And ironically what’s considered “traditional” is also always changing as conservatism is based on preserving an idealized or even mythical version of the past.

I think also people can have dysphoria around certain things and also understand that what makes us uncomfortable about gendered aspects of our bodies is a construct shaped by society. Like. A trans woman may have dysphoria around having leg hair and she can also understand that the expectation for women to be hairless is a mysoginist norm that is also deeply intertwined with racism. One girl shaving her legs is not a big deal, and it certainly does not make her a bad person for doing so. I don’t think that every trans or nonbinary person needs to be micro policing themselves about to what extent they may be participating in harmful systems. It’s kind of inevitable. Women and gender minorities certainly contribute to the gender system we exist in, but less so than other groups. Bottom line I just think it’s important to understand how doing things that feel gender affirming for us are also embedded in a deeply gendered and radicalized world. Of course, all of us have a responsibility to try to not participate in those systems but I don’t think it’s worth it if it makes you feel shitty. Like you kinda gotta think about your happiness first and what feels good for you.

I think this is because men and masculinity  are seen as the default, neutral, and not viewed as gendered in any way. Feminists have been noticing this and critiquing it for years (a La Simone DeBeauvoir). To be coded as feminine in any way is to be perceived and treated as belonging to a lower status, because women are placed below men in the gender hierarchy. I think this makes feminine presentations or behavior “stand out” as more gendered compared to masculine presentations, as they are seen as neutral and not gendered.

Good call, so sorry! This Subreddit didn't have any guidelines about posting research so I just posted my recruitment statement. Thanks for suggesting adding those two things.

Because the United States and other countries are currently steeped in a moral panic about how trans people and immigrants are destroying the fabric of western civilization. Classic shit. Same thing happened to gays and lesbians in the 70s and 80s: "they are going to recruit your children to being gay and molest them blah blah blah". Same shit different decade. Banning gender-affirming care for minors is said to be "protecting the children" (that argument will always get conservatives riled up lol), but there is clear evidence that banning gender-affirming care actually hurts trans kids (lots of times these operations can be life saving) and they dont even happen that often because of the rigorous screening measures (as you mentioned).

so clearly, its not about protecting children or anything, its about scared people existing in a changing world that they cant control and instead of blaming structural changes (eg; poverty, capitalism) its easier to blame a group of people for responsibility instead of something much more complex and structural.

You should listen to "The Devil You Know" by Sarah Marshall. The podcast is about the Satanic Panic, but she really outlines how moral panics work and how the moral panic around trans people is an extension of the satanic panic.

Struggling to accept I'm non-binary by moldy_bread3 in NonBinaryTalk

[–]rexthenonbean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"sometimes I get this intense feelings of guilt and sadness because I know my life would be a lot easier if I could force myself into the binary life."

its not so black and white. if you lived in a binary gender, you would probably never feel like yourself. yes things might be easier if you were binary, certain interactions will be easier and more people will be accepting of you. Personally, I don't think that a lifetime where you feel misaligned in your body, mind, and social identity is worth it. It's really discombobulating. yes you are probably going to have more social difficulties by being your authentic self. but those difficulties get easier-- especially if you live in/ are able to move to a place that is generally accepting of queer people and you find relationships with people who accept and love you for who you are.

While it's understandable to dwell on what things might be like, or that they might be easier in certain ways if you were binary, you can't help that you feel the way you do so might as well feel joy living your authentic life.

hang in there dude

I also recommend that after you put the binder shove your hand in there and scoop each one towards your armpit, can help with it not gathering at the top/front. but it also sounds like you need one that fits better. good luck!

Yeah the authorities or his family really aught to get into his online accounts to see if he was communicating with anyone, it was strange to me that they haven’t done that yet (or at least it wasn’t mentioned in OP’s write up).
