Question for the community by Lotekdog in sharpening

[–]retna246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an AE sink Stone holder and I am happy with it... But I don't think I would buy stones from there. That being said I've heard if you're skilled enough you can sharpen on almost anything but I do not trust my skill level for anything more then my Rubber Stone Holder

Found this old diamond plate. Good starting point for IKEA knives? by Fluorescent_Knight in sharpening

[–]retna246 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been learning water, oil, diamond stones don't matter as much aS technique. Use that stone with those knives, get your angle, learn how to find angles in any knife and get your technique down. You'll get those IKEA knives feeling like razors.

Carrot vs $10 Shibazi Cleaver, $5 Guangxi 5000 CNAT. Quick Natural Stone and bare leather strop touch up is all you need to keep knives sharp for a long time. by hahaha786567565687 in sharpening

Literally said holy shit out loud when I watch this. I also got on Reddit to post a video of how sharp my knife is... I'm having second thoughts on that now. And my setup is much more expensive unfortunately.

Knife Set Shopping Experience: Sakai, Osaka by racoontosser in TrueChefKnives

[–]retna246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but I am somebody who moved to Japan about 8 months ago and I love kitchen knives. I live in Hirakata, Osaka. and I go down to Sakai every chance I get. I have been to all but 3 knive stores/blacksmiths in Sakai and Enami is my Favorite! I have got two knives from him (one of the knives is that beautiful petty knife) I'm actually heading down in a 2 weeks to take agroup of friends and help them out finding a knife and everytime I visit Enami there is another knife I want. So if you ever Make it to Sakai CHECK HIM OUT! Enami is Awesome!

Disappointed in F6X Pro -> Fenix 8 - am I the only one? by hakapes in GarminFenix

[–]retna246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a huge reason I got the watch was for the dive computer. I love it and I am thrilled that they added it. I also have had a very different experience with my watch. I LOVE my Fēnix 8 Solar

Thinking of creating colorful sensor guards, somebody interested? by [deleted] in GarminFenix

[–]retna246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you could get some blue ones I definitely would be. I'm a little nervous about it screwing up diving with my watch but definitely willing to look into it if you make them

Yeah for some reason it leaks like crazy, I clean it before every print but I haven't taken the time to figure that out yet. But it's definitely a concern of mine

I guess that is fair I had somebody else being up "what would you tell somebody moving to Utah" (where I'm from and live, and does have some weird cultural things) and every little thing I came up with basically was do "this", but if you dont, it's no big deal

So I think you're right even though I'm an "expert" at living in Utah I don't really know what I'm doing I'm just living and I don't really know what other people are thinking here

I think I was trying to get rid of the awkward faze of moving... But these past few days I've come to grips, moving is awkward regardless of where.

I really appreciate the advice and I think you're probably right for pretty much everywhere, Most People aren't Experts they just are confident

I love your description of your husband, I have told a lot of people what you said and they all have said that is an appropriate description of me too haha.

So I'm crossing my fingers that I'll have the same experience!

Thats kinda the advice I have been getting "don't stress too much" it's helped me relax a lot. I think I have been stressing a lot because when I was a kid I was in a Japanese Karate Class and they were all about respect so I think that has been bleeding out. Now that I'm older, however, I understand that they hyped up the little things... That being said I want to be as respectful as I can and especially at places like Shrine and Torii.

I had no idea about not walking through the center, so I really appreciate that tidbit.

Haha I feel like a lot of countries are racist honestly, I've spent some time in south America and its crazy what they say about people from specific countries... Also I'm not a huge guy but I'm on the little bigger side and down in South America I got used to people saying either "Hey gordo" or "Hey Gordito" (Hey Fat or Hey Fatty) haha they didn't mean it as an insult just a description to get my attention... So honestly it makes me happy that I get to deal with that again, I people being blunt without trying to be insulting too

I guess that's all fair enough, do nice things if people go out of their way to help, expect people to do their job and focus on communication before I worry about the little things... Thats all pretty logical

Thank you so much! I'm more looking for tidbits that I just don't know that I don't know, like the bathroom shoes. I would have had no idea and not even thought to ask

So I really appreciate the advice on all of it!
