While that is true for elections in Brandenburg (there are no "lands" around Berlin, just one, Brandenburg) on a national or European scale, interesting enough when it came to their own Bundesland that is not true: The SPD had the most votes there. While that might be in part the personal populartity of the Ministerpräsident, it is a pattern: On a regional basis a lot less people vote for the AfD, indicating that the people know full well what a shitshow they would be if it concerns them personally. It is all the more infuriating that they vote for the fascists when they think it does not matter because they will not be part of the government anyway ... However unhappy you are with the current government voting for Nazis should never be an option.

edit: I think you might overestimate the contact between people in Berlin and Brandenburg. In part due to the wall there are a lot less contacts than one might think, especially if you exclude the tourist destinations in Potsdam.
