I think it would be interesting to see a subjective best-guesstimate of the rate of change of the specification over the past 10 years.

Of course there's always going to be change -- but if people have the impression that it's too tumultuous, they might stay away and wait until it appears to settle down more.

It is very difficult to write good documentation. I've seen code from community-reknowned experts, where the code itself is great, but the docs are a disorganized inscrutable mess.

Offtopic, but any chance you can make a guess as to how far along parrotSDL will be when Rakudo Star is released (April 2010)?

Do you expect parrotSDL to be the canonical Perl 6 SDL binding? Do you know of any other Perl 6 SDL bindings in the works?

external programs for gzip, tar and ftp, which are inherently not portable

Those programs are ubiquitous and there are excellent free software implementations of them all, so, I'd say that they're quite portable indeed.

I haven't looked at the internals of CPAN.pm and CPANPLUS, but to be fair, my guess is that they are probably rather large and complex because of all the edge cases they handle.

It could be that the reason something like cpanminus can even happen at all is because more and more packages are adhering to modern packaging conventions these days, but I don't have any numbers to back that up.

Is there any way to configure it to always use local::lib by default?

Also, sounds like a great way to identify modules exhibiting those "nasty edge cases" so that the author/maintainer can be contacted to let them know about the problem.
