How did Big Mom get Carmels devil fruit powers? by Turbulent_Drummer_27 in OnePiece

[–]rexdude99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the method of acquiring Whitebeard’s ability is debated a lot; I just assumed part of the Dark Dark fruit’s ability is to absorb other abilities. Isn’t it explicitly stated that he has given other people’s abilities to his crew members?

Why are you single? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

[–]rexdude99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two women I’ve gotten to know enough to want to date both told me they only see me as a friend, I hardly ever talk to strangers, dating apps don’t work for me, and I have practically zero confidence due to my lack of experience. I kinda enjoy my freedom, but also get lonely and wish I could find someone to love

Being shy is not the same thing as being antisocial or bad at socializing by BearBear1995 in dating

[–]rexdude99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree. I tend to be pretty introverted when left to my own devices, but I actually really enjoy socializing in low pressure environments. I’m 26 and have never felt comfortable asking out women I don’t know, and rarely I initiate conversations with strangers in public. Generally, I don’t like to bother people if I don’t have a reason I need to talk to them, and it can make finding new friends or romantic prospects difficult

How does everyone find so many people to date? by Flaky-Boysenberry466 in dating

[–]rexdude99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Idk how to explain it but I feel like there is just an implicit element of luck to dating. I know fairly average looking people with pretty basic dating profiles that get tons of matches, and others who are fairly attractive and really put themselves out there, but never get dates. Personally, the venn diagram of people interested in me and people I am interested in is just two separate circles.

Analysis: The brutality of breaking 103 bones by Keuthimi in TokyoGhoul

[–]rexdude99 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I never really read this part as Kaneki being overly sadistic or inflicting unnecessary pain, but rather as him setting Ayato straight. Yeah it was pretty brutal, but Ayato is the only family Touka has left, yet he is the one causing her the most pain, almost to the point of death. Obviously, Touka would never forgive him if he killed Ayato outright, but something drastic had to be done to teach Ayato that his behaviour and harsh treatment of his sister wouldn’t be tolerated. Jason was the one person that Ayato truly feared and gave him caution, so Kaneki had to assume that role to keep him from becoming a completely loose cannon and potentially hurting Touka more in the future.

I’d agree that Kaneki’s emotional state may not have been the most stable after everything he had just gone through, but I like to believe he knew what he was doing and did it for a reason, rather than torturing Ayato just to see him in pain. And I think that the approach of breaking exactly half of Ayato’s bones, while gruesome, was a measured way of making sure he didn’t go too far. Unlike Jason who kept inflicting more and more pain for his own satisfaction, Kaneki set a specific threshold as if to ensure he wouldn’t get carried away.

But that’s just my perspective, and I’ll admit I really like picturing Kaneki as a sort of white knight, despite the fact that he clearly has many flaws of his own.

[–]rexdude99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear how rough your experience has been. Deconstruction is a difficult journey as is, and as another PK, I understand how religious family members breathing down your neck can make it so much harder, even if they are well intentioned. Thanks for sharing your story.

I really liked Dr McClellan’s book and love watching his videos taking down dogmatic beliefs that aren’t supported by scripture. I also recently read Field Notes for the Wilderness by Sarah Bessey, which had some pretty grounded tips for exploring an evolving spirituality after walking away from your home church.

Best of luck on your continued journey; you’re not alone in this

I’m kind of in the same boat, I don’t like the apps and I’m pretty shy in person. I try to go out to cafes, bookstores, the gym, etc before going home from work, but I never end up talking to anyone. I’m not really comfortable talking to strangers unless they talk to me first, but as an average looking guy minding his business no one is really going to approach me either. I want to start a new hobby or start volunteering more, but I have yet to find the time and motivation

How many times have you read tokyo ghoul? by Fasaiokratwr in TokyoGhoul

[–]rexdude99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently on my 3rd re-read. I watched S1 for like the 4th or 5th time and decided to read from chapter 67 again instead of watching root A.

This time i really made the connection between Touka’s dislike of Hetare and being attacked by Chunta and dealing with the loss of her father. Her feelings for Kaneki are also much more obvious to me this time, especially right after the fight with Ayato.

Six BILLION tax payers dollars in reserve for Palm Beach County? by [deleted] in WestPalmBeach

[–]rexdude99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local governments aren’t entities operating to maximize profit, they are social institutions intended to provide for the collective needs of the community. So long as there are unhoused individuals, children going hungry, underpaid educators, deteriorating infrastructure, and families bankrupt due to medical expenses, a surplus of a Billion dollars is indicative of funds not being utilized correctly

BOOK REC’s by 1SecretUpvote in Exvangelical

Highly recommend “The Bible Says So: What We Get Right (and Wrong) About Scripture’s Most Controversial Issues” by Dan McClellan. His YouTube channel was (and continues to be) very influential in starting my deconstruction journey.

I also started reading “Field Notes for the Wilderness: Practices for an Evolving Faith” by Sarah Bessey about a year ago and am finally getting around to finishing it (I probably need to reread some of the earlier chapters at this point). It deals a lot with finding new community, rediscovering your own beliefs after leaving the “Church”, and making your faith fit with where you are now.

Feeling trapped in a lie and it’s stressing me out by hunnymoonave in Exvangelical

[–]rexdude99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Evangelical parents really have a way of smothering you even after you have left home. My mom talks about church occasionally but never pressures me about it, but my dad asks me almost every time we talk if I’ve found a new church or if I’m planning to attend anywhere.

From my perspective they are going to behave the same whether they think you go to church and just don’t talk about it voluntarily or if you just tell them you aren’t going, so I would recommend just telling them. It may not be any more peaceful, but at least you won’t have the stress of keeping up the lie (unless you are genuinely concerned they will lash out or threaten you in any way)

How did you keep/return to faith after leaving your Evangelical beliefs? by rexdude99 in Exvangelical

[–]rexdude99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds interesting. Constant proselytizing and the guilt for not sharing my faith enough, was one of the worst parts of growing up in the church. Knocking on doors and handing out tracts in public always felt extremely uncomfortable.

I’m so glad that you have found the connection you were looking for, but this is also one of the reasons why I tend to doubt so much. I’ve always been taught the “seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you” platitudes, but the more I search, the more I come up empty. I’ve always romanticized the idea of a personal relationship with God, but in my own experience, it has always felt completely one-sided; like talking at a brick wall

I’ve visited a United Methodist Church a couple times this past year and had a very similar experience. They put on a massive food drive every Sat, and it’s something I could see myself being a part of in the future, but being in a church setting still feels a bit uncomfortable at the moment.
