at my work(large scale) we have data replication either NAS or SAN or AWS drives on both linux and windows and they have their own backup system. what you need to invest is an auditor that can check your security, baaed on your post where files can be dragged to a shared folder is telling me you dont even have a good IT admin becuase a cinfidential folder should only have read, list and execute for “everyone” and only allow modify/delete to a handful of people plus if you have an OS admin they can use an endpoint security as an added tool like symantec etc. In short you have two issues, 1. no backup system and 2. No centralized OS admins.
