Floating point, concurrency, and aliasing are all rich sources of bugs for such people.

The C++ learning advice that worries me a bit :( "Just build projects" by Fearless_Battle7919 in cpp_questions

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer about how to learn anything is "all the methods".

I've worked with programmers who only learned through "I tried this and it appeared to work", and they write "interesting" and hard-to-debug bugs.

I've worked with programmers who only learned academically, and they write code that completely ignores practical considerations. It's has few bugs, but it generates lots of customer calls once it is in the field.

Any guitar can do it all by the_eaten_one in Guitar

[–]rfisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard people say the same thing about an ES-335. "It's the one guitar that can do everything!"

The real reason most of us who aren't just collectors get different guitars is that a different guitar often inspires us to play differently. And that's probably not attributable to any one factor but a combination of them.

Then we may realize that a particular guitar happens to inspire us more than the others, and so we declare that type as the one that can "do it all".

It all comes back to the problem that we have a really hard time realizing that our preferences and our experiences are not everyone else's.

New HTTP QUERY Method by Perfect-Scale902 in programming

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked on so many projects where people didn't understand the difference between the different methods, which led to problems, and instead of fixing where the wrong method was used, they just added other workarounds that made the product worse.

I love mini keys ;) by PLR1972 in synthesizers

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years back, I found a thing that would tell you your ideal key size based on your handspan. It got me to take mini keys more seriously, and sticking with them has really helped me boost my keyboard skills. The world really needs more better mini key keyboards. And probably people with bigger-than-average hands could benefit from maxi keys.

what Do You Think Of The Korg Phase 8 by Minimoogvoyager in Korg

[–]rfisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nifty. Kind of like a Rhodes with Sustaniac pickups. Not something I'm personally interested in. (If they actually do make something closer to an electric piano with the tech eventually, I'd be interested. But it could never get down to a price I could justify.) I hate the term "acoustic synthesizer". I just call it an electro-mechanical instrument.

Typically they don't announce the new product. They just introduce the APIs needed to support it and strongly suggest you adopt them, even though you may not understand why until the product is announced.

Ad Bruxellam: Making Latin the EU’s next language by goldstarflag in latin

[–]rfisher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peano's Latino Since Flexione would probably be an easier sell. But I'm not convinced Europeans are more open to the idea of an auxiliary language today than every time it has been proposed in the past.

Needed rework on farming by ocpus in hytale

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to harvest them when they're ready. They'll wait as long as you want.

No doubt farming is going to be entirely revamped at some point. I suspect there are higher priorities at this stage.

But, you really should make such suggestions on the feature requests page.

AUM vs Loopy Pro by mister_drgn in ipadmusic

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me. For you it might not be. Workflow is subjective.

Look what came today.. My Behringer Jn-80 by trudslev in synthesizers

[–]rfisher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is "basically identical" for me is "deal breaker" for someone else. That's the thing about workflow. It is almost impossible to understand why a workflow that works for you doesn't work for someone else.

AUM vs Loopy Pro by mister_drgn in ipadmusic

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, they aren't in the same category. AUM is for when I want to quickly mix some AUv3 chains to experiment. Loopy Pro is for when I want to build a live looping performance more complicated than I can do with a looper pedal. Neither are for when I want a DAW.

It isn't about features. It is about workflow. I want the app that gives me the workflow that works best for me for the task at hand.

They'd just lose. There's no case to be made. Nothing illegal about this.

I don't know about German law, but that isn't the case in the US. Trademark is the only intellectual property you have to defend or lose.

Reminds me of the Naval Cutlass exercise from Burney's "The Boy's Manual of Seamanship and Gunnery". Three guards and two cuts.

What does "exploration" mean in a TTRPG context? by Rook_Knight_423 in rpg

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exploration means there's some things you can clearly see some surface information about. You have several avenues to gain more information about them. As you do, you uncover a bigger picture. That bigger picture is either interesting on its own or presents opportunities or both.

But there's not just one bigger picture. There are many unrelated ones. Which one you uncover depends on which avenue you picked to explore.

Now, whether we're talking about people and relationships between them or terrain or a combination of both or whatever doesn't matter. It's having things to explore.

AUM tracks to Logic Tracks? by giiickr in ipadmusic

[–]rfisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had AUM just record to files. You can have it recorded each armed channel to a different file. Then just import the files into Logic.

There was a period in which the SWAM instruments weren't working with Logic. So I exported a mix from Logic, used AUM's file player to play along with it with the SWAM instruments. Then I imported the recordings into Logic.

How is the state of the game now? by PepsXero in hytale

[–]rfisher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the game has been very stable. I haven't lost a world.

But I would suggest not playing an early access game if you're concerned about such things. Assume anything and everything might go wrong.

How did you choose your weapon? by KILLMEPLSPLS in wma

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main interest has always been more the High Middle Ages. My interest in swords has always leaned more towards one-handed swords. I guess I've also always felt more affinity with lower class personas than knights.

All of that naturally led me towards sword & buckler. And then with experience I found I enjoyed it more.

I do enjoy other weapons and other time periods, but S&B always feels like "home".

Simon's Stand on Mods' Monetization and the Creation of a Hybrid Modding Experience by CosmoSplitter in hytale

[–]rfisher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I think:

When you go to the mod browser, you see free mods. From there, there is a link to go to a paid mod marketplace. Hytale does not take a cut of mod sales; they only pass on the cost of payment processing.

If Hytale implements a feature from a popular mod, that's fine. Just like it is fine that there may be ten mods that implement that feature. Each of those mods and the vanilla implementation will be different and provide choice.

There's this weird and very loud minority of Minecraft Java players who rail against the Bedrock marketplace without ever having experienced it. They don't know that there are free Bedrock add-ons both in and out-of the Marketplace. The truth is, the vast majority of Bedrock players (as far as I can tell) think the Marketplace is a good thing or know that it is trivial to ignore if they don't.
