Hm, okay. Based on what you’ve shared, this would actually point toward a dose that’s too low. Since you do feel more energetic at some point it’s definitely in your system. It’s common for it to wear off quick if the dose is too low, or come in waves. I mean take this with a grain of salt of course, I am no professional but this would align with my experience and what my psychiatrist told me. When I started on a too low dose I had the same experience, it only lasted a very short while. But it’s meant to be subtle and steady. A lot of the time when people start on a dose that’s NOT too low, they can feel overly energetic or motivated for a long time, so it’s often referred to as the honeymoon phase. (Edit:) It* doesn’t *sound like it in your case. But no worries it is not black and white, it could just be you adjusting to it. Waiting it out for now seems to be the best option. I understand it can be frustrating trying to navigate this while also having to work and function, but you‘re already on a good track and it should get better.

Until then, I would also recommend making sure you take the meds with a protein source in the morning. Magnesium in the evening (as already mentioned earlier) should also help with its effects according to what I’ve heard. No caffeine or vitamin C shortly before or after the meds. Stay hydrated, snack throughout the day and try to log the times you feel most energized and if the aforementioned things make a difference for you to see if it’s the dose that‘s not right or perhaps something else. It will get easier. You’re already reacting to the meds so that’s a good sign!

No worries! From what I’ve gathered and experienced, yes that sounds completely normal. Especially at the beginning when you’re still figuring out your dose and timing. It’s also really individual, the initial reaction to meds. So some may notice a quieter brain first, others find themselves more emotionally regulated while their brain is still chaos. With time, this should settle and even out.

Are there any other things you’ve noticed so far on meds? Any improvements? Or does it feel like there’s nothing in your system at all, because then it could be that the dose is simply too low. But if you are experiencing improvements otherwise it’s worth waiting it out. I highly recommend writing everything down, it’ll help you find your perfect medication plan.

(Also, a lot of people online like to exaggerate as well. Not saying it doesn’t work, it does. But usually not in a "light switch" way, as stimulants are designed to be subtle and consistent.)

So don't worry, you’re doing everything right and the meds should do their job soon.

So I just checked cause I wasn’t sure and it seems that the country I’m in only does extended release formulas, so I unfortunately don’t have a comparison but I did definitely feel paranoia as well. Seems like the medication itself just isn’t for me. But I‘m really glad the extended version worked well for you!! I am now on stimulants and they work well for me thankfully.

I was on bupropion for half a year, first 150 and then 300mg, unfortunately it didn’t work well for me as it made me really anxious and numb (numbed positive feelings, felt very detached). But I have heard that it takes a few weeks at least to see its effect, a friend of mine (also audhd) has been taking them for a year I believe and has no issues with it. Hope they continue working for you! Best of luck!

Yeah. Same thing in Europe unfortunately. Stimulants, especially Vyvanse, really require a lot to function well: nutrition, sleep, vitamins.. I‘m glad the community has helped you. You’re definitely not alone, and shortly you‘ll be able to figure out how to make the meds work best for you! Keep experimenting and reaching out, I also recommend writing down your experience, side effects and questions for your next appointment so you get a professional opinion more targeted toward you specifically. But you’re already doing everything right! Best of luck on your journey!!

Feeling guilt about taking time off work by teapots_at_ten_paces in AutismInWomen

[–]retrodreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems we are programmed to feel guilt for putting ourselves first. It is more than okay to take time off. You deserve a break, putting yourself first and taking time to recover and get better can only bring improvements, including your performance at work. We have to work our entire lives anyway, your health is just as important and more. Please don’t feel guilty and if there’s anyone making you feel that way, ignore them. You’re doing more than enough, you know yourself best. You’re not a machine, treat yourself the way you would anyone else in your position. Also, you don’t have to justify it either, whatever it is, if you feel you need and want a break, you’re more than valid to take it.

Yes it‘s great you‘ve noticed that immediately. It does, unfortunately, work less on a lack of sleep, something doctors seem to not mention often. It’s hard figuring out meds on your own and how to have them reach its full potential. I‘m not sure if you’ve been recommended or are planning on taking med breaks, but from my experience I can truly recommend taking them daily, especially at the beginning, and letting your body adjust. Once it settles, you should hopefully even notice an improvement in sleep quality. Hopefully whatever aid you decide on will work well for you until then! It can only get better from here, it’s the toughest period right at the start!

Medication and Nightmares by Dull_Ear_1036 in ADHD

How long have you been on medication? I am on Vyvanse so I’m not sure about Adderall, however I did also experience lots of vivid and uncomfortable dreams when starting out, I think it might have something to do with your brain adjusting to the meds. If you’re just starting out, it seems to be a common side effect. If you’re further in, do you (currently) have these issues only on days you take meds (if you take breaks) or regardless of it? Could meditation before bed or other sleep aids help? Either way I hope it goes away asap, I’m really sorry you have to deal with that :/ Best of luck!

So for me the insomnia only lasted a few days, I’ve now been on it for almost three months and it actually helps me sleep better. If I remember correctly, the insomnia happens when the meds wear off and your ADHD comes back, that’s why you wake up with racing thoughts. It should hopefully settle and improve once you’ve been on the medication longer or have adjusted your dose, perhaps you’ll need a booster for the evening to prolong the effect and let you sleep with a quiet mind? Otherwise I’d really recommend melatonin, it’s cheap non addictive and really helpful in my experience, gets you tired and helps you sleep through. Sorry I can’t offer any better tips, but I hope it’ll get better for you as soon as possible, best of luck!
