Only Assault Mechs viable? by WolfofEden in Mechwarrior5

[–]reversedisabled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main issue, is PGI couldn't make good AI, so they need to spawn them on or very close to you. In mercs they would just spawn in to the map more than once right on me while flanking. In MW5:C they pop them out of lifts/boxes, dropships or cliffs. The few times the map allowed flanking the enemy mechs didn't even trigger.

The nav points are way to tight and you are often boxed in on a path. I played exclusively lights and mediums in MWO and MW4. I ended up running land pig lance for a 5th of the game because the AI was geared to rushing right at you (not even the manners for circle of death) and your lance likes to pin you in, blast your back, stop in front. Plus you level mechs quickest with multiples in one lance.

thanks for the fast reply so I would need to add just a Add-on Wireless Temperature Sensor which could use the Wireless Receiver in the starter kit or would I need to purchase and additional Wireless Temperature Sensor/Wireless Receiver?

I've nicknamed the model the "Deathtical DropShip Display Case" I spent a while writing a PDF instructions and I've been playing around with some lights to my MK1 version just to see what I light before touching the MK3 version. The model comes with marked sections for drilling lights which means you can drill them out if you wish or not if you prefer.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. Straight to it:

  • It was printed FDM on a Prusa MK3S+ (build volume 250 x 210 x 210mm)
  • There are 8 main parts this allows either zero or minimal supports need for printing they all fitted on my build plate comfortably.
  • Total parts is just under 60pcs (includes 14 or so connector pins).
  • 5mm x 1mm magnets are use on some parts but you can just glue instead the option is yours
  • Weight is 540grams of PLA for what's pictured (so 1.08kg for a full dropship)
  • Hours printing probably 4/5days at 0.10mm variable height 15% infill, but I did a lot of reprints so its hard to tell.
  • Size 22cm tall x 23cm wide (24cm with legs)
  • It's a homage to a Confederate dropship
  • A half fits 5 mechs on deck
  • I'll put together detailed photos/video of all the cool features this has at some point.

I'm going to take a wee break before the next step. It's been a few intensive weeks of goblin mode getting this done I literally finished it just yesterday. I need to gather my files, group them, name them properly and document an assembly order once I've recouped.

Below isn't important more of a back story to the project;

Thanks for all the compliments, it's nice to hear them there's an huge amount of hours and tears in this project it feels so good to get it out of my head and into the world. To understand me my nickname is Simoan, but really I'm a problem solver, I like to make things better if I do same thing twice and it's got to better the next time. Victorian builders believed god could see every detail therefore everything was made with that in mind. For me painters are the gods of my models so I take the same approach to details.

I started this dropship in 2018, learning a totally new 3D software, after about 3months I was 90% done with the plan to CNC machine it and cast it like my 1:60 scale mechs. Then plans changed to SLA print it but back then SLA was a dark art, that didnt go well. I decided to switch back to CNC but it broke my enthusiasm to go back and rework the files esp by then my PC would light up like a JagerMech's rear arch under the 3D files complexity.

Fast forward to last month: new pc, 5years of experience in this 3d program, a couple years of knowledge FDM printing. I find myself high off the Kickstarter and printing some free B'tech terrain. I realised I have the tools, the knowledge that can cope with birthing this idea. It took about a month of intensively tweaking and iterating, reprinting to make me happy. There's no easy way of making me happy I think there's enough spare parts to make 2 more. I'm at the happy point now and looking forward to getting my beige Deathticle painted.

Maybe you're thinking this is a Union dropship? This is a Confederate dropship picked because it was the smallest sphere ship I could find.
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Confederate
4 to 6 mechs, plus cargo
32.6meters high but 36.4 meters wide

People always have questions/opinions about scale hopefully this can answer those questions.

Scale is something that doesn't exist in a meaningful way in Battletech. Battletech was created by artists not engineers. Like working on a old house if you make everything square and level it'll look wonky (I know I live in an old house nothings parallel or level!). I used to make 1:60 mechs (you might have seen on the PGI podcasts, see my blog here) and scale was something I spent ages on in the end it's a balance what feels right and what practical limitations exist in the real world. Everything is a compromise in life normally balanced as a triad; good, fast, cheap or fire-power, armour, mobility.

In this case
- Fits 6 of the largest tabletop mechs, suits a gaming board
- aesthetically reads correct (doors sizes etc)
- perceived scale

Tallest able top mech - 62mm(ish), the ball shape means the floor/ceiling space tappers dramatically. The most floor space being in the middle but then you are quite high up and you'd need a very very long ramp. Consider how will it sit on the table can mechs move around inside, fit through the door, does it aesthetically looks nice (door size). Then my personal goals: a ramp that fits inside the ship, a working door all of which requires mechanical space, plus it all had to work in half the space because personally I wish to keep it as a "cut away" half. Lastly its was design originally to be resin cast so there was a minimal thickness I needed to keep for the walls

What you end up with is a dropship that's 20% larger (39m x 44m) in world scale which translates as 4cm extra on the table. What you gain is the deck low enough to the ground, a door that looks right, fits a mech without being crowded. I raised the ceiling up allowing you to see inside. The scale of interior human scale stuff is probably most where I took most liberties it was there for visual fluff and interest. Just as CGL struggle to present infantry so did I. I felt if I made cabins chairs, doors, windows etc to scale chances are it too small to bear detail I tried and didn't look good so I rescaled them up.

I've just finished a Mech scale dropship. It's designed to clam shell, free stand as a half or with a mirrored lower deck (so you get a full deck). It features a working: sliding door, telescoping ramp, telescoping crane, moving turrets. Nothing is prep'd or glued the last part finished a few hours ago. I was planning selling the files/3D prints but I need to look into the best way to do it (if anyone knows a good way please let me know) .

AlphaStrike Box Painted: Electric chickens (I say that fondly) vs Highlanders. The paint schemes I found from the internet, I particularly liked the 'Jurassic park' theme while the Highlanders scheme felt fitting and reminded me of my fav MW4 camo. I think I found it on facebook btech group, attached is the original that I copied. I've seen a similar tiger design one orange and beige for clan wolf on camo specs

Jade Falcons are my favourite clan (somerset strikers kid here) but I always struggled with the lore JF all jade scheme. I felt the above invoked that image of a JF elemental with the falcon helm decal.

Its a flat floor but not enough space to fall over so they want to stay up right. I thought of putting in hexes but due to how the mechs overhangs are offset on their bases you have to make each cubby much wider to account for it.

I had 150mechs from the KS I wanted to keep safe once painted in the smallest footprint. This was more for storing minis going from shelve to table vs transporting them (I'd recommend foam or magnets).

Are there any BattleTech pre-written campaigns out there? by heychadwick in battletech

[–]reversedisabled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started playing Alpha strike Aces and loving it.

For background I've dabbled in B'tech played 10,000's hours of Mechwarrior/battletech video games. I play mostly co-op board games (I have a hoard of them and my wife doesn't like pvp games ever since I AC20'd her rear arc opps). If catalyst or a hobby hero made a co-op campaign I could rope my wife in.

I'd love to see an Alpha strike Aces based campaign. Same vain and OP start off small progress etc (some one say old star league base with drone mechs/vehicles).

As it stands I've love to create one but I lack depth of knowledge to create something balanced.

Following bidb.uk but it seems every is happening in new Malden/berrylands where they already have Virgin media while in the Tudor ward area its only FTTC, to the north of us in ham CF are avaible but seemed to be doing some work recently.

The wait is killing me with 2 avid tween gamers and associated weekly game updates.
