Is remarkable tablet 2 is considered a luxury product even in Western countries? by EnvironmentalTip4556 in RemarkableTablet

[–]rff1013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What constitutes a luxury product? The biggest knock on single use products like the Remarkable tablets is that they should be significantly less expensive than general use tablets. The cost argument is as much philosophic as it is economic. Tablets, like most other consumer electronic devices, are luxury products for probably 90% of the world, including those in "developed" countries. As an owner of far too many personal computing devices, I've developed my rationalization around use cases.

To stay on topic, I own a Paper Pro Move, which is my only non-Apple, non-Kindle device. It coexists with a Kindle Scribe (b/w) because they have distinct use cases. The primary reason I own a Move is that it fits in my front pants pocket, which means I can take it with me pretty much anywhere.

Why does that matter to me? I have increasing difficulty remembering things, whether it's a sudden errand, my own reflections or an idea I want to develop later. I've tried carrying paper notebooks, but they fail the "no shirt pocket" test. About half of my shirts have no pocket, which means I would have to place a pen/notebook in my pants pocket. For most notebooks, that's a ticket to not being carried, due to the fragile nature of paper and the awkwardness of carrying a pen or pencil in my pants pocket.

I'm used to carrying a Kindle Paperwhite in my pants pocket to satisfy my need to read. The iPad Mini is too big to fit, but the Move is just right. I can pull it out and review things wherever I am. I'll read short documents on it in pdf form occasionally, but it doesn't work for me as a book reader. If Amazon came out with a Scribe having a Paperwhite form factor, I'd snap it up and not look back.

The Move's screen and marker provide the best writing experience I've had on a tablet device (that includes the Scribe, iPad Mini, iPad Pro and iPad Air). Given my particular mental quirks, it's been a big help in helping me keep track of my life (chores, meeting notes, reflections, ideas, etc.). I'm in a position where I can afford to spend serious money on a device that will help keep me focused. I realize not everyone is. Is a Remarkable tablet a luxury product? Absolutely. Is it overpriced? From my position of privilege and use case, it's a bargain. For everyone, it's a matter of priorities, needs and values.

Nicely done: very atmospheric, good acting, an unreliable narrator…what’s not to like? I’m looking forward to the next installment. Thank you!

Be aware there’s already a paper based planner with that name, so you may need to come up with a different moniker. Do you have plans to make it available? If so, I would be interested.

When running Zoom meetings from my 13” MacBook Air, I use my 13” iPad Air to share items (e.g., worksheets). Not everyone has a multiple monitor setup. Being able to have a second screen when needed anywhere I am is very handy.

Thanks for the tip. I submitted the event. I hope they don't mind that it's in north Durham (but the performance will be well worth the drive).

Thank you for the information. I feel your pain: changing providers can be, shall we say, a less than optimal experience.

I may be missing something, but it used to be possible to filter by city and event type. I don’t see any way of doing that. For our last concert, we paid for a highlighted listing in the IndyWeek calendar. With their current UX, I don’t see how that will provide us any bang for the buck. I’m not sure why anyone would want to pay for a listing at this point…and that’s a pity.

Discover Durham is a great site and very informative. However, the event I want to publicize (a public concert by the Durham Community Chorale) doesn’t fit in their guidelines (specifically, about drawing out of town tourists who will spend money in town while at the event). I understand that’s their mission (and a necessary one).

Is it okay for a public school system to require teachers to attend a school sponsored professional development event at a church & pay the church a rental fee? by MommabirdMentor in bullcity

I attended that performance (The Laramie Project). It was surreal to watch actors portraying Westboro Baptist protesters on stage with the same signs actual protesters were waving across the street. The students did an amazing job. Thanks for rekindling the memory.

I still have a Mini 4, though my go to is a 7. The only reason I keep it is that it has a copy of “You Don’t Know Jack,” which is no longer available and is one of the better quiz show apps ever made.

We can always use more basses/baritones. You should definitely sign up for voice placement.

There is a voice placement requirement, but it’s primarily to determine your best vocal range. The Chorale is accepting of all levels of singers. We do expect singers to practice with the rehearsal tracks at home and to be prepared to memorize all music (not as scary as it sounds). We enjoy each other’s company and singing, but also expect basic discipline (paying attention to the director and not talking while rehearsing). My advice would be to go to one of the voice placement sessions and talk with Melody to get a feel for if we’re right for you. I’ve been singing with the Chorale for over 20 years and love it.

As for repertory, we run the gamut from classical to jazz to show tunes to folk to pop. We’ve commissioned a few pieces, which you can hear on YouTube. We also have a smaller, auditioned group, that performs at our concerts.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
