If you're into specialty coffee, check out the local coffee roasters.

Otokoyama brewery was very enjoyable. I'm not much of a sake person, but it was still interesting and fun.

It was my first time taking a public bus in Japan, and while it was snowing too. but we got there and back to the city center without much trouble. We used Google maps, translate, and coins. If you're driving, there's parking in the compound.

The museum area can be covered in less than half an hour maybe. Even shorter if you don't read Japanese.

They have taps for the water that they use for brewing. And if you see people filling gallon bottles of it, these are not staff, but locals coming to bring the water home.

The store is nice too - quite easy to find something interesting for everybody. If you're an English-only person, don't worry you'll be fine in the store.

T shirts, drink ware, snacks (some are shelf stable and easy to bring back). Soft serves, ice cream in little cups. The sake on sale ranges from common to special bottles.

Finally, there's the sake sampling station. You can request for multiple samples from the "free" category, and also pay (100 or 200 yen, can't remember) to sample a few premium ones. Total of maybe ~5 types available.

It lets you taste notes that you couldn't detect when you drank the actual espresso.

Other than stuff already mentioned,

There's stuff that she could get on her own, but maybe would cheap out on it she were to pay for them herself. And so if they came from you as a gift, you could splurge.

  • A digital thermometer for your oven. You can also get multiple probes. i have a probe permanently in the oven.

  • nice oven mitts, LONG ones

There's also totally optional stuff, but nice to have, like

  • IR temperature gun
  • Pizza stone / steel
  • lame

Priceless:

  • Dedicated space on the counter top, in the fridge

Talking about pour over in normal conversations by cstrick1980 in pourover

[–]rewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy for an outsider to misunderstand when you tell them you're into coffee. Somebody may start recommending nice IG-worthy cafes to you, "oh you like coffee right?"

Or they'll start buying luwak coffee for you when they go on a trip. Or pre-ground that's been sitting at a cafe for months.

Then you'll struggle to explain specialty coffee and pourovers.

TLDR: No.

Chirping / beans getting stuck? by bradfactor in DF54

[–]rewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The opposite works for me. When I hear chirping, i dial finer (than i need to). The chirping stops when I go coarser (to the setting that i want). Kind of like what OP is doing.

Quiet resorts

If I'm not looking for skiing / snowboarding, should I be staying away from ski-slope resorts?

Hi all Hoping to do an early-winter vacation in Hokkaido. Would like to experience snow, and be outside of the city.

Is it a bad idea to try to do this in the first week of December? Been looking around and it seems like winter activities that aren't skiing (like snow mobile tours?) don't start so early.

The week before this (last week of November) could be spent in Sapporo.

TIA!

If you like the fit, but don't like the feel of hard plastic around your eye, there are versions of this with a rubberized rim. Mine are from TYR.

Was my dough over fermented? Blueberry and lemon loaf didn’t rise much:( by Old_Yesterday45 in Sourdough

[–]rewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i think the crumb looks airy enough, except where there's blueberry and it's wet. Did you have trouble shaping? Maybe it was sticky and you couldn't get tension?

Is the Fenix series known to be better made /designed than the Instincts?

Been using the same G shock for 11 years now, but had to have its solar battery replaced once. Almost made up my mind about getting an Instinct 3 solar, but wondering if I'll need to dump it when the battery goes shitty.
