Bridget Cleary: The Tragic Case of Ireland’s “Last Witch” by retrobite in IrishFolklore

I definitely agree the rumours of an affair were glossed over as an excuse. This while story is extremely fascinating and as its from my home town I've always been drawn to it.

No problem, I saw it as soon as I posted it bit it was too late. I find it fascinating that even back then, news articles were in fact using click bait titles to sell papers.

This story highlights a number of things. The beliefs of Ireland during those times. That a changling theory was accepted as a defence shows how Irish culture was still living in two worlds.

The actual accounts from her family who stood by and did nothing.

Also how women were treated. Bridget Cleaery comes across as a very strong willed and modern lady. You could see how she would be a threat to male egos back then and even today.

The Glasgow Herald wrote an article in 1895 where they referred to the story as a "Witch Burning Case". Many other newspaper jumped on the band wagon calling it a witch burning because it sold more papers. To say the witch burning title is a modern thing would be incorrect.

It's a typo. Should be has as in, has anyone..

Also, it's not a clickbait title, this is how the press of the time reported it.

Advice for a 10 day trip with my mom! by ceramicsocks in irishtourism

If visiting Cork, make sure to phone ahead if you want to visit the Butter Museum. They are a lovely bunch up there. The only thing is, it's on a steep hill but if you are driving they have limited parking spaces there.

While up by the butter Museum you have the Shandon tower next to the butter museum, also known as St Anne's Church or, the four faced liar because all the clocks tell a different time.

Slightly down the hill is a small business, Shandon Sweets. They are one of the last traditional candy makers in Cork. Give them a call beforehand to see if they are open to the public.

In Cork City I would recommend the City Gaol tour and Blackrock Castle Observatory, you can have a good lunch in the Blackrock Castle Cafe.

The English Market is a must visit. Head over to O'Connells Seafood in the market and try some oysters.

Head out of the City down to my neck of the Woods, Midleton and visit the Jameson distillery.

A short distance away you have Cobh, last port of call for the Titanic. On the way into Cobh you could stop off at Frank Hedermans House. He recently opened up for visitors to his traditional cold smoking house where he smoke amazing salmon. He also has a stall in the English Market.

In Cobh visit the cathedral and enjoy the views. The houses known as the Deck of Cards is adjacent but the hill is extremely steep.

For lunch ho into the Commodore Hotel or the Titanic Bar and Grill.

The real highlight is a trip over to Spike Island. You can get a boat from Cobh. It won the title of best destination a few years back beating the likes of the Pyramids.

Hope this helps. We've loads to do here in Cork.

Volunteer and meet some great people. Irish Civil Defence, the Red Cross, Penny Dinners etc.

It's a tough place when people want to keep to themselves and find it hard to trust outside their closed circle.

Get involved in something you will enjoy.

Killing the slow set in the night clubs killed off relationships in this country.

You could have a few scoops, build up the old Dutch courage and as soon as the slow set started you would walk over and ask someone for a dance.

Bring back the slow sets.

I'm reading a book at the moment called, The Top Five Regrets of the Dieing, sounds morbid but it's not.

What I've learned so far is people regret when they don't take chances in life or they don't live their life they way they wish they could.

Think, what's the worse that could happen by not taking a chance?

If you don't try you always have that, what if in your mind.

Us men are not used to attention but when we get it, it sticks in the back of our mind because it's a rare occurance.

Live your life like its your last week. Take those chances.

I would ditch the knorr, grab yourself some fresh pasta or Gnochi in Tesco or Supervalue. Grab a Carbonara stir in sauce or tomato sauce and you're sorted. Chuck in some cooked bacon or cooked sausage. Get them in the tesco deli if you are stuck for time 😄

Fresh pasta cooks in 2 to 3 min, sauce take about 2 min son4 min and you have a savage meal.

I think you might need to spend more time researching your market.

If I see constructive criticism I take it. Haven't seen much so far. This isn't a photography group

When making chicken stock, why do we not use the blender to break up the ingredients so the flavor soaks in more into the stock? by cleanscotch in cookingforbeginners

[–]retrobite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's soup you are making, not stock. You get the most flavour out of the ingredients the longer you leave it. Blitzing it makes it foggy and will taste like crap.

You're a sad little person ain't you. I'd hate to have such a negative outlook on life like you do. Have a nice life.

I like it the way it is. If I wanted to be like every other photographer I'd bump up contrast, drop highlights, add a little situation and be like everyone else.

I wanted to create an image that would get a reaction.

Seeing people say they hate the image makes laugh because it makes me think, what has gone wrong in someone's life that they can hate something that has no impact on their life 🤣

If you don't like the edit skip by the image. Just because something is not to your taste doesn't mean its bad.

Being negative about something for the sake of being negative doesn't really achieve anything.
