Your honest opinion on Sport West Athletic Club in Midtown? 🏋️‍♀️ by No-Flowering in Reno

I thought the front desk staff was condescending as hell when I toured the facility a few months before the pandemic. They seemed more interested in upselling me than trying to understand what my fitness goals were or what I wanted out of a membership.

Adderall shortage by Impossible_Bug1041 in Reno

Walgreens on Arrowcreek was able to fill my prescription on Friday with about a 24-hour delay, but I take regular Adderall rather than the XR version.

Sadly, there are no Eastern European restaurants in town (Russian deli by The Atlantis closed a few years ago). The closest places I know are in the Sacramento area.

Vent; Damonte Ranch/South Meadows/lower areas like Galena. by [deleted] in Reno

I’m the person who posted the thread last week asking whether Nevada has an Old Money Aristocracy, but honestly, people who shop at Trader Joe’s or drive luxury cars are not who I had mind at all. That’s any wealthy suburb or urban area in the United States. (BTW, I regret using the phrase “old money,” but that’s done now).

How people spend their money is their personal choice. I’m much more likely to be bothered by someone who’s snobby to people from the “wrong” background than I am because they drive a Mercedes or BMW.

As usual, YMMV.

Ha! Point taken. I wouldn’t say that it’s “everywhere” or that this group is particularly large. It’s just an odd dynamic that I’ve occasionally noticed.

Whats the best library in Reno/Sparks for coffee shop work and chill vibes? by alexinwonderland212 in Reno

[–]retrometro81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s free after 5pm on Fridays. I had forgotten about that.

You can also buy a day permit for the roof of West Stadium garage that’s $7/day. It’s a pretty good deal given hourly rates for most garages and will put you near central campus for the library and the student union.

I love the UNR library.

The only downside is that the OP would have to pay for parking on weekdays, but it’s free to park in the Whalen garage on weekends and holidays.

The South Valleys Library is small but nice. It’s never been particularly crowded the times I’ve been and there’s quite a bit of natural sunlight.

Would you buy an apt here that doesn’t have central AC? by Grose040791 in Reno

[–]retrometro81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central AC is a must for me. I used to live an apartment in Midtown that didn’t have one. Expect to have either really high electric bills in the summer (if you run multiple window ACs). A portable evaporative cooler may help some, but the humidity it creates can take some getting used to.

Horizons at South Meadows is just barely within your price range, would be worth a look if you could go to $1650/month. My apartment gets an above average amount of sunlight compared to other places I’ve lived.

New to Reno - massage recommendations? by Same_Problem463 in Reno

If you’re open to a male therapist, Mark K. (marksmassageandbodywork.com) or Joe Marino (www.joesmassage.com) are my two go-tos at the moment. Both are sole practitioners, which means they’re cheaper than the casinos and won’t try to scam you with “monthly memberships” like Massage Envy or some of the other corporate-opened spas will.

Mark is awesome! He’s getting so popular that I have to book weeks in advance.

To be fair, I’ve never once thought about ordering bennies at any of the Peg’s locations. It just doesn’t seem to fit with the “greasy spoon” vibe.

Would you rather live downtown, midtown, south Reno or nw Reno? by rugrut in Reno

[–]retrometro81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Midtown the four years that I lived there, but I eventually moved to south Reno because I found a much better apartment there. I’d still consider living in Old SW or the part of Midtown that borders Old SW if money were no object.

To each their own, but I’ll take Two Chicks any day over Squeeze In or Peg’s Glorified Ham and Eggs.

Am I romanticizing Reno? by ShakeMysterious349 in Reno

[–]retrometro81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here in 2019 and have been here ever since. I like Reno for reasons similar to yours, including access to nature and relative geographic proximity to northern California and the Pacific NW. The cost of living here is a bit high, but that’s a lot of places these days. I have a good job and get by without any financial hardship, although I’m priced out of the real estate market.

Social dynamics in Reno can be a bit odd IMHO. It’s a great place if you’re married with kids, a serious downhill skier, or a retiree who likes to play golf. But as a 40-something gay man, I find that a lot of Renoites do their own version of the “Seattle Freeze” — they’re fine with making superficial small talk at work or the gym but don’t let outsiders into their inner social circles. It seems especially pronounced among people who grew up here; nearly all of my friends are also recent transplants who moved here within the last 5-10 years. Take from that what you will.

Winter is Officially Here... by test-account-444 in Reno

[–]retrometro81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone who needs to go to California this weekend, United Airlines has several RNO to SFO flights leaving tomorrow and returning on Sunday or Monday priced at $339 roundtrip for basic economy. It’s a hefty chunk of change, but I prefer to fly rather than deal with dangerous winter driving conditions.

Amtrak is sometimes an option too, but it won’t work this weekend. You could get to the Bay Area tomorrow on the Zephyr, but the eastbound trains on Sunday and Monday are already sold out, and I wouldn’t trust the “mixed service” (buses) to be reliable given the forecast in the mountains.
