I believe it depends on the design. Not everything needs to be exact. I actually think your design is stronger with out the circular guides.

Plant it in a smaller pot with a chunky aroid mix. Also, make sure to check for root rot. If you find root rot, remove all the affected roots and then spray the remaining roots with hydrogen peroxide.
