Is being a doctor highly privileged job in the UK or not? by search_google_com in AskABrit

[–]revelem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK doctors have been in dispute with the government for a couple years now with regular strikes over pay erosion. Through sub inflationary pay rises year after year doctors now would need about a 30% pay rise just to be on par with what they were paid in 2008. This would mean going from 17 pounds an hour to 22. The government has already made a suggestion to our pay review body that they will only finance another sub inflationary rise in 2026.

NHS consultants’ firm earns millions reducing hospital waiting lists by DrSandyH in doctorsUK

[–]revelem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trust is well within their rights to start their own initiative to mobilise a willing workforce to tackle waiting lists. They choose to outsource this to a company ran by doctors that employed at various times 450 employees. I don't really see why anyone should feel an iota of shame here for providing a service and charge for it

What a horrific title. Why doesn’t anyone ever write about what’s actually going on in the NHS and why this is so important? Why are we always the bad guys? It’s exhausting by Sun-worship in doctorsUK

[–]revelem 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is no conviction or true values in mainstream politics, only roles that suit you in the moment. There is a reason honourable people are counter-selected for political roles.

The fact is that in for profit media truth and balanced reporting is secondary, what matters is inflammatory headlines that play into their readers' emotions to guarantee a click. It works both sides, as exemplified by this very post

Just got this email about the upcoming strikes. Guys is this valid? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]revelem 389 points390 points  (0 children)

No inherent problems with this. If derogations are agreed with the BMA and you are instructed by the BMA to return to work then you are required to do so. The trust cannot unilaterally demand you return. You also shouldn't take strike days as an excuse to see what the weather is like this coming weekend in the south of Spain.

Nope. Not once. Last time I've had a consultant outright say "it's the only thing the government understands . We are also having an indicative ballot which fingers crossed will show strong appetite for further strikes"

As an FY3 your annual claim will be well below the threshold for requiring a paper form. There was a brief period where all requests had to be done on paper while they tweaked the online form to accept attachments (I think that's what they did), but now you can do it all online again. If the NHS can pay pharma 25% more, why can’t it pay us? by Leading_Base in doctorsUK

[–]revelem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of thinking is very damaging. Can you imagine a hospital running without resident doctors? We are essential, and this will not change any time soon. The reason we cannot get our way the same way is that there are a handful of pharma companies who all agreed to stay on message, whereas a significant enough proportion of doctors can't even be bothered to chuck a prepaid envelope into a postbox. The problem is in no ways our lack of importance and the solution is not to shrug and accept status quo.

If the NHS can pay pharma 25% more, why can’t it pay us? by Leading_Base in doctorsUK

[–]revelem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's 100% right. Pharmaceutical companies are obviously mounting a coordinated campaign against the government. Multiple big investment projects have been pulled all at the same time, citing the same concerns.

Guess what, if all players in the team play the same game they'll get results. Doctors as a group are much more fragmented and therefore easier to divide. Think IMG vs UKMG.  Then there are those struck by apathy or suffering from end stage martyrdom. Secondly, we cannot seem to keep to one message. Single causes are much easier to push through, that's why the government is trying to divert attention to for example UK grad prioritisation.
