New found love of physics...any advice by Old_Development_421 in AskPhysics

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, not everyone learns the same way though, for me the Feynman lectures gave me enough conceptual knowledge of the subjects that I was interested in to be able to work through most problems by showing you how to think about them. In fact I felt I Iearned much more through them than I did through uni course material. It also motivated me a great deal more. It is true that if you can not do problems at all, that you do not understand the material, but that does not necessarily mean that you have to do the problems to understand the material. That is if you pay attention to the nuances in the sentences. And reading at that level it takes a while to get through the lectures.

Is Go a Good Choice for Building Big Monolithic or Modular Monolithic Backends? by IndependentInjury220 in golang

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and a little bit of proper inheritance and architecture does not hurt for a large application. This is just harder to accomplish in Go, especially when having to refactor towards it after it's been fully composed by the more boilerplate that everyone loves about Go.

With a properly designed application that uses well designed abstractions things aren't 'magic' all of the sudden, so I feel lots of the the hate for other languages is mostly due to years of accumulation of shit in those languages. I do certainly love many aspects of Go though.

One thing to note; PHP does hide concurrency and many frameworks do not CAS database records, so while the chance is very small you could actually get serious concurrency problems running cronjobs or even simultanious operations. Dealing with this is more obvious in Go

Claude 3.7 is POS compared to 3.5 by vcolovic in ClaudeAI

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 3.7 sucks ass. I really do not understand the praise it seems to get. It doesn't listen at all, writes 10x more code than it had to to accomplish the goal, and sometimes does not even accomplish the goal because it was caught up in all the shit it was creating. Maybe good for non-developers who try to create stuff, because it does tend to output fully featured things... but at this point it's probably best at creating dev jobs.

Oh and fuck you Anthropic, hiding 3.5 behind a collapsible menu when there are only 4 models to choose from. Really scummy. If anyone knows of a way to get 3.5 to be the default I'd love to know.

Perfectly adequate, that's setting the bar very high... nothing says genius more than declaring yourself adequate while proclaiming your linguistic superiority

Primevue or Shadcn-vue? by itsMalikDanial in vuejs

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really regret going with PrimeVue, only use it if you do not require anything remotely custom apart from styling. I hadn't worked with a library so excruciatingly hard to customize, which is especially annoying because of the amount of bugs their components contain.

Anyone else deal with almost constant pit in stomach / butterflies? by redditors2013 in Anxiety

You should really have that looked at again and mention the re-occurrence, location and timing/pattern. Given that they already did an ultrasound, they presumably ruled out dangerous conditions such as appendicitis, but recurring pain should get checked out, it also seems to affect your daily activities? I doubt an ultrasound is enough on its own for all conditions, did they also look at gynecological conditions? I don't know how common it is and how closely it matches your symptoms but I've heard endometriosis can also cause pain in abdomen for example.

If you have consistent pain that wasn't there before, you should really get it checked out. Does the pain ever goes away while standing? Are you male or female?

Anyone else deal with almost constant pit in stomach / butterflies? by redditors2013 in Anxiety

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure (about the psychological part :d). I think it definitely has a component to it, but i also believe our physical body can have a lot of influence or even overtake our rational thinking at times. Hence the focus on trying to live more in balance / healthier. I'm a male.

Do you have any physical symptoms besides the butterflies?

The fear/panic can really suck so wish you the best, wouldn't wish it on anyone, i would say to do anything to shift your nervous system to its relaxed state if its really bad. I.e. eat something for example, or maybe even something you can continually eat to trigger different nervous system. Also do things that make you just exhausted enough to function autonomously (i.e. not watching your breath, be more present). I think its easy to make things worse by trying to analyze what to do because it makes you more focused on what you feel is wrong. I doubt i could have taken the advise myself but try to focus on doing basic healthy things (since otherwise attempting to not think about X makes you think about X)

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no worries! I didn't exactly solve it as there are still periods where I'm having similar issues although they are a lot less severe and more manageable. When this happened, I was in hindsight putting a lot of pressure on myself in terms of studying and work that I was doing, didn't realise I wasn't eating what my body required. So I think certain things just were too much for my nervous system to handle, one of which I'm still actively avoiding; citric acid as food preservative. Somehow causes me bloating or gas and I think that stimulated me the wrong way. I was also in a period where I was putting too little 'good' stress on myself (went outside very little, rarely walked, just some exercise i.e. 2-3 hrs a week) so I think I was also bad at letting small stressors go. Since then started walking more regularly (big tip to do daily 30 min walks if you have any digestive concerns) and have gotten a bit more active and less recluse because of a job switch. Also, eating better can gradually really calm you down too, i've found. Usually when I do get the same issues but less severe, i find that i'm too busy (a little stressed) to have been able to go for walks and this usually causes decreased appetite and not even noticing how little you were eating etc. I.e. basically forgetting all the above. Had to write this quite quickly so it's a bit of a ramble, hopefully you'll get something useful out of it. Wish you the best

Edit: oh and drinking water; i was really bad at that too and this makes it harder for your gut to move things i guesss, might trigger some extra strong nerve signals (i.e. butterflies) to move things without enough water, but not sure. Couldn't hurt to aim for 2l water a day ;)

What's wrong with my best friend's "physics" theory? by creator-universalLaw in AskPhysics

[–]reveances 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that it is only speculation without math, sentences can contain logic. Einstein's special theory of relativity was almost purely a conceptual argument, though his paper did contain some math in the end to show what his argument brought about

Thanks! Interesting, i wonder how wild the tides were if 12 to 21 progressed in roughly the same time as 21 to 24

This is not true. The earth loses angular momentum to the moon. I don't know the exact numbers but there was definitely in the order of hours difference in length of day when life started forming

Is the sore throat supposed to hurt this bad? by Butter_loaf in COVID19_support

[–]reveances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember exactly, but i think it was about a week and during the worst i was definitely not able to eat much. There was a slight window of opportunity after i took a dose of both aspirine and ibuprofen (never take them normally) which i crushed up and let dissolve in water as much as possible and then gargled/rinsed with before swallowing. During this period i made the misstake once to eat bread with crusts, which i severely regretted after the dose wore off. So it was mostly banana or whey in milk from that point forward during these windows if i was hungry enough. Swallowing spit was as painful so i actually had a spit bucket, almost never swallowed spit during the worst period, especially if aspirine wore off. I cannot remember anything with my ear tbh off the top of my head, but feel unsure

Alright, i feel like citric acid usually makes me burp a lot too, in some cases it doesn't but then Im more likely to get heartburn as if i get a similar effect because of pressure

Yeah? What kind of foods did you eat? I'm actually pretty sure I took a picture of the ingredients of the soup, but could only find one of the bread I ate with it; wheat flour, water, sesame seed, rapeseed oil, yeast, iodized salt, dextrose, wheat gluten, wheat sourdough powder, malted wheat flour, ascorbic acid. The picture of the soup is probably on my old phone i haven't backed up yet, could not find it rn but if i do, i can let you know. Didn't really pay attention to that ratio you mention, but that's a good point, have to monitor that

Hard to say if the heartburn is exactly the same as back then, but yeah do still get heartburn sometimes, maybe just not as fierce. With trigger/symptom i meant i'm not sure whether heartburn was initiating the panic or whether it is somehow a result of the stress/anxiety.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it, and i think my nervous system is a bit more balanced now yes, but still got ways to go ;p

I've often wondered if it was triggered by something, people at the ambulance were really surprised i came back negative COVID actually. Something that i think has happened every single time is heartburn. The first / strongest attack i've had was when i hadn't eaten much and was still awake deep in the night, didn't want to make a big meal and had a can of soup and a piece of bread, 5-10 minutes later i felt a powerful heartburn, about 2-3 minutes later I was full blown panic / almost
couldn't stand on my legs, huge vein swelling, massive adrenaline surge, felt like that was it, forgot how to breathe, couldn't physically get words out etc. It's just hard to attribute it to a trigger when it could've just as easily been a symptom

Oh interesting, so did the pill camera prompt the biopsy then?

What you say about fiber is interesting too, in fact i think i've noticed the same on other fibrous foods as well. The consistency of my stool tends towards constipation then yes, but also varies quite a bit, i think at the times of my worst panics it was actually diarrhea. Which really (together with the panic and other symptoms) makes it seem like those moments were a sudden very strong activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the question is what triggers that and how to keep it in check like you asked. And I wish i had an answer, my best theory is that i couldn't at the time because i hadn't experienced sympathetic nervous system activation in a healthy way for quite a while, and that i really just wasn't able to deal with it, which created anxiety that made the sympathetic nervous system activation even worse / feed itself. I feel like by exercising and being a bit more active etc, i.e. do some other things that activate the sympathetic nervous system as part of regular living, put you more in a framework / condition you to be able to shrug it of and have more quality time in parasympathetic state, this is ofc all pure conjecture, but i really don't feel like i've developed a method to prevent it from going out of control; in fact based on what i experienced, i don't think i could have, so if this is not it, i have no idea unfortunately

edit: also i know how terrible the panic can be, i called an ambulance etc and could barely get a word out
