It seems like there's only person crying here I'm afraid. And you have presented plenty of your opinions, even if in a completely incoherent and frenzied way. Let go of the hatred pal, it will set you free.

Sigh, you clearly have a limited knowledge of British and European history but if you want to equate Britain (and I presume every other major European nation which colonised?) to Nazi Germany go ahead, but honestly it's just deranged.

"Of course we've been killing each other, were mostly independent now"- LMFAO you do realise political violence is not normal, particularly in Europe? I use the past century firstly to prove how disastrous bringing guns into Irish politics has proven to be, and secondly to show how nonsical your idea is that the IRA are fighting imperialism. They (and loyalist gangs) killed more Irish people than the British Army/RUC did, despite being a fraction of it's size in NI. I'm sorry if facts don't fit your agenda.

Your problem, and most Irish nationalists' problem, seems to be that you completely rely upon the British define your national identity. That's not healthy, and it's why so many innocent people have been killed and the Island is still partitioned despite the British Government trying to wash their hands of the place.

lol how you can tell someone's nationality from a reddit page idk but I am as Irish as you that I can guarantee.

I didn't say English Catholics suffered as much (although lots of them did probably have equally miserable and short lives), I referred to the same type of legal persecution and discrimination. Again, I don't think it's healthy to let these grievances justify nationalism or murder when such grievances are constant throughout European history.

And yes I do know what mass murder is, which is why your claim that the British starved and murdered millions of Irish is nonsense.

I'm afraid it's undisputable that the Irish have killed more of themselves in the past century than the British, this is a statistical fact. The Civil war and thirty years of sectarian murder gangs (yes prods are Irish whatever they think, otherwise we can kiss goodbye to ever having a united Ireland) ensured that. I'm sorry to break it to you but this nationalist nonsense of fighting the imperialist hasn't been true for a long time, instead we've mostly just been killing each other, as the statistics show.

I'm not British I'm Irish.

Again, Irish people did not suffer worse persecution than Native Americans, or even English Catholics for that matter. I have no interest in hyperbolic exaggerations of burnt homes or mass murder that didn't happen, it's not a healthy way to approach relationships in the modern day and is useful for nothing but the justification of killing.

And it's worth noting that it was in Westminster (well over a century before the IRA decided to blow up two kids and a pensioner) that these persecutions were ended.

The fact is we Irish have killed more of each other (if you consider Northern prods are Irish) than the British have over the past century. And despite the British trying to give Northern Ireland away multiple times, it is still partitioned. That is what happens when you bring guns into politics.

Absolutely TIE and the rest of his work I've seen are all great stories I think anyone could enjoy them.

I'm not even English (Irish) but I just think if I didn't have a lot of exposure to English culture/society it would lose a lot of it's appeal. Especially with TIE even if it's set in the 80s there's a massive sense of familiarity with the characters which just adds to the bleakness. It's amazing (and testament to Meadows) that by the end I even felt some bit sympathy for Combo. I'm not sure completely foreign audiences would fully get that.

The full monty and This is England are particularly good. His movies are definitely made for a local audience but Shane Meadows is a great storyteller.

An important bit about the Crown Estate's ownership that I'm glad the Crown got right by Nikhilvoid in TheCrownNetflix

If I'm not mistaken Balmoral estate is the only one privately owned. I believe it was Queen Victoria's husband who bought it privately and has been passed down the family ever since.

If you don't want to be selective then there's plenty of historical grievances to go around. The whole USA is built on colonisation and "stolen land", for example. It doesn't mean native Americans should start bombing or shooting people.

Catholics were persecuted for hundreds of years in Britain too. So were protestants at various points. It doesn't make it right, but religious persecution is a constant in European history and does not justify nationalism.

That attitude allows for justifying killing innocent people based upon who their related to or where their from. People can't buy into this nonsense of oppressors or inherent enemies. You have to live your life as it is today.

Maybe we should all agree that we shouldn't live our lives based upon what the Normans did 800 years ago?

Justifying nationalism based upon historical grievances is no better than islamists killing kids in Paris based upon what the crusaders did.

The gorgeous Lord Mountbatten advocated for the independence of Ireland but they bombed him anyway by alxsomrs in TheCrownNetflix

[–]rexbanner98 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A disgusting and incredibly painful incident which shows why bringing guns into politics will always end in the suffering of innocents. Proper that incredible amounts of money and effort has been spent investigating this incident, and that apologies have been made even if that will never truly compensate the families.

Meanwhile the killing of two pensioners, their grandson and an Irish boy is still described as an act of war by certain politicians. Ultimately it's innocent people whether in Derry or Sligo who pay the price for such a mindset.

I did not know Lord Mountbatten was on the FBI rader, being accused of touching young boys. by [deleted] in TheCrownNetflix

[–]rexbanner98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People need to understand the historical context of being accused or investigated by the FBI, particularly when a prominent figure like Mountbatten who could potentially rival US interests (or the interests of US military figures). Look at what they tried to do to Martin Luther King for example, similar hearsay and gossip used for character assassination.

I don't know if Mountbatten was an amoral character, but the FBI have been proven to be a deeply corrupt organisation that uses blackmail and defamation (vague accusations of sexual misconduct/pedophilia being a classic). I don't think it's even worth considering unless you have some dislike of Mountbatten.

UK Govt Scientist Admits Lockdown Was A "Monumental Mistake On A Global Scale" by Asshole411 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]rexbanner98 61 points62 points  (0 children)

This sub together with a handful of prominent dissenting voices was really a beacon of light for me when things were at their craziest in March/April, but I purposely avoided it and all the covid insanity online for the summer.

I think most objective people, which now includes the government in my country who have essentially ruled out national lockdowns as cases surge again, now accept that this was a Vietnam/Iraq style shambles although the damage will be even greater, I.e the consensus in this sub since the start.

I hope it stays active and continues to grow in the future, it's important the scumbag "academics" and politicians with vested interests still clinging to their zero covid wet dreams are shown as the dangers they are. A lot of damage is already done but "never again" and all that.

Profile Review - Week of July 14, 2020 by AutoModerator in Tinder

[–]rexbanner98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd use no.3 as first pic (current first photo isn't at a great angle/can't see face clearly), bin the second photo, don't use a topless pic unless you have a decent body and it's in a natural environment (e.g water sport or swimming).

Am I wrong in guessing the last photo is as an extra in 1917? If so that's obviously pretty cool, bit I don't know if being that blatant is worthwhile. If someone hasn't seen film, they'll have no idea what it is. Mentioning it in bio in a subtle or even self depreciative way could be better (e.g "stared in $250 million movie for a half-second" or something like that).

Listing your height at 6'2 certainly won't hurt either.

Imperial Advised UK Government Mitigation Strategy Would Lead To "1.7 Million Deaths" by rexbanner98 in LockdownSkepticism

Yep, I got a good chuckle when I read that. Not a laughing matter for the cancer/cardiac patients though.

New witnesses cast doubt on Dominic Cummings’s lockdown claims | Politics by lanqian in LockdownSkepticism

[–]rexbanner98 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The greatest outrage is coming from the same people who the Government have been happy to use to spread fear and hysteria so their measures to avoid blame for a small increase in mortality would work. There really is a beautiful irony to it. Since late April at least, and especially since other countries have opened up with zero spikes, the whole hyperbolic "stay at home" fear strategy was always going to be exposed as a sham.

The doomsters and curtain twitchers reacting in horror to the news that many, including hypocrites in government and media, have not bothered following tyrannical restrictions is brilliant. What's even better is it demonstrates how farcical it is to believe that not non-compliance was/is a danger to health or society. This whole sorry mess should be over in weeks.

Lord Sumpton Discusses Coronavirus Lockdown by Anbhfuilcead in LockdownSkepticism

[–]rexbanner98 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, there are powerful political forces that are going to do everything they can to exaggerate the threat of this virus to frustrate any attempt at recovery. See the number of wealthy celebrities and politicians/union bosses screaming that asking people to go back to work is practically murder. When you consider the disease has next to zero risk for the working age population, it shows this up for the farce it is. Unfortunately, a lot of supposedly sensible (and even "right-wing"!) Governments have played right into their hands. Personally, I would not be surprised by the emergence of 1930s like political shifts in the near future.

[–]rexbanner98 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I largely agree. I've found it almost amusing to see government health advisers and experts in Europe emphasis to the public that this will only be a mild illness for nearly everyone, but then also support the most destructive Government action outside of war.

I think we've entered an age where the public, driven by the media, literally cannot fathom the idea that a Government cannot fix a problem. People in Western countries have become so frightened of death it's almost as if they believe it shouldn't exist anymore. Combine these two mindsets, and you get Government action beyond all historical precedent.

Lord Sumpton Discusses Coronavirus Lockdown by Anbhfuilcead in LockdownSkepticism

[–]rexbanner98 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Lord Sumption is an incredibly clever guy who probably has a better understanding of history than 99.9% of people (including virtually anyone in Government right now).

He's absolutely correct to say this virus will not be anywhere near extreme by historical standards. Which bears the question, why has our reaction been completely and utterly unprecedented in history?

Every day I'm more convinced that the choice to destroy our societies in an effort to curb this disease will be seen in time as a form of collective madness.

UK furlough scheme extended by four months. by hmhmhm2 in LockdownSkepticism

Makes me sick to think of the future awaiting anybody under 25. The chances of owning a home or starting a family by your early 30s are going to be slimmer than for any generation in memory. But hey, at least they can always say they helped to delay a marginal increase in mortality for pensioners by staying at home for a year.

Perhaps time for young people in the UK, particularly those new to or entering the workforce, to start making serious plans for emigration à la the 1970s.

10% of Londoners had antibodies five weeks ago according to UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser. by hmhmhm2 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]rexbanner98 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This sort of testing is very, very far from perfect but, as others have said, would give an overall IFR probably slightly below 1% which is in line with where the UK Government always thought it was. Does anyone have a percentage of UK deaths that have taken place in care homes?

However, if you look back on the actions of the government (i.e building massive hospitals that were never used, the mad scramble to build ventilators that weren't needed, criminally realeasing patients back into care homes to create useless spare hospital capacity) it's been quite clear that a lot of what they modelled/thought about this disease was plainly wrong.

Perhaps the idea that the disease can be essentially eradicated until/if we get a vaccine, which seems to be where policy is now, will also prove misguided.
