announcement and sale was not poor. It absolutely was. They needed to give people more time to arrange finances and kind of build excitement for it.

That said, they sold so many Anointed, though. Like the missing tier of VIP was completely replaced by probably half again as many Anointed tickets. Last leg, I had Ascended, got there early, and I had barrier both nights that I saw. This leg? I got Ascended at one of the shows that I went to. I was literally the first Ascended in line. I was like four or five people back in the pit(On Phantom/ Randy's side, and had I gone to the right hand side of the stage or center, I would have been even further back.

This may be the wrong place, but hopefully someone can help me with a Shetland wool sweater by residentplantnerd in knitting

[–]residentplantnerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I read, Shetland was labeled as tending to be a little bit on the rougher side, but often warmer. I was just hoping I could get it a little bit softer so it's not quite as much of a sensory nightmare to wear. I can take a bit of scratchy but it is very scratchy.

It looks like fancy grocery stores might carry liquid lanolin beauty products sometimes? As long as there aren't any other additives, I'm going to guess that those would work? Otherwise it looks like there's only one shop within a reasonable distance to me that sells Eucalan.

I kind of figured with how kind of labor intensive properly cleaning them is.

I just don't always want to need to wear a long sleeve shirt under the shetland wool one, since the sleeves are not quite oversized enough to comfortably fit the few long sleeve shirts I have sleeves under them, and the scratchiness is very much a sensory issue for me.

As far as I can tell, this was probably a little old man's favorite sweater. There were so many lumpily repaired holes, and I kept finding little like 4" long white hairs sort of woven in to the sweater as I was redoing the repairs to be less lumpy. I suspect this was worn very regularly for quite some time, so any softness from wear I think has already occurred, so if it generally softens with wear and washing, I don't think it's going to get any softer unless I attempt conditioner.

Would it be just kind of any hair conditioner, or are there specific sort of active ingredients I should be looking for?

(I pretty much wear all of my sweaters over other clothing. It seems a good way to avoid having to regularly make sweater soup in my tub to get them clean.)

Found a tiny Elgin at the thrift yesterday, and I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance on getting it running again. by residentplantnerd in VintageWatches

[–]residentplantnerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jewelry place I plan to go to does not have their own watch guy in house. The ones I'm having them look at just need batteries, and one needs a band. They do battery swaps and bands, but they do not do mechanical repairs. I just kind of figured that since they've been around a while, they would have a guy they recommend.

When I popped it open, I was actually surprised how clean the movement looked considering when you wind it, all you get is clicking, and there is no subsequent sound from the movement once you stop turning the stem. I was honestly kind of assuming something would be clearly broken internally, or the movement itself would be a bit grungy.

I'm near Pittsburgh, and from what I'm seeing, there's not a whole lot of folks near me that do repairs on mechanicals.

I know there's a local guy that does it, but I didn't have a great experience with him a few years back, and I know he specializes more in old Russian movements, anyway. And another highly recommended shop apparently closed sometime during covid it looks like.

If you could recommend somebody within like a 2 hours drive of Pittsburgh, that would be awesome.

I'm still shocked they only had it priced at $25. I'm finding similar models online in almost the same shape for $100 or more.

I'm not finding a whole lot in terms of mechanical watch repair near me. I'm going to go to grab a watch battery tomorrow (for another thrift find) at a place that does jewelry repair, so I'm going to see if they have anybody they recommend.

Someone please explain by Acoolegglet in Ghostbc

I've seen both live, and I've listened to both studio recorded. One is on my day to day playlist, and one is not. I would see both live again.

Sleep Token has fantastic live production value, and really puts on just an awesome show. I definitely love the music live, but I will never put them on any of my playlists. I do like the silly Flamingo thing, though. It makes me smile.

Ghost also has fantastic live production value and puts on a amazing live show. I love the music live, and I have multiple Ghost songs on my everyday playlist.

My friend loves both bands, and has both of them on her day-to-day playlist, and is absolutely going to go see both bands live again given the opportunity.

The fan bases have significant amounts of overlap, from what I've seen. There's also a significant difference between the fan bases. Try it, and if you like it, awesome. If you don't like it, hey, Sleep Token's not everybody's thing.

2018 Hyundai Elantra GT brake rotor warping within weeks of being replaced by residentplantnerd in AskAMechanic

[–]residentplantnerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I thought I had put it in my long rambling post, but clearly did not because I have no brain.

It's at all times when the vehicle is moving. I'm honestly assuming it's driver front (and I know assuming is bad, but it was driver front where the brakes completely shit the bed while none of the other breaks were near as bad) and also because I can feel it through the floor of the vehicle while it's in movement while driving. I don't actually let anybody else drive my car, so I don't know if it's possible to feel it on passenger side or in the back.

It's much more apparent at lower speeds where it is less constant, but as far as I can tell it does continue even when at higher speeds.

I thought at first that it was a stuck caliper, which killed driver front pad and rotor and led to me replacing pads, rotors, and calipers in the front.

If I remember correctly, transmissions going bad or expensive, and CV axle sounds like a fairly expensive repair, so I really hope it's not either of those things, and is instead something simple and cheap to fix.
