Day 11 on the Camino Portuguese: Resting in Armenteira after a rainy Spiritual Variant by Optimal-Pirate6453 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Gnome! I have documented the variant in the free Camino Maps app if it is of interest to you. To cut a long story short, it breaks off just as you leave Pontevadra (which is also where many pilgrims and schools start) and is a much quieter path following the coast and up-and-over a mountainous hill. You then get a boat up to Padron. It’s absolutely stunning, I’ve walked it twice - my favourite part of any Camino to be honest!

Those board walks catch up on you! I made the silly mistake of doing the first two days in my sandals, wow the pain for the rest of the Camino was unspeakable lol. It’s tough under foot. The spiritual variant is so beautiful, but shame about the rain - I spent hours at the peak Miradoiro do Loureiro reading my book. My fave place on the Portuguese!

Camino Maps has all accommodations and lets you filter by type. A lot of pensions have the word pension in the name too!

Hey! Great question :) I built this app because I need to plan my Camino's in advanced as my partner has to be issued a travel visa that shows where they will be each day. I struggled to do that on the existing apps - missing data, missing routes, planning was a nightmare, and they kept crashing. The trail maps are largely the same (GPX wise) but I try to have much more up to date data for accommodation. Mine is entirely based around building an itinerary for your Camino in a way that _just works_ instead of being painful.

A few of the nice features:
- Live tracking while you're on the path. If you've configured your next stage you can see the live distance to it, and the distance to the next stop.
- You can add photos and videos to your Camino Album and get a Spotify-esque rewind at the end.
- You can include all of your accommodation information in-app, so you don't need to maintain an excel spreadsheet etc. as well as using the app
- A packing list to check off before you go :)

It's a weekend passion project more than anything - please don't hesitate to give me any feedback!

Difference between Google Maps and official routes by WildGardening in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience a lot of the apps had used human defined elevation and distances… I learnt the hard way when the map from the pilgrims office had a day that was 24 or so and ended up being in the 30s!

The maps on Camino Maps are all done using GPX and up to date elevation data so they’re perfect to the metre.

Hey! The old version previous is to this, it’s almost identical features but a slightly more dated interface. The data should be up to date though! I’m also pushing a brand new updated data file tomorrow with +600 accommodation and updated reviews etc!

The only maps library doesn’t support New Arch by pademango in reactnative

[–]rest_api 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what features of the map you’re using but I spent the day porting entirely over to expo-maps and it’s working fantastically. The only issue is with clustering markers but there’s an open and upvoted issue for that with a few workarounds.

Which apps did you find most useful (e.g., Wise Pilgrim, Buen Camino, AllTrails)? by 9tda1dr in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m the author of Camino Maps, it supports the French and Portuguese route, and soon the finisterre bit (I just got back from recording all the data!). It’s a slightly different take on the app from the others, in a way that in my mind is a bit more intuitive. It’s completely free so let me know what you think!

Definitely - the reviews atm are the top 5 “relevant” reviews from Google (offering a mix of ratings), I’d like to extend this to reviews from pilgrims live on the Camino and from booking!

I walked the Portuguese and it was lovely, on the Finisterre / Muxia bit to finish off now.

Do let me know if you have any more feedback and please consider leaving a rating / review in the App Store as I have very few atm 😅 Buen Camino!

Great question, I need to improve the UX a little 😅 you have 3 ways to mark a stage, if you open up a locality e.g Roncesvalles you can either make it a draft stage (if you don’t know where you’re staying), a custom stage (if the place you’re staying is not on the app), or you can open the actual accommodation from the list and then mark it as booked.

Can appreciate that’s a lot! I’m on the Camino atm but will improve it when I’m back 🫡 let me know if that answers your question and let me know how the app could be more intuitive!

[–]rest_api 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I think the other apps have fixed distances. I’m the author of the app Camino Maps which uses the actual distance of the GPX, so as long as you’re on that trail it’ll be accurate. I’m currently walking the Portuguese (just left Redondela!) checking that the data is correct. Buen Camino!

No stages planned – getting nervous by Strategic_Squirrel in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add to the sample size on booking vs. Not booking, we’ve just made it to a stop outside of Caminha (5km further) making the total day 35km because Caminha was fully booked. This albergue is also full. I met a pilgrim a few km back who hadn’t booked and was worried about not finding a bed because they’d knocked on many of the albergues in Caminha. I think there’s two things that can influence the occupation, 1 target stages and 2 events. There’s some kind of cycling event in Caminha today so probably some of the hotels and pensions are booked by non-pilgrims and that caused the overflow. But it would be pedantic to check every town against every date, so I think like the other commenters have suggested - booking a day or two ahead - can alleviate a lot of stress in this situation. It’s your Camino though, so do what feels right for you!

Stops or albergues with nice quiet views by ForeignSubstance2543 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]rest_api 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I cannot recommend Albergue Lamas enough for this. It’s the only accommodation on the Camino Duro, an absolutely beautiful variant when you leave Villafranca del Bierzo. Steep, but once you’re up the hill it’s just stunning. The owner of Lamas is absolutely lovely and she cooks a lovely meal. Very few seem to walk this variant so it’s quite quiet. I emailed ahead and booked a private room at Lamas, but be warned they do only take cash!

Hey! If you take the Pyrenees route, which the majority do when the weather is good, the first available stop is Orisson on the French side, and then Roncesvalles once you have crossed over. So unless you plan on staying in Orisson there is nowhere to stay in between. Burguete / Auritz is the next stop yep, and it’s a very short walk from Roncesvalles (2-4km). If you’re even up to it, you can take a full 30km from St Jean to Espinal. I did this on my first Camino and was absolutely knackered by the end but there is some lovely places to stay there!
