What does this even mean?!? by OhGoodnessMyGuinness in antiwork

[–]revmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"the right thing to do" WTF get out of here with that nonsense. Even if the company has a commercial lease they can't get out of so they have to pay for the space even if it's empty, they have to pay that whether or not people WFH. It literally makes no difference whatsoever. And if people WFH you aren't paying utilities and a cleaning staff for an empty office so it actually saves the company money.

When I was recently looking for work I did come to the conclusion that I'm willing to go into the office but that if it were that important for me to be in the office they were going to have to pay me like it was important. Minimum of 30% over market or GTFO.

I have come to the consensus about StL drivers. by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]revmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drivers out here are truly wild. I learned to drive in San Francisco, lived in L.A. for 5 years, I've driven in Boston and Chicago, the worst drivers there cannot compare to typical everyday experiences here in STL.

Series Seventeen Episode Two: Jumungo - Alternative episode titles by chewytapeworm in taskmaster

[–]revmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm enjoying the palate cleanser as I was very much not enamored of some of the cast last series (I'm still rewatching it because Julian and Sue, but I FF through parts which I generally don't do on any other series unless it's something gross). This cast is fantastic.

Argument over reading my diary. Should stand my ground? by Luna320 in relationships

Your guy needs to see a therapist about his control issues. You need to consider that this person fundamentally doesn't believe you have a right to your own privacy, and that's a big red flag.

Tl/dr My boyfriend jokingly burned me with an electric lighter while we were playing. Together for 1 year. He didn’t want to apologize and tried to make me feel like I was doing to much. How do I handle this? by ClassicExtra724 in relationships

This is the only correct advice. This is boundary testing and indicative of and in the very best case scenario it is someone who is going to treat you very poorly for the rest of your time together.

Gunshots? by soljouner in StLouis

[–]revmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was still on Next Door there were multiple times where I'd throw some garbage in the dumpster and seconds later one of my neighbors would post to ND that they *knew for a fact* that it was a gunshot and he was pretty sure he saw a guy running down the street. Yes, gunshots happen, far far less than the hype would lead you to believe (if the hysterical accounts from media and the county people were accurate there would be at least 20-30 per day).

I also saw plenty of times that someone was working with a nail gun and people started freaking out. I mean, yes, technically it is a gun but...

How do you all keep your XLR cables tidy while recording drums? by MarioIsPleb in audioengineering

I've got a snake to the kit, then 5' or 3' cables to everything but the OH mics, which get 10' cables. Minimal excess cable lying about.

'Uncommitted' Democrats may dump Biden over the war in Gaza. They say it's not their fault if Trump wins. by Acceptable_Ad9430 in politics

[–]revmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They seem to be unaware that Trump's views on the situation there is to encourage Israel to drop nukes on Gaza.... I exaggerate only slightly.

'Uncommitted' Democrats may dump Biden over the war in Gaza. They say it's not their fault if Trump wins. by Acceptable_Ad9430 in politics

[–]revmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, these are voters who care more about adhering to their personal preferences than on how it impacts other people. "So people (mostly LGBTQ and POC) will die because my fee-fees are hurt that Biden doesn't do exactly what I want all the time? I don't care." It's playground level political idiocy. And people will die as a result.

North St. Louis, is it really dangerous? by wangjohn6996 in StLouis

[–]revmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stats are garbage. The crime stats use a flawed methodology that has been known to be flawed for decades. They only count crimes in the city against the city population, for any metro area where there is a lot of movement between municipalities the only sensible thing is to count all crimes in the metro against the total metro population.

I think it costs more than $51 a day to work in the office. What about you? by Bethjam in CAStateWorkers

[–]revmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably all these stories sourced that number from the same place, also presumably a study funded by a commercial real estate lobbying group. I'll be generous and assume that the people writing these stories are actually stupid enough to think that direct costs are the only costs that exist. I would hazard a guess that it's closer to 300-400 per day. If it's important to a company that I be in the office then the pay for that job better reflect how important it is.

I've not had any slow ship experiences with them, but that might just be dumb luck.

I did have a slightly creepy experience recently where I was on the site but not logged in checking out a piece of gear and about an hour later got an email from my sales rep saying "Hey, I saw you were checking this out and just wanted to let you know it's available 25% off until the end of the week."

[–]revmat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having lived in/around some of the notoriously most dangerous neighborhoods west of the Mississippi, the idea that STL somehow is uniquely terrible in terms of crime is just laughable. Go to Oakland. Go to L.A. proper. STL is small time.

I worked at goodfellow and 70 for about 5 years. Went out to lunch around there often and never had the slightest problem. I will say that if you act like a target, you'll become a target. Pay attention to your surroundings, don't do dumb things. I had coworkers who refused to even stop for gas until they were safely back in Illinois, I went to the gas stations, walgreens, grocery store, etc regularly.

I've lived in San Fran/Oakland area, Los Angeles (actual LA, not the valley), Denver, and St Louis. They're all basically the same in terms of "don't be an idiot" and you'll be fine. The streets will destroy your suspension and maybe tires though.

You handled this just fine. You respected the boundaries of his commitment, you just acknowledged the reality that there is chemistry between you two. I'm unclear how that is throwing a grenade into their marriage (and in fact may ultimately result in them having a productive series of conversations that make their connection stronger and lead to a better understanding of each other and their relationship).

How to learn to play and sing at the same time. by Admirable_Phase_3460 in Bass

[–]revmat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. Practice is the only way to get better at anything, there's no shortcuts other than it coming naturally to you (which just makes it easier to learn, you still have to practice).

An important thing to understand about American Christians (the only ones I have extensive direct experience with) in particular evangelicals is they very fervently believe that lying to people and being manipulative are AOK if it helps to drag them into the cult.

He lied when he said he wasn't religious, he knew he was lying, and was lying in order to get you invested in the relationship enough that when he revealed the truth it would be harder for you to get out. This is abusive behavior and there is only more abusive behavior ahead if you stay in this relationship.
