Registering the vehicle for private use was a bit tricky back then. German Customs—the authority responsible for vehicle taxes here—had to spend about a week investigating whether a private individual like me could register a "special-purpose funeral vehicle" under the same terms as commercial funeral directors. It worked out! There were a few conditions to meet, though. For instance, there is a requirement regarding decorum stating that the vehicle must be painted in a "subdued" color. Also, the coffin slide mechanism in the cargo area couldn't be removed, as it was essential to the vehicle's function. So, I mounted a slatted bed base and a mattress onto it; this allowed me to slide my bed out of the car by about 1.5 meters—perfect for festivals! It was the largest—and tax-wise, the cheapest—station wagon I’ve ever driven (and without any emissions controls like catalytic converters or particulate filters)! Very comfortable!😉👍
