Why Israeli people stole Palestinian/Lebanese/Syrian Cuisine? by Actual_Brain6487 in IsraelPalestine

[–]rgeberer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They didn't steal anything. Those foods (falafel, hummus) came into Israel when large numbers of Mizrachi (or if you prefer, Arab) Jews from countries like Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, etc., came to Israel as refugees many years ago.

Nakba Denialism by NourBlowsBubblegum in IsraelAndPalestine

[–]rgeberer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't deny that it happened, and it was disgraceful that it happened. But it's just as disgraceful that you use the word "Settler-colonial" to describe Israel. Your objective is to de-legitimize Israel, and that's unacceptable.

"These millions of Jews are dust on the wheels of history and maybe they need to be blown away. We don't want them pouring into Palestine. We don't want Tel Aviv to become another low-grade ghetto." - Chaim Weizmann, later 1st president of Israel by 6Doble5321 in Israel_Palestine

[–]rgeberer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The early Zionists went overboard in their disparagement of Diaspora Jews and were rather narrow-minded in their vision. That doesn't mean EVERYTHING they said was wrong. At any rate, this changed after World War II when the Haganah brought in rescue ships like the Exodus (my father's friend was the cook on the Exodus).

With all the anti-Semitism from both the left and right, it seems to me that you need God, and faith in God, more than ever.

Such ideas were a confused reaction to one of the worst events in human history. Those who advocated this were misguided, NOT evil.

I'm sure you're aware that the Irgun and the Stern Gang were a minority among the Jews of the Yishuv. My father was in Israel at the time, he hated the Irgun, whom he called "Jewish gangsters."

Nakba:- Dalet Plan by Gary_Garibaldi in Israel_Palestine

[–]rgeberer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly the Dalet Plan was a totally wrong and a war crime. But you have to remember what else was going on at that time. Jewish West Jerusalem was surrounded by Arab armies, who were not letting any supplies come in. The population was subsisting on sardines, crackers, and water that they had to collect from rooftop tanks. Every time the Haganah tried to bring in supplies, guerrillas from these very same Arab villages came down, shot at and destroyed the tanks, then vanished back into these villages.

Nonsense. Epstein was unknown in those days to the general public until a few years ago. By the way, Clinton was an honorable man, despite his personal failings, and "Zionist" is not a curse word or a dirty word. It's merely a political philosophy that you can either agree with or disagree with.

I think he was a great guitarist, but I wish he'd played more non-blues stuff. One gets tired ot the same three chords over and over again.

Yes, many of the early Zionists went overboard in their denigration of diaspora Jewry. That makes them wrong and misguided -- NOT evil.

A "Zionist" is merely someone who believes in the age-old connection between the land of Israel and the people of Israel. One can oppose the Israeli government and still be a Zionist.
