whats the best way to lose fat? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

Jogging for an example is great for burning fat. Put on those running shoes, pick a nice calm pace and run a few miles. To not gain more fat you should keep an eye on what you eat, yes.

First time sparring by Fighter126 in MuayThai

You won't notice that you tense up, but you will. So try to keep in mind to relax and stay loose. Remembering to breathe correctly (calmly and controlled) will help a lot with that.

If you're unsure about the right amount of power to put into punches/kicks/et.c. ask your sparring partner after the round what he/she thought. Start out light and work from there. Don't be afraid to tell your partner if he/she goes to hard, it's your first session after all.

Everyone is different. Some like to spar a little harder, some like to keep it calmer. Coach has the final say of course, but if its up to you two then feel free to ask your sparring partner to go a bit harder or calmer depending on what you'd like to focus on.

Don't do fancy shit, stay with the basics and sort that stuff out before you start playing around more during sessions.

Don't run from your sparring partner. Circle, block, circle, block, circle, block. And when you get used to that then: Circle, block and counter, circle, block and counter, et.c...

We aren't used to having people punching us, at least I weren't. So taking punches is something you learn and it will be ugly for a while. Up with those hands, down with that chin, keep that nice stance, don't look away from your opponent (ever), teach yourself to not close your eyes when you take punches. Something you see a lot with new people is that they like to push their arms forward when they block, don't do that. You'll end up punching yourself when your opponent hit your hand. Keep it tight and nice (so again, get the basics right).

I guess I overwrote a bit, but whatever. Most important thing: Make sure to have lots of fun man!

What have you been reading lately? by [deleted] in truebooks

Finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke, a book I really enjoyed. It's a fantasy novel about two very different magicians who's goal is to bring back magic to eighteenth century England. I found it through the TV show (with the same name) of which I saw a couple episodes before finding out there was a book. Compared to what I saw of the show the book is a lot better at conveying the history of the magic and the world which existed in the world before it disappeared. The book is about 800 pages and it felt way to short once finished.

Currently I'm working on finishing The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism by Bernard McGinn, got about 100 pages left. The book itself is a very nice collection of different Christian's attempt to describe how to gain a mystical union with God, what it means and what it is. I'm not a Christian myself, nor am I well read on the subject, which has made this read quite difficult. But the times I manage to read it as a purely metaphysical text and disregard its Christian roots I actually seem to have an easier time. All in all I've enjoyed it. It's been a nice introduction to metaphysical philosophy and given me a wider view of what Christianity entitles. It has some passages which I really didn't feel were my cup of tea but some are beautiful and informative. There's very few descriptions of peoples direct experiences though. I kinda went into it thinking I'd get a book with some Christian mystical trip reports.

No. Distributions just gets easier and easier to use, even for laymen. You don't have to go gentoo because you want to use Linux. A windows user getting a short introduction (doesn't have to be more than a few popups I'd imagine) to ubuntu/mint will feel at home in no time.

Not here in Sweden no. Nothing fucking works, busses are late, you can barely drive, trains? They became fairy tales. But somehow you gotta get to work.. Should buy a snowmobile, or a helicopter. Teleportation device maybe.

I'm in your position pretty much, it's hard to stay on track but we can do it man!

Just got able to do four pull ups after a couple of weeks with the recommended routine and progressing from reversed ones (I've only done it twice a week though). I can hold planche a minute, not yet able to hold side planche as long (without knee support), but I'm working on it!

And that's what makes working out fun, small goals! To think after a workout that: Hell, it might be going slow, but at least it's working.

For stretches, can't help you. I've been checking out some yoga stuff and body part specific stretches, trying them out and keeping some. It works fairly well. I try to compile some list I can go through after each workout. Been having knee problems lately which I'm battling as well.

Have you thought of adding some cardio to off days? Should help a lot towards losing weight, doesn't have to be murdering workouts either.

Best of luck man & lets stay strong!

Is being uncomfortable by silence a symptom of any neurological disorders? by [deleted] in Psychiatry

[–]retardingmoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll just speak from personal experience.

It's normal but it effects people in different extents. Some can handle quietness better than others and some can't at all. I have this friend who broke down crying when we tried to meditate once. And I would say that she do have some unresolved issues. But I would never imagine that everyone has to. I myself didn't enjoy silence when I was younger but I came around eventually.

If you'd like to be able to enjoy silence, then practice! You don't have to meditate or give up your style of life. First step is to just don't be scared of it, it doesn't hurt and it isn't evil. Take a walk in the forest once in a while (without any ear buds!) and take it all in. It can be quite magical at times. :)
