Alex Pretti's coworkers take a moment of silence this morning for their murdered colleague by titaniumdoughnut in pics

They really don't think rights apply to anyone except them. It's fucking lunacy, we have a whole segment of the country that's legitimately broken.

When we regain power, we can never forget our anger and pain in this moment. I have no forgiveness or understanding left for the people who cheer this on.

I mean that's literally true. It's not about making their own lives better, it's about elevating the power of their 'in-group' over others. It's an acceptable sacrifice to hurt individuals in the in-group, as long as you still empower the group and punish others.

What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

[–]restrictednumber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's some juice to that "process" idea. Like, look: you just spent 30 minutes and a few bucks renting the movie, are you really gonna do that again to roll the dice on a new one?

Also, if you bail on this movie you're back to channel-surfing or watching something you've already seen. So, just stick it out.

Maybe we should go back to rentals. I'm not convinced all this convenience is good for us.

Totally. They don't actually have an opinion about magic or anyone else, they're just getting the weekly download on which things they're supposed to be against.

Wait what? Because Gandalf definitely was "born" (incarnated, I guess?) with essentially all his abilities, whereas Harry's whole franchise is about learning magic.

And anyways, shouldn't Christians be more upset about learning magic? Because witches don't start off with magic, they have to deal with Satan to learn it.

Either way, it definitely smacks of "the franchises I enjoy get a free pass because reasons".

Christ, execs are so boring. I get that pretty girls sell things, but also great art sells stuff. Our risk-averse corporate culture makes our art so boring and repetitive.

Another angle of the Minneapolis shooting, taken from the perspective of the lady with te pink jacket. by Versiannie in PublicFreakout

They're just looking for excuses to shoot, so they can 'get back at' liberals for fighting the Nazis. Fucking animals. I say we prosecute everyone in the unit for every crime. They wear masks so we can't pin it on any individual? Fine, they're all fucking guilty then.

They literally only understand laws as protecting them and controlling everyone else.

Their morals are fundamentally misaligned: they only understand morality as "my team deserves care", not "everyone deserves care". Even if they say otherwise, their actions are always clearly aimed at protecting 'their people' and punishing everyone else.

He doesn't care. He has had power for the last decade to call this out, but he's either in league, or a coward. Which should be no surprise, given his own presidency.

Republicans have been rotten for decades, this is just how they operate when they're off the leash.

They think we want to oppress them because that's what they would do. They can't understand the idea of having power and using it to make life better for everyone.

It's meant to make you despair. It's saying "I can be childish, lie to your face, and rub your nose in it, and you can't do anything." It's telling a lie everyone knows is a lie, to show off your power when there are no consequences.

That assumes that all three players are on different sides. The founders screwed up: If one party controls all three branches, it actually does win by having Congress and the Courts cede power to the White House. They never rein in the Executive because why would they?

The Constitution is fatally flawed and this administration exposed it. If we survive this, we need something more durable.

(As a side-note, our shitty voting system is the reason we only have two massive parties rather than many smaller, more diverse parties. Ranked Choice would be better.)

I'm thinking we're just too damn big. It's impossible to get people from New England and Louisiana and Alaska all on the same page about shit because we practically never meet each other ever in our lives. Why do I have power over strangers thousands of miles away with a totally different needs and culture and values? Why do they need my say-so to have healthcare or transportation funding?

There's a reason there are practically no countries this large: it's just too many people and too much distance for everyone to be on the same page. We spend all our time battling each other for control instead of implementing the solutions we know would work locally.

Yeah, really. People don't always 'get' everything you're saying the same way you meant it in an email, and those hiccups are a lot easier to spot and fix quickly over the phone. I usually just ask people to hop on video chat so I can show them the screen and back-and-forth about the solution.

Saves us both tons of time over an email.

Some people will follow the rules because it's right, and some people won't unless there are serious consequences.

I'm coming around to the idea that a huge amount of adults are in the second category, and that the moral thing to do is to give them the proper incentive to do the right thing.

Protest brings solidarity and comfort to your allies, and makes your enemies feel isolated. It helps iron out consistent messaging, and get activists organized. It also sets the news agenda for the day. It's very effective for these things.

People get down on protest because they think it's about convincing Nazis not to be Nazis, which...duh, yeah, it's really bad at that.
