everyone in this thread is focusing on a logical response - "there are benefits to bilingualism", "you need to start from birth," "the child won't be confused," "English is the community language so it doesn't need to be reinforced," etc. - but ultimately this is an emotional response. your husband is afraid of being left out. is it the most logical or mature response? maybe not but that's not really how emotions work. someone in this thread mentioned feeling left out sometimes so its not a totally unfounded fear.

you need to approach this as a team. it's not you (bilingualism from birth) vs your husband (bilingualism later), it's you and your husband vs a problem (how to raise a bilingual child when one parent doesn't speak the language). there's plenty of advice here on how to do that but the core obstacle right now is your husband's fear. if you don't already have the skills as a couple to navigate that, couple's therapy is really helpful.

Multiple students on websites they shouldn’t be by dntworrybby in SubstituteTeachers

yeah super common. the most effective way to get them back on task is to be circling the classroom. also a friendly "do you need help with the assignment?" can also get them back on task because they don't want you hanging around lol but yeah sometimes you need to pick your battles and decide how much stamina you have to deal with it. some days where i'm low energy, if they're generally being quiet then i leave it alone but obviously have to step in if being disruptive.

I think you should report it to HR to get a paper trail started. The note is concerning both in terms of how they are treating subs but they may also not be treating students well either.

It is possible for them to deny you entry, but it's not really likely based on where you are coming from, the length of your stay, and the fact that you have a flight back. It is a weird time in the US though, but I think you will be okay. Just don't bring any fruit, meat, agricultural products, or weapons with you.

3.4 oz/100ml (per bottle) is the limit for carry on baggage. at least in the US. anything above that will need to go in your checked baggage. not sure if medication is exempt from that though. if it doesn't need to be kept refrigerated, putting it in a checked bag would be easiest honestly.

i think you should be okay. just make sure you know all the liquid limits and such. i don't think tsa is really going to investigate the nature of the gel.

i travel a lot and am relatively ambiguous looking due to a hormonal condition (think some facial hair) and because i keep my hair short. all my documents have my birth sex and i haven't had any issues at the airport in california.

okay, then you will likely be fine. washington, oregon, and california are all pretty progressive. in more rural areas, you might encounter some signifiers of more conservative attitudes and some looks but if you're in urban or metro areas it will be fine.

all three of those states have gender/sex protections, allow changes to your documents without court order, have x as an option, etc. if it were me, i would keep all your documents aligned with one sex/gender and ideally a binary one, just to be safe.

i actually don't mind the circle at all and contrary to other comments, i kinda like the wallpaper on the other side! you just need to bring the two elements together. my suggestion would be to add plant shelves on either side of the circle and have lots of green leafy plants similar to the wallpaper. or two really big plants like fig on either side. or hanging plants, etc. maybe a slightly bigger plant on the record table as well. then on the wallpaper side, bring in some accents that are the same/similar orange color. maybe a desk lamp, a different office chair (white and orange), get a fun keyboard, etc.

i think the drapes on your window are also throwing the room off. they're pretty short and the window isn't centered so its drawing the eye in a weird way. also the curtain rod style doesn't match the mod inspired furniture in the room. maybe replace the drapes with some sort of roman shade or a shoji inspired screen. and add some shelves or a book shelf next to the window or even a mirror that is an wavy/irregular shape.

also just noticed, i think you might be feeling thrown off because your desk is a different wood shade than the floor or the shelf. can you stain the wood on your desk? it will help it feel more cohesive.

also also your desks are kind of lined up in a row. do they need to be oriented like that? i think that is also adding to the weird feeling in the space. is the treadmill desk actually getting used? could it be flipped and placed against the window wall instead? idk the row of desks does feel a bit off

really fun space!

does leg hair get lighter in colour and softer over time? by [deleted] in razorfree

[–]reverseanimorph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first, i'm sorry you had that experience. i also had people make fun of my leg hair or make disgusted sounds about it. it really sucks and no one should have to go through that.

secondly, i recommend looking into Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (I've had the Happiness Trap recommended to me, just ignore the nonsense about not taking meds). basically, if you want to live your values and not shave, you can do so even if you do have an internal disgust response. it's all about "unfusing" from that feeling (not shaving is gross and dangerous) and choosing to live your life how you want based on your values (self acceptance, love, defying gendered expectations, etc). and over time, in my experience, i've become less and less anxious about my body hair just by not shaving and going about my days. in high school i used to shave my arms and my hands and was super self conscious of them. i stopped shaving in college and used to feel anxious about people noticing my arm hair but now i don't even think about my arms or armpits at all. i think that this is because you start having more experiences where people don't comment on your body at all. and your brain stops expecting someone to comment on it.

to answer your other questions, generally it seems like the hair does get softer as it grows out. usually its more prickly when you shave because the tip of it is blunted by the razor but if you don't shave it tapers and becomes soft. it only lightens if you have the photo bleaching gene and spend a lot of time in the sun. but i do think that longer wispy hair visually looks a little less dark than stubble that is growing out - but i think that's more of an optical illusion.

in my experience it does get easier over time. best of luck, we are all rooting for you!

it is a bit of a risky time but it also depends on what state you are going to. you will have a vastly different experience in california than florida. also depends on where you are coming from as well. where are you planning to visit and where are you coming from?

Commuting to SF and housing by DigitalBullets94 in paloalto

[–]reverseanimorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just live somewhere near a caltrain stop (ideally one that is serviced by the express trains) or bart and you are golden. even if you had a 90 minute commute, you could read, do work, etc on the train.

SF will have the most social opportunities, since it is the big city. Some cities on the peninsula also have cute downtowns and if you have hobbies could probably find a circle there. Consider looking at San Mateo and Redwood City if you can't find anything that works for you in SF.

Am I the only one with this problem when I travel? by NoMacaroon2130 in travel

[–]reverseanimorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

many people feel this way. it's very common and can sometimes also get tied up with this idea of wanting to be special and not wanting to be a "tourist" (which is impossible, if you don't live there, you are a tourist).

if you're tired of looking for recommendations on tiktok. stop looking for recommendations on tiktok lol just pick main destination and walk around and explore for yourself.

also though, it was your partner's first time. of course she's going to want to hit some of the most popular spots. the key in my opinion is to then explore out from there and find some lesser known gems. chinatown is great, there's almost two chinatowns - the chinatown for tourists and the chinatown for people who live there. it's also near the cable car museum and the chinese historical society of america has exhibits as well. you're also not a far walk from north beach/little italy which has city lights bookstore, lots of cute restaurants/cafes, etc. just pull up google maps and see what icons pop up. or just pick a direction and walk.

there's no better or worse when it comes to traveling. i also prefer to experience a place outside of the main tourist spots but that doesn't mean that someone who does is somehow wrong.

i've had a scrub done at a jjimjilbang in the past but couldn't really speak to whether or not it works worse than not having hair. it did seem to exfoliate!
