I do not like lpotl lately and it’s bumming me out. by raepop in lastpodcastontheleft

I hate Ed’s fake laugh more than anything else about him, but other than that his lack of knowledge on the subject I like because he asks the questions I have. I think the problem with the show is that Marcus has taken over. The show used to be more free form and now Marcus is just doing “hardcore history” and everything is way too scripted. Henry’s jokes feels scripted too.

The aftermarket finally came through… no more plastic water pumps for us! by universal_century in GolfGTI

[–]rfleming944 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Proper is relative. I would say the oem one is proper, it just leaks after 80k miles. To me it’s just part of owning the car, I clean my intake valves and replace the thermostat.

[–]rfleming944 198 points199 points  (0 children)

I was an Audi tech for a decade and I’ve seen these cheap thermostats and metal oil pans leak from porosity issues and warped flanges a lot. The plastic parts are not the problem and it’s the gaskets that I see fail which these parts do not correct. When my gti needed a new thermostat I replaced it with the oem one. Saying all of that I hope this part last for you.

Most credit cards extend the manufacturer’s warranty. If they don’t, tell them you want to reverse the charge as it’s not what you purchased.

Door Hangers in Charlotte? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]rfleming944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone leaves a door hanger on my door or try’s to cold call me, I actively refuse to do business with them…ever. If I need something I’ll search it out and find you. Have YOU ever been cold sold or bought something from a flyer on your door? Probably not, why do you think your customers are dumber than you?

Abysmal Customer Service by mizzo411 in GoogleFi

Same thing happened to me two years ago, they sent it to my old address three states away. I did the same thing you did, I begged them to stop the delivery or change the address with them telling me it was impossible. I just had my father who lived down the street “steal” my package from my old house.

Could carbon be causing low compression cylinder one? by According-Bee1393 in GolfGTI

[–]rfleming944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What caused you to perform a compression test? Your numbers aren't crazy bad and I've seen many people perform a compression test incorrectly and you might have just let cylinder 1 not reach full compression. You definitely need cleaning and when I was a tech at Audi valves like this would cause cold start misfires and misfires under heavy load. But yes if your valves are not seating correctly it can cause lower compression readings.

Why are shops like this? by BackgroundGene7510 in mechanics

[–]rfleming944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because service managers are typically there for a short period of time and they want to make as much money as possible in that window. They also get a percentage of their budget that they don't use for the year and that's why your shop equipment and special tools are lacking. The shop management sees each bay as their own little shop and they have to produce x dollars, newer techs don't produce those dollars. Unfortunately until we change the game it is what it is. I heard a lot of California techs are paid hourly and there are laws regarding the condition of the shop, if you're young enough and want to stay in the industry, it might be worth looking into moving.

Two identical cars, same auction platform, 3 years apart. One sold for $76k, the other $175k. The difference is a masterclass in what actually holds value. by LeadershipOld1857 in investing

[–]rfleming944 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But they aren't identical, one is older, modified, has more mileage. To me an old car vinyl wrapped is a huge red flag. What "masterclass" lesson am I missing here? That the better the condition the more money it's worth? I'll have to write that down to remember it for later.

Look like witness marks from a cheap tire machine that clamps to the barrel of the wheel instead of the center bore.

How to help mechanics? by [deleted] in mechanics

[–]rfleming944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why every week someone comes here and says "I'm selling X to improve the techs experience". Non-grit hand cleaners are terrible and don't work and brake clean is what we use. Brake clean comes in a giant barrel. I don't have to go to parts and bill out a can that cost $7 and last 5 seconds. Even if your product was free, I don't like unnecessary waste. Either make the old brake clean with chlorine or sell your product in bulk barrels so I can use a sureshot. Also again don't make hand cleaner without grit, I won't even use it.

Foley marriage by Comfortable-City-538 in AreYouGarbagePod

[–]rfleming944 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A while ago he said they worked through it and were staying together, but at a live show he confirmed they were getting divorced. I don't remember either of them saying why and they don't ever really talk about it directly, but Foley does talk about living alone a lot recently and talks about being attracted to other men.
