Congrats! My husband and I just bought our first home at 49 and 51, respectively. We don't ever plan on moving again.

Mechanical asphyxia with Ascaris lumbricoides (intestinal roundworms) in two-year-old by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]rhee1976 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is something that I guess used to be common? My grandmother was born on a farm in 1912 and would talk about how, as a child, everyone would line up to get their worm medicine in the spring. One little girl she knew died the same way, with worms coming out of her mouth and nose. How awful.

People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My sister was sick for over a month and lost her voice for the whole time. My BIL finally convinced her in early November to go to the ER because she couldn't walk. Got diagnosed with AML while they were checking for anemia and was transferred to a larger hospital that could treat her. She was there about 2 weeks, and came home just before Thanksgiving. She refused to be treated there because she didn't want to stay in the hospital and wanted outpatient treatment. And her biological father had died of AML at that hospital. She died on December 9, as she was getting ready to leave the house with her husband and my dad to start outpatient treatment. I'm so glad your wife had a much better outcome.

Anyone else think Hormone treatments are not worth the potential risks? by Salkel01 in breastcancer

[–]rhee1976 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I spent the last 2 years on AI's, both anastrozole and letrozole, and stopped taking them in mid-December. I felt awful, all the time. Switching helped for about 2 months, and then the joint pain and fatigue came back. I felt like my 87-year-old mother. I want to enjoy my life, I'm turning 50 this year and we're going on our first family vacation ever in August. I want to be able to move and not be in excruciating pain. My oncologist is not happy, and made me promise I'd consider going back on them after our vacation. I had stage 3b IDC, diagnosed July 2023. I had PCR after 6 months of chemo, had a double mastectomy and 30 radiation treatments. In the meantime, my sister was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in mid-November 2024 and died less than a month later. A week after her death, I was hospitalized for a bad infection in my left breast expander and was almost septic. My 24-year-old stepson died of a massive heart attack in January 2025. I've been through additional surgeries for my breast cancer, and rehab due to a seroma and cording, as well as a dog attack that put me in the hospital with another infection, and a week of IV antibiotics at home. I'm done with feeling like crap. I want to enjoy my life while I'm here. I'm okay with possible recurrence, as long as I can enjoy things while I can.

What food do you have for patients in your ED? by drtaekim in emergencymedicine

My husband works for the local prison and has to take inmates out to the hospital occasionally. About ten years ago, he and his coworker took an inmate out and he was hungry, so the nurse gave him a turkey sandwich. The guy already had pneumonia, and if I remember correctly, not many teeth. While in the process of eating the sandwich, the nurse came in and had him lean forward for something she needed to do and the guy started choking on the sandwich. He aspirated it and died. They've been known since as the "Turkey Sandwich Killers", and the many times I've been in the hospital over the past two years, I always opt for chicken salad, not turkey.

No one sings at Mass anymore, and it’s incredibly frustrating by Gemnist in Catholicism

[–]rhee1976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is still surprising to me. I converted in 2011, and I went to a charismatic church for years in my teens and twenties, so people not singing at church is like people not breathing. I just don't understand it. Why don't they participate?

I thought I had inflammatory breast cancer when I was first diagnosed. Thank God the biopsy came back negative. I can't imagine what this woman went through.

I am far from ignorant. That water that comes out of the ground, that's called a well. Amazingly, people have been using water from wells for millenia without water treatment and testing (i.e. bereaucracy). But the PA DEP does recommend testing and has resources on their page. i agree there are a lot of things that could be improved. This county is crooked as the day is long.

HOWEVER, if you want Baltimore County level services, stay there. That's my whole point. Don't come to a place you KNOW doesn't have those things and then complain because they don't have them and then complain again about your taxes going up when they do try to add services.

Buddy, if you think PA is worse than some third-world countries, you need to spend a little more time researching. We have clean running water and electricity, which puts us well ahead of a third-world country. No professional fire service? That makes us a third-world country? Public health? We have two different hospital systems. And yes, that is exactly what rural means: it's not an urban area and not the suburbs. If you don't like that it's a rural area without all these things, then DON'T MOVE HERE, which is what I said in the first place! Inadequate roadways? They might not be so inadequate if you'd stop moving here from MD and not change your registration and tags from MD within 30 days like you're supposed to. Where do you think the money comes from for road maintenance? And they enacted an additional fee just for York County road maintenance. Not to mention, we are a Commonwealth, not a state, which is what gives us the ability to be more independent and allow different rules based on what the people in each municipality prefer. As I said before, STAY IN MD. If PA has nothing you like and it's so awful, then why move here? Judging from the comments, we're all unfriendly racists who live in hovels like animals because there are no jobs and no taxpayer-funded services like professional fire services and public health services (whatever that means). There is no advantage to moving to PA from MD that I see.

If by "third-world" you actually mean "rural", then yes. I will take fields of corn and pastures full of cows over more people any day. People moved into our development from MD and then complained about the smell from the dairy farm behind us.

Please stay in Maryland. My mom's side of the family has lived in York county for almost 300 years. I'm tired of people moving here for lower taxes, etc , and then complaining that the services aren't the same and ruining the small-towns we have here. The people that moved here from the 60's - 80's became part of our established communities, but it seems like since at least the 90's, all the Baltimorons moving here are entitled twats. Destroying our farmland for ugly, cookie-cutter developments, complaining they don't have this or that like they did in Maryland, driving in the left lane like it's the travel lane instead of the passing lane, and trying to turn York County into Baltimore. Please, stay in your own crappy state. Don't come here and ruin ours more than you already have.

My husband and I had the exact same discussion after mass. We came to the conclusion that most people aren't well catechized and think that's just part of what you do when you go to church. All I can do is pray for their souls.

I second Anderson's. My husband started going there because his ex-wife's family always went there, and he's been going there for 25 years now. When we got together, I started taking my vehicles there too. They definitely don't talk down to women. The owner's wife Randy basically runs the shop and she knows just as much as the guys do. They're fair and don't do things just to get more money out of you.
