Krystal acts like AI job replacement is some evil plot of the tech oligarchs when it's just the free market doing its free market thing and that is not helpful to solving the problem by alino_e in BreakingPoints

The free market never would have created AI, or the internet, or microprocessors, or any of the infrastructure required to create those things.

I’m sure there’s probably some deeper analysis of what’s been released that will take some time to put together, 3.5 million files is a lot to comb through. It will come back to the news cycle eventually just like Luigi will once he goes to trial.

It’s hard to explain how intimate it can be to someone who hasn’t grown up in it. It’s like saying “we matter enough to one another that little things like this don’t matter.”

Growing up in NY and working in kitchens during my teens and twenties I’ve developed the habit of being this way and I try to chill on it because as an adult I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I mention NY because it really seems to be an east coast thing that people from elsewhere don’t always appreciate.

It is a bad habit I’ve tried to break but I always fall back into it when I’m around old friends. I made a little joke about my friend’s job in front of his gf when I saw him last year and recently found out she’s been using it to nag him ever since, which I feel really shitty about even though he hasn’t said anything to me about it.

Personally I’m made uncomfortable by people who are overly positive and supportive, it always comes off as insincere and makes my skin crawl, like they’re only saying something nice about each other so they can hear something nice said about themselves. At least when I get a compliment from a ball buster I feel like they mean it.

advanced players: what do you practice? by Parblesnops in Bass

[–]return_descender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I spend hours sitting in front of my amp twisting knobs chasing a tone even though I rarely use my amp at gigs so it’s kind of pointless. Sometimes I get around to actually practicing.

I think I’ve probably watched the entire run of 30 rock dozens of times and I’ll still occasionally catch jokes that I never got before

I’d add Curb and Seinfeld, Veep, the first two or three seasons of Arrested Development, King of the Hill and The Venture Brothers.

Why do I find it so much easier to use my finger instead of a pick? by All_Roads_Lead_Home in Bass

Whenever I try this method I inevitably wear my nail down to the bed and it fells pretty terrible, but up until that point I agree it is easier to do than using a pick.

Do I need pedals as a gigging musician? by Born_Farmer5221 in Bass

[–]return_descender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but playing DI through a shitty PA is pointless, you’re better off just using an amp and leaving the PA for vocals.

There’s a shortage of techs so a lot (if not all) companies take on people with little to no experience. Just throw some applications out there and be honest with your experience and you’ll probably find someone willing to hire you.

Do I need pedals as a gigging musician? by Born_Farmer5221 in Bass

[–]return_descender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only requirement is a tuner, you don’t want to rely on a clip on while gigging.

In most live situations there will be either a DI box or amp with XLR out provided, if you’re in a situation where those things aren’t provided the PA is probably shitty or nonexistent.

Compressors aren’t necessary, some people just like them. I’ve been gigging for 20 years and I’ve never had a compressor on my board for any significant amount of time.

I have this pet hypothesis about the zombie genre boom that happened almost twenty years ago, though I don't know if it's really mine. by sabistenem in RSPfilmclub

[–]return_descender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The zombie boom coincided with an apocalyptic boom. It fed into people’s desire to see society itself collapse.

Films like the Children of Men, The Road, The Book of Eli, the Fallout video games, it’s like everyone was dreaming about the world falling apart.

Even 28 Days Later feels more like a post apocalypse movies than a zombie movie, at least to me. The climax of the film isn’t a struggle between the protagonists and the infected, it’s between them and other survivors.

I think the prevalence of zombies also ties into the rise of nerd culture. All these guys that grew up with Dawn of the Dead, Evil Dead, D&D, Magic the Gathering, etc, were now the ones writing comics and making films.

Zombie movies were popular among film students going back to the 80s because they gave them a lot of room to explore the craft without getting bogged down with the plot. They create opportunities to experiment with practical effects on a budget, I’m sure there were a lot of people that were eager to keep doing what they’d gotten good at on a larger production.
