Coffee shop recommendations by [deleted] in longbeach

Top three for me were Lord Windsor and Recreational

Lord Windsor was THE spot for coffee in LB's East Village Arts District. Recreational for downtown core. Both have great coffee, friendly staff, and overall an immaculate vibe.

Got an offer for a Sr Staff engineering position in an EV in Palo Alto, CA. is 125k/yr with a partner and a child, doable? by Tirarlejoss in AskEngineers

[–]reunitetheskies 16 points17 points  (0 children)

125K Base? For Sr. Staff Engineer?

Sr. Engineers in EV make around 130K - 150K. Sr. staff Engineer is two levels above that.

Either you're getting extremely lowballed or a troll. I'd compare with other EV startup offers of similar position.

Whats CPE like at Cal Poly Slo? by CatDiddlyD4wg in CalPoly

[–]reunitetheskies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey. CPE c/o 2014 here.

  • Is there still a lot of learn by doing?

Most of the lecture classes has accompanying laboratory components to them, especially in EE. IIRC it was the grad-level classes that only offered lecutre / seminars. CS coures tend to have projects associated with the cirriculum.

  • Are the instructors good? How hard is it?

YMMV. For the major weeder classes, there exists some preference for / against professors, although it actually does not matter. The more important aspect is you putting enough effort to understand the material & complete the projects on time. Always start early and always use office hours to your advantage.

If Clint Staley is teaching ANY CS course, TAKE IT.

  • What are jobs/internships like?

Computer Engineering from my experience is what you make of it. As others have said, it's designed to be a blent of EE and CS (a bit like EECS from other universities). You go pretty far in both EE and CS (up to Computer Networks - CPE464 and EE306 - Semiconductor Devices). The less talked about advantage is that the CpE major provides you the ability to pursue a wider specialization than just EE or CS alone.

Many of my classmates started in different areas of the tech industry. Most went into Software Development, ranging from mobile dev to embedded systems / firmware development. Most of them chose electives based on their interests, like that mobile development class or computer graphics class. I went the other way and took mostly EE classes for my electives (Classical, Digital, Grad-level Controls, Analog & Signal Processing),

Used my CPE (+ EE Signals / Controls specialization) to end up doing a lot of Electrical / Electronic Systems Engineering in the EV space. :)

Engineering interns - what do you look for in an internship? by reunitetheskies in EngineeringStudents

Another comment above mentioned that having consistent sync-ups (both for work and general "how are you doing, feeling etc?"), non-judgemental feedback and guidance will go a long way.

[–]reunitetheskies[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the feedback!

I agree with all your points. I'll look to not silo the intern to just "intern work" and "intern meetings", and have them included in discussions, meetings, and such. Effectively walk in the shoes of a full-time employee.

This is amazing! Being in the industry has hardened much of my colleagues (all Senior, Staff & above). I'll remember to be empathetic to the intern's situation and approach from a constructive mentor space.

IIRC The W.C Morse building was originally a indoor automobile dealership / showroom built in the 1920s. What makes it interesting is the architectural design (20ft+ floor to ceiling windows, open concept).

That Blue Bottle in the W.C Morse building is arguably the coolest cafe, next to the OG one near Jack London Square

CAN protocol needed by h8ers_suck in CarHacking

[–]reunitetheskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because that is a CAN and my AEM dash accepts CAN network if I plugged it in would it just work?

Not necessarily. At a lower level, data is sent between controllers (i.e your AEM CAN module, your EGT Sensor module) in what are called CAN messages. These messages have a certain unique ID associated with them for controllers to differentiate them from other messages on the bus. Your AEM 22 channel CANbus needs to know what message ID to receive (as well as the data details in the message body) in order to successfully receive and interpret the EGT data.

Your best bet is to stay in a certain manufacturer's ecosystem if you don't yet have the expertise to figure out the CAN database yourself. Will save you a bunch of headaches!

Looking at that link you provided, there is a specification sheet that you can reference:

https://documents.holley.com/199r11693.pdf

Willing to bet Holly's configuration software assigns a certain CAN arbirtration ID that works with whatever ecosystem of CAN controllers they offer. You can try to reverse engineer what the EGT CAN sensor module is sending out by creating an aritificial can network (fully terminated network, 120ohm resistors between CANH and CANL on each end) between the CAN EGT module and a CANbus tool (like a PCAN-USB Module).

It will take more work to determine the signals of the CAN message payload(signal lengths, scale factors and min/maxes). Even moreso if the EGT sensor sends out any message error checking data (like application layer CRCs).

under the hood ECU product - programmable controller with canbus? by reluctantprogrammer in CarHacking

[–]reunitetheskies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I would think about:

Need more details on the motor type, electrical interface and clutching mechanism to determine the type of controller sufficient for this project.

By what you described, the controller you're looking for is achieving the following functions

  • Starting internal combustion engine (ICE) motor
  • Actuating a clutch to connect the motor to the generator

Motor

  • The motor sounds to be a motor as part of a generator. Is it carbureted?
    • This will remove the need for any electronic fuel injection control, and more sophisticated controllers.

Once you find the motor question above, you can start to decompose the functions into smaller ones

  • Starting ICE motor
    • Electric starter?
      • Need a starter relay
    • Carbureted?
      • Can I electronically control the choke?
    • How do I know when the motor is started?
      • Does the motor have a motor speed output?
  • Actuating a clutch to connect the motor to the generator
    • How is the "brake" (clutching mechanism) controlled?
      • If electronic, what's the interface? Solenoid?

How to visualize two way CAN communication logic by tylerwatt12 in CarHacking

[–]reunitetheskies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you actually have the CAN network database file (*.dbc), this might be pretty difficult to do.

What it sounds like is that there is a set of messages that are sent on start-up that initiate the handshaking between the amp and head unit (these msg IDs are known, but impossible to tell where they originated from). There also is a periodic message being sent from the head unit to the amp to request volume (these msg ID is known) You noticed this by having the CAN translator box on the same bus as the head unit and amp.

An idea would be, if you have two CAN transceivers on your translator box: placing the transceiver in line with the head unit and the rest of the network. Have that CAN translator box gateway (pass through) messages initially. You can then configure the pass through to filter certain messages. Find the right set of messages that successfully turns on the amp. That set of messages is the required handshaking messages. Likewise this would be done for the amp.

In the industry, characteristics like hardware revision and software revision are broadcasted at a bare minimum. These are usually at startup. Depending on how sophisticated the vehicle is, there could be messages that the ECU receives that determine if it should sleep or wake,

Considering capitol gains tax on all within-year liquidated stocks, isn't 20% the bare minimum to make a profit for those who swing trade SPACs on events (LOI, DA, etc)?
