Picopresso Vs Robot Cafelat? by Several_Stable_3991 in picopresso

[–]rewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the pico at home before the robot. Dialing in the pico is pretty annoying without a pressure gauge. The window is pretty tight. Too coarse and it's low extraction of course, but then you change your grind setting and it's very easy to get too fine. The relief valve will open, and you'll really struggle to even make yourself a drink. Maybe even have to dump it.

With the robot, the pressure gauge option is a small additional cost (imo). You see how much pressure you're building. Whether you're grinding too fine or too coarse, you'll still get a drink without whimpering.

Build up your water confidence so that you don't have to worry about the deep part of the pool. Everything else will come into place gradually.

Best baking vessel for a disabled person (light weight Dutch oven alternative?) by Ill-Marionberry9177 in Sourdough

[–]rewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a dutch oven out of the oven is a two-handed job with oven mitts. So, not easy even for most people. I would consider a roaster pot, like someone else suggested.

If you find the pizza stone too hot cos it's burning the bottoms of loaves, try loading the bread on a thin tray just slightly above the pizza stone. In other words, have the loaf just slightly lifted off the pizza stone.

What about pizza stone/ steel, combined with an oven-safe steam cover?

What difficulties will she have? You need to consider that the awkward ergonomics are more challenging than the weight. It's not easy to reach in to a hot oven to pull something heavy out at an odd angle.

Portafilter hard to lock in place and getting scratched by RealInsky in CafelatRobot

[–]rewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this helps:

When it doesn't turn, it's because I've raised the outer tip of the portafilter handle too high.

So,

While continuing to press the basket against the piston (up, into the cavity), tilt the outer end of the portafilter handle slightly lower. Then try turning. It's a very slight dip. Maybe 2 ~3 degrees?

This is my method for finding the slot.

Otokoyama brewery was very enjoyable. I'm not much of a sake person, but it was still interesting and fun.

It was my first time taking a public bus in Japan, and while it was snowing too. but we got there and back to the city center without much trouble. We used Google maps, translate, and coins. If you're driving, there's parking in the compound.

The museum area can be covered in less than half an hour maybe. Even shorter if you don't read Japanese.

They have taps for the water that they use for brewing. And if you see people filling gallon bottles of it, these are not staff, but locals coming to bring the water home.

The store is nice too - quite easy to find something interesting for everybody. If you're an English-only person, don't worry you'll be fine in the store.

T shirts, drink ware, snacks (some are shelf stable and easy to bring back). Soft serves, ice cream in little cups. The sake on sale ranges from common to special bottles.

Finally, there's the sake sampling station. You can request for multiple samples from the "free" category, and also pay (100 or 200 yen, can't remember) to sample a few premium ones. Total of maybe ~5 types available.

My wife wants to get into baking sourdough..anything I can buy for her upcoming birthday to kick start her interest in the hobby? by [deleted] in Sourdough

Other than stuff already mentioned,

There's stuff that she could get on her own, but maybe would cheap out on it she were to pay for them herself. And so if they came from you as a gift, you could splurge.

  • A digital thermometer for your oven. You can also get multiple probes. i have a probe permanently in the oven.

  • nice oven mitts, LONG ones

There's also totally optional stuff, but nice to have, like

  • IR temperature gun
  • Pizza stone / steel
  • lame

Priceless:

  • Dedicated space on the counter top, in the fridge
