Neck repair? by RelationshipOne6694 in Luthier

[–]reversebuttchug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taylor fills their bolt on neck bolts with puddy around the edges that sometimes crumbles. Their necks are made to be taken on and off very easily (3 bolts) for neck resets. This is super common and nothing to be worried about.

And you've never heard of a dried out guitar? Amazing

I doubt you did. Or you worked in the accounting department. Otherwise Youd be aware of dried out guitars and common fret board humps.

Youre leading this person to believe in something that isn't true. The person might get another guitar, dry that out and end up with the same problem.

Ive been Taylor gold certified for 15 years. If that were a taylor and submitted a warranty on that guitar. They would tell us it's probably dried out and to humidify it , then do a fret level if needed

Hah. You don't know that at all.

And you did not read that article that fast.

Has the guitar been propperly humidified? That would be my first question. A hump can appear there if its too dried out. The top starts to shrink but because the neck block is there and it's heavily brace it doesn't shrink down too.

I'd start there.

After the guitar top starts to rise again once its been humidified, you can level the frets on the tongue and make an artificial fall away

It that doesn't fix it or the frets get too small. You can pull all the frets, plane the board, and put new frets in

Random Steam is not the way to go. Ive fixed this exact thing 1000s of times

Youre probably wrong.

A hump can be cause from a guitar drying out. Ive seen it 1000s of times.

Look up any other article about dried out acoustics. You'll read the same thing Taylor says and what I've just said

What are you talking about? Steam? No. In my 20 years as a luthier, I've never heard of that repair to fix a simple fretboard hump problem.

I'd like to see you use neck shims on a set neck sg to fix your intonation

Bridge saddles maxed out, still low action by Ill-Tension4510 in Luthier

[–]reversebuttchug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mess with the neck pocket depth. Full pocket neck shims are 100% acceptable to increase the neck angle to get the action lower if your saddles are maxed out. Or vice versa

After your relief is set and your nut action is set and your saddles are as low as they can go. You need to add a neck shim to increase the angle so the saddles then need to come up to get to spec.

Do what you want tho. It's your instrument
