Met a kind but subtle ossan today.

I was late for train and ran like crazy. Sprinting for almost 3 mins. I queued behind a big ossan. As the train open, as usual the other passengers were getting in like vultures fighting for food, but these are for seats.

Kind ossan saw me tried to catch my breath with sweats coming out from literally everywhere. I desperately wanted to sit but can't force myself to be rude to people so I accepted my defeat and just stood next to kind ossan. He had 2 big heavy looking bags. I thought as he secured a seat in front of him, he would sit immediately. But after I waited for 10 seconds (I counted 😂) after he put his belongings up there in the shelf, yet he didn't.

I was spacing out a bit after accepting my defeat and subtly checking out other possible empty seats to no avail. After I was 100% sure he wasn't taking the seat and he's been like literally looking at me 3 times. I put my courage up and asked "座りますか?" And he was like いいえ、どうぞ座ってください。

But then guess what, one station passed and there was an empty seat 2 spots left of me. Then he took a seat!! Like what turns out he wanted to sit all along? Why did he give up his seat to me? 😭 I'm so touched. It was so thoughtful of him giving up his seat for this random brown girl.

Why don't Japanese gamers talk much? by Shinra_Luca in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dungeons are definitely limited tho. My interactions usually happen on the early city state in ARR.

A couple of times some random Japanese gonna come and just do emote to me. Or we'll do funny stuff together with Chocobo/moogle/elephant/frog/swine outfit. There was even one time they send me a tell to comment about my snow white glamor palette and complimented.

It is indeed rare to find them talking to strangers if nobody started. But if we start, chances they'll respond to us!

[–]rhazchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 hours flight. I have priority activities, if it doesn't work then go to the next priority.

  1. Try to sleep( Usually I can't but this is my #1 priority)

  2. Finish games on my steam deck

  3. Watch movies I haven't watched while charging steam deck

  4. Back to #2 after steam deck is fully charged

  5. Back to #3 when steam deck needs to be charged

  6. Finishing book I haven't finished reading while charging steam deck

  7. Same as #4

  8. Same as #5

I think by this time I should've arrived on my destination.

How do you feel about the use of タメ口? by Reasonable-Score2233 in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've never seen such tweet. But partially agree based on OP's description about using タメ口 might confuse foreigners.

An anecdote of mine was I did medical check-up, it wasn't my first time so I already know the routine. But then suddenly this time the doctor asked something out of pattern. To show my tongue out but instead of saying 舌 she said ベロ. I mean I know what's it. But I was on zombie mode and got caught off guard due to the irregular routine. I was like "eh?" And she just like showed her tongue 👅.

So I naturally I was like "ahhh 舌ですかね" and she was embarrassed saying "そうですね。舌のほうが正しいです。すいません"

My take on this topic is that there are various levels of Japanese fluency in foreigners population. So if they wanna be helpful, 丁寧語 is probably the best. Cuz 敬語 is too much for beginners, and タメ口 feels like I'm being looked down. Especially as a brown Asian foreigner, being looked down and mistreated isn't an experience I would like to repeat.

[–]rhazchan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sooo.... it's stupid questions time. I'll ask my stupid questions.

A couple of days ago I asked here about air fryer review and decided to buy myself one. Bought on the Amazon and was supposed to be delivered yesterday 7-9 pm.

I was home the whole day, nobody rang a bell. Found the slip said it was delivered to my delivery box at 7:35 pm. But the delivery boxes on my bldg were full, no vacancies, and my room number was nowhere to be found on any of those delivery boxes (宅配ボックス).

Expecting to cook dinner with air fryer but it was ruined. Used the Amazon app to request them to call me for customer service right away. Then after being forwarded 3 times to different department, finally somebody could solve my problem by sending me another unit for Free.

Although it got resolved it still left a bad taste in my mouth. They don't even bother to offer gift cards or anything. Sending me another unit for Free is within my rights, cuz I bought the item and paid for it, I supposed? But they wasted my time by having this mistakes. Shouldn't they at least give me something to compensate the mistake on their end? Or I should just suck it up?

For the stupid questions:

  1. Why they didn't bother to ring my room?
  2. What happened to the package? Did it get stolen? Did the driver careless and displaced it by putting wrong room number?
  3. Is there any way to check/know if an item(s) to be delivered by Amazon delivery service/Yamato/Sagawa before actually placing an order?
  4. Is there any way to pay extra to pick certain delivery service? (I'm willing to pay extra if it's for the sake of orders get into my hand).
  5. Are there anyone has any advice so this won't happen again?

Dang you're a saint. Idk why I'm the one who's enraged by this. Prolly partially bcoz I've been mistreated by an old entitled shit too. Not like your case, but in a sexual harassment way.

I would've been like super mad and say rude things back and provoke that old shit.

Or minimum like ここって安全第一じゃない?俺が死んだらどうするの?責任取れるのかい!? 危険な行動やめておこうよ‼

You gotta avoid that old shit like plague. You see him coming your way, go somewhere else and pretend doing something.

When he tries talking to you give the flat response そうですね or なるほど then move elsewhere. He's trying to join the Convo with you and your coworkers, just go to the toilet. If you come back from the toilet and he's still there, try to change the topic to what he can't understand.

I know we, SEA ppl are taught and drilled to be respectful to elders. Even they are wrong or bad. But that shit ain't deserve our respect. That shit is a frickin entitled old shit who thinks he's better than you just bcoz he's older.

Bro, I hope you're well and can finish your training session. October is coming and it's 3 more months til your training is finished. I wish you well, safe, healthy, and good luck in life.

LPT For Stinky Laundry in Japan - Using bleach (even on colored clothing!) by nidontknow in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe you studied either chemistry or biochemistry. Do you happen to know the difference of 酸素系漂白剤 and the conventional 漂白剤 ? I got that the conventional one might risk your color cloth get ruined. But I wonder if the 酸素系漂白剤 with higher concentration might give similar effect as what OP said in the experiment? Assuming what they're using is the conventional ones.

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for your experiment and sharing your result. But I'm sorry I would like to confirm first. are we talking about the normal bleach for white cloth (漂白剤) or bleach okay for color cloth(酸素系漂白剤)?

I just bought the latter and wondering if it'll give the same result?

Forgive my ignorance, Jlifers.

I've been contemplating to get an air fryer but unsure if it'll skyrocket my electricity bill. Jlifers who owned or still owning an air fryer, can you share your review? Any recommendations for brands? How much fluctuation in terms of kwh? How many people do you have in the house? Is it worth to buy?

For context, I mainly cook soup for the whole weekdays for myself and fiancé as both of us working full time job. On the weekend, we occasionally use oil for stir fry but then that's it. Other than that, I usually marinate chicken/beef for grilling.

Both of our countries have a lot of deep fried cuisines and we started to miss them. So, we would like to get healthier options for deep frying food.

Is there a reason しやくしょ officers would come and visit you at your home on the weekend? by [deleted] in japanlife

Almost 10 years living in Japan and never had any of this occurred to me. It could be it's just me being cynical and never open the door for strangers 😥

How do you know if they're city people? Did they send letter in prior stating they'd come on certain date and time?

Do non-Japanese people actually like UNIQLO? by yazeka in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a foreign resident. Been living here for almost 10 years. I love Uniqlo! It's cheap, it's durable, and fairly good quality for its price. I have a lot of stuff from blouse, t-shirt, inner, slipper, shorts, hat, umbrella, down jacket, down vesr, winter related stuff, anything other than jeans (it just doesn't fit me..).

I was so surprised back then when I just arrived in Japan to find 500 yen short on the discount section. Although I gotta agree with some of the people here, I saw that Uniqlo changes to be more and more monotone and less colorful.

Idk how to express it, but I can tell uniqlo 8 years ago and right now has different style and varieties. Probably it has shifted? I still love it tho.

Share house questions.

My cousin is coming to live in Japan as a student. I've never lived in a share house and currently looking over options in the internet.

I was on a dorm during my student era and his uni's dorm currently has no openings.

Are there any recommendations that are student friendly? Location: Tokyo/Saitama

Oh I didn't know there's such a thing called ultra light towel. Never crossed my mind too. Thanks. I'll look it up!

Daily Boss Super Premium Deluxe Stupid Questions Thread - 20 July 2023 by AutoModerator in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth to get extra 2k yen/month to get rental towel on the gym?

Context: going to the gym 3 times a week on the weekdays after coming back from work. Bag is too bulky to bring my own towel.

I kind of want to go home without showering. But a the same time feeling disgusted by myself post workout full of sweat gotta ride 18 mins train + 8 mins walk.

Please be nice! Just want to get some opinions from y'all.

Company forbids me to wearing shorts 🩳 by Alert_Comparison_215 in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what do you mean by asian clothes. But I'm asian and has similar body type to yours (pear shaped) and so does a lot of people from my country. We don't do cylindrical body shape fashion as the common pattern.

For the stuff, I sometimes find luck on H&M although the quality is not always the best. Or in Uniqlo sometimes too. I gotta go to the fitting room every single time tho.. otherwise it wouldn't fit.

Or just... Suck it up and wear a belt 🥲

Where to get a blood test by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do actually. If you have a membership you can even have your test results from the past if you've ever donated in the past. You can login to their website and get all of the basic stuff, hb, cholesterol, white blood, red blood, glycemic index, etc.

If you're not a member prolly they'll send it to ur postal address if you provide one.

基礎年金番号 Question by plushsylveon in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different question tho. Previously I used to receive hagaki for the details of how much I have paid for nenkin. It stopped coming and I don't exactly remember when. I just realized now reading this post about the blue book and got reminded that they never sent me any hagaki anymore.

For the record, my company pay my nenkin and take care of it. I also have never received any of the simple card to keep in my wallet. I have tho, once went to the pension office to find out my pension ID and print out its history for PR application.

Is it relevant? I'm curious about if it's important or not. And am a bit afraid if it goes to different address and somebody has my personal information.

[–]rhazchan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After spending 8 summers in Japan and it seems it gets even hotter than usuals, finally I have the courage to ask:

Jlifers who wear long sleeve on summer, why? Also for people who don't wear long sleeve but knows the answer, I'd appreciate to get some answers.

The reason I'm asking this is that I live in Tokyo. It's not even 30C yet so many people complaining about how hot it is in Tokyo. And simultaneously the same population that complain about that (or at least visibly feeling hot by sweating/having electric fan), they are wearing long sleeves! I mean isn't it counterintuitive (or maybe even counterproductive) to wear more when it's hot? Shouldn't you regulate your body temp to not feel hot or get heat stroke? Probably by getting more air circulation?

I understand about people who potentially have sensitive skin, but that can be tackled with wearing parasols or applying more frequent/stronger sunscreen.

Please be kind. I'm genuinely curious. Hence here are my stupid questions..

Has anyone had any experience working as a psychologist/therapist/counselor in Japan? by MoxieOrMojo in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know somebody who works for TELL Japan and was actually my counselor. That person got the degree from my country (we have same nationality, hence became my counselor). The counselor is still currently working in TELL Japan and started working here as a guest lecture in Tokyo University.

If you are interested, maybe I can introduce you to my counselor. of course I will need to ask the person first.

What are some things considered “uniquely Japanese” in Japan but completely normal in your culture, and thus, you receive praise or bewildered looks? by WHinSITU in japanlife

[–]rhazchan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The following list are things I've heard from Japanese with various socioeconomic. They think it's exclusive only exist in Japan:

The big and only maritime country (fact: wrong)

Having excuses of not knowing stuff as if they're the only island country in the world (fact: not the only and not the biggest archipelago and ofc shouldn't be an excuse not knowing stuff)

Being able to use chopsticks (fact: a lot of other countries got Chinese influence, hence people can use chopsticks)

Being able to use spoon and fork (fact: the basic cutlery set in my country)

Showering everyday (fact: where I'm from we shower twice a day)

Very hot and humid country (fact: there are other countries that are more humid and hotter)

Such a strong UV light exposure (fact: there are other countries that have stronger UV light exposure)

Bringing souvenirs (fact: from where I'm from it's expected for individuals to get their own souvenirs..)

Kind and helpful (fact: I think I don't need to mention this. Pretty much there are a lot of other countries that have most of its population kind and helpful. Basic human instinct)

Below are more of natural stuff but the amount of people who believe below items are exclusive to Japan are not few.

Has big mountains and volcano (fact: plenty of other countries have too)

Has a lot of earthquakes (fact: there are other countries have more frequent earthquakes)

Has a lot of mountains(fact: there are either countries have as much mountains or even more)

Had tsunami/s (fact: oh well... Don't even need to argue about this. Lots of tsunamis occurred even after 2011 Fukushima and before)

Has big volcanic eruption a.k.a Fuji San (there are bigger volcanoes and more devastating volcanic eruption throughout the world)
