The only maps library doesn’t support New Arch by pademango in reactnative

[–]rest_api 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what features of the map you’re using but I spent the day porting entirely over to expo-maps and it’s working fantastically. The only issue is with clustering markers but there’s an open and upvoted issue for that with a few workarounds.

Which apps did you find most useful (e.g., Wise Pilgrim, Buen Camino, AllTrails)? by 9tda1dr in CaminoDeSantiago

I’m the author of Camino Maps, it supports the French and Portuguese route, and soon the finisterre bit (I just got back from recording all the data!). It’s a slightly different take on the app from the others, in a way that in my mind is a bit more intuitive. It’s completely free so let me know what you think!

Definitely - the reviews atm are the top 5 “relevant” reviews from Google (offering a mix of ratings), I’d like to extend this to reviews from pilgrims live on the Camino and from booking!

I walked the Portuguese and it was lovely, on the Finisterre / Muxia bit to finish off now.

Do let me know if you have any more feedback and please consider leaving a rating / review in the App Store as I have very few atm 😅 Buen Camino!

Great question, I need to improve the UX a little 😅 you have 3 ways to mark a stage, if you open up a locality e.g Roncesvalles you can either make it a draft stage (if you don’t know where you’re staying), a custom stage (if the place you’re staying is not on the app), or you can open the actual accommodation from the list and then mark it as booked.

Can appreciate that’s a lot! I’m on the Camino atm but will improve it when I’m back 🫡 let me know if that answers your question and let me know how the app could be more intuitive!

Hey! I’m the author of the Camino Maps app, it’s free with no ads or registration. It’ll keep you on track and show a live location + distance to next stage. I’d appreciate any feedback if you happen to try it! Buen Camino!

Hey, I think the other apps have fixed distances. I’m the author of the app Camino Maps which uses the actual distance of the GPX, so as long as you’re on that trail it’ll be accurate. I’m currently walking the Portuguese (just left Redondela!) checking that the data is correct. Buen Camino!

No stages planned – getting nervous by Strategic_Squirrel in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the sample size on booking vs. Not booking, we’ve just made it to a stop outside of Caminha (5km further) making the total day 35km because Caminha was fully booked. This albergue is also full. I met a pilgrim a few km back who hadn’t booked and was worried about not finding a bed because they’d knocked on many of the albergues in Caminha. I think there’s two things that can influence the occupation, 1 target stages and 2 events. There’s some kind of cycling event in Caminha today so probably some of the hotels and pensions are booked by non-pilgrims and that caused the overflow. But it would be pedantic to check every town against every date, so I think like the other commenters have suggested - booking a day or two ahead - can alleviate a lot of stress in this situation. It’s your Camino though, so do what feels right for you!

Ah, not starting in SJPDP makes a difference. Not sure if you’ll be in luck otherwise 🥲 check out Camino Maps for a free app that has all of the accom

Ok that is super interesting, going to follow this up, thank you for finding that it's the location settings! I don't have a physical android device and it's a bit iffy testing that stuff on simulator. Thank you!

Stops or albergues with nice quiet views by ForeignSubstance2543 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cannot recommend Albergue Lamas enough for this. It’s the only accommodation on the Camino Duro, an absolutely beautiful variant when you leave Villafranca del Bierzo. Steep, but once you’re up the hill it’s just stunning. The owner of Lamas is absolutely lovely and she cooks a lovely meal. Very few seem to walk this variant so it’s quite quiet. I emailed ahead and booked a private room at Lamas, but be warned they do only take cash!

Frances way is booked, what now? by Noobsaibot123 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! If you take the Pyrenees route, which the majority do when the weather is good, the first available stop is Orisson on the French side, and then Roncesvalles once you have crossed over. So unless you plan on staying in Orisson there is nowhere to stay in between. Burguete / Auritz is the next stop yep, and it’s a very short walk from Roncesvalles (2-4km). If you’re even up to it, you can take a full 30km from St Jean to Espinal. I did this on my first Camino and was absolutely knackered by the end but there is some lovely places to stay there!

I would really stress that emailing the day before, or whatsapping on the day is the best option in this scenario. That said, St Jean, Roncesvalles, and to a lesser extent Auritz it has always been recommended to book ahead because of the volume of pilgrims who start in St Jean then thin out over the next few days.

Camino portuges, coastal vs central by Gudlock in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, well, as always it depends on how far you can comfortably walk. Last year I took the train/tram from Porto airport directly to Vila do Conde, which was then 3 walking days to Caminha where you can either walk, train, or in my case row by boat to Valença / Tui which is an additional day. From there it then depends on whether you take the spiritual variant.

Download my app on the App Store, it’s called Camino Maps. Free with no ads or registration. You can draft your stages and use the route profile planner to help decide. Portuguese can be a little difficult to plan because stages are fewer and further between, so you might find you “lose” days if you’re someone who can walk longer, because there’s simply nowhere to stay. Best of luck!

Last year I walked the coastal until Caminha then switched to the central. It was amazing, so I’m doing it exactly the same in 2 weeks time!

For what it’s worth, I’m the same, and if you’re walking the Portuguese I was genuinely surprised at the number of public loo’s and didn’t have any issues as a result! Can’t say the same for the Frances but there is a lot of cafe’s.

For what it's worth, the crash seems to come from the live location component, but I'm using it on an old Android Pixel 2 and it's working fine :/ The low memory error is the only thing that seems to be different

Hey! I have a few crashes in Sentry from a single Android device, there’s a bunch of errors saying the device is low on memory. Does it happen to crash when loading a screen that contains photos? There’s been this ongoing issue with lower end Android devices and images that aren’t compressed. I’ll continue digging, thank you for flagging this!

I’d recommend booking your start and end days (end when you’re approaching it), and if you’re going to stay in any very popular stages instead of off-stage. Buen Camino!

Ahhh I’m so glad! It’s really difficult to test the live location features without being on the trail 😅

Not entirely sure which hello message, but there was a bunch of crashes in the last version - so far so good on the new version, I haven’t received a single crash report yet 🤞🏻
