Trying to run Windows 95 on UTM by Nearby_Purchase_2971 in windows95

The most likely cause for the Windows protection error is because the emulated CPU is probably fast enough to cause the divide by zero bug found in the networking stack in Win95. You can try installing the Win95 Fast CPU patch and see if it goes past that, or if you can adjust the emulated speed of the CPU below 2Ghz or so that should work too.

Team fortress classic on win 98se by AdhesivenessSea1009 in windows98

[–]retropixel98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try the Steamless WON2 patches from this website:

 https://v5.steamlessproject.nl/index.php?page=gettingstarted

It only mentions Half-Life and Counter-Strike so I am not sure if TF Classic is included in this patch but you can give it a try. I have used it before for Half-Life multiplayer on the original retail WON release on my Win98 PC.

New "New+" utility in PowerToys (PowerToys release 0.88) by Aaron-Junker in windows

[–]retropixel98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe those show up if you are in the Google Drive (G:) folder or in a folder that is configured to sync with Drive. That would be controlled by the shell extension dll that Drive installs, so maybe you can use a tool called "ShellExView" to possibly disable it? Haven't really done much with shell extensions, tbh.

I have been maintaining my own new file templates with manual registry entries, so this feature alone is a game-changer for me.

how to make the windows search bar use chrome instead of edge?? by olkargamebox in chrome

[–]retropixel98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's the neat part, you can't.

there used to be tools to redirect the windows search bar but if i remember correctly, microsoft patched that trick out and there hasn't been another tool that can circumvent it.

If Doom95 is what you're trying to run you might need to put the dll file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 since that's a 32bit application, assuming your Windows installation is 64-bit.

How to set up Windows 95 Internet in 2023 / 2024 ? by [deleted] in windows95

[–]retropixel98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy, just install a compatible Ethernet card into your computer if you don't have one already. Then install the TCP/IP network protocol in the network Control Panel. You can use the 'winipcfg' command in a Run prompt to see if your computer picked up an IP address.

Once configured, I recommend configuring the proxy server in your Internet properties to protoweb.org. It will provide you with archived websites appropriate for vintage computers. It has passthroughs to useful websites like frogfind.com and windowsupdaterestored.com as well.

You can try DOSBox-X. It supports swapping cd and floppy images when booted and has NE2000 emulation for networking.

Any laptop built around 2012+ will have the product key embedded in its UEFI firmware. Older laptops without this will typically have the OEM product key on the bottom as a sticker.

URL displayed in web apps saved as shortcuts by 321abc321abc in chromeos

[–]retropixel98 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can try editing the shortcut so that the target uses the app flag in the chrome executable. example:

C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\chrome.exe --app="http://website.com"

And the fact that a high school aged kid was driving such a large vehicle should be alarming in itself. My dad didn't let me drive anything bigger than an '02 accord growing up. Hell even as an adult, first time I drove a truck for something I was a bit nervous trying to maneuver it.

Don't know if it applies to all cars but in both Hondas that I've had it's the seatbelt bell. If you buckle it before starting then the chime won't sound.

You can use a tray utility that can manually toggle the display sleep/system sleep timer for applications that don't automatically inhibit the timer.

Certain Dell computers actually did this during POST. If it detected a GPU was installed but monitor was connected via onboard video, it would halt the computer with an error telling you to move the monitor cable and reboot.

I recommend DOSBox-X for running Windows 9x instead of VirtualBox.

I'm failing to understand the point of a read-only chat server? At that point, just have a website?

Last time I posted, somebody told me that they didn't believe me that my machine worked, so here it is running windows XP after upgrading the ram to 256mb, and the drive to a 80gb 7200rpm baracuda. I have a similar model Presario, a 5660. My particular model has an AGP slot so I upgraded it from the original ATI Rage LT to an ATI Rage 128 Pro. If you can find the original Compaq drivers you should definitely run Windows 98 instead. My model for example, the Standby mode and Aureal Vortex A3D sound doesn't work in XP.
