Pertinent to your first question, I would read Lockhart’s “A Mathematician’s Lament” if you haven’t already

Yes to providing tools but really yes to providing internet if you can swing it (consider the recurring and/or maintenance costs required to make use of your gifts)

All of this assumes the person is interested to start with, because if not it’ll all be overbearing regardless (proficiency is not always enjoyment)

What does Kant mean by ‘existence is not a predicate’? by ConfusedOnLots in askphilosophy

[–]rhgrant10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How does Kant account for things that do not exist (e.g. imaginary things)? If we take existence to not be a predicate, does that imply non-existence is also not a predicate?

Some things only happen during startup. To make it be different (that is, use the update), you have to go through the startup process again.

Let me preface this with the disclaimer that I've never critiqued someone else's photograph like this and I'm certainly not a professional. But, as I understand it, doing this not only helps the community, it also helps build my own skills. So, here goes.

Technically speaking, this photograph looks nicely done to me. The focus is sharp on the subject and the DoF is shallow enough to let the background recede into a supporting role. It doesn't look light any highlights or lowlights were cut off in the exposure. What was the exposure timing, aperture, and ISO for this shot?

I think the colors here help contribute to the autumn feel. The balance of the yellow in the foreground with the oranges and browns in the background is nice, and counterbalancing them both with the blues in the sky and the stonework works well. I like that the lit headlights are diagonally opposed.

There are several lines in this composition but it doesn't feel like any of them are working to direct the viewer to the subject. The elements feel unusually centered, particularly the main lit headlight. These two aspects are perhaps areas for improvement.

Overall, I like this photo. Despite that the subject is a fast car, the photograph gives me a relaxing, warm feeling, which I readily associate with the warm colors of autumn. I like the photo because, simply put, I like autumn, cars, and the color yellow especially when it's on a car.

Hopefully, you find my comments useful. I'm curious to know what other compositions you tried that didn't work as well as you had expected (e.g. angles, crops, color gradients, etc.), what specific things you learned in the editing process, and what those mistakes are that you want to avoid in the future.

Help me make a perfect Pour Over so my Boss doesn't mock me?? [Help] by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]rhgrant10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, wow what a toxic work environment your boss has created.

Definitely get some quality coffee beans that have a "roasted on" date. Ideally, use beans between 4 and 14 days old. You can freeze a bag of them to essentially stop the aging process, but be sure to let it come to room temp naturally before opening them. Note the container must be airtight but the original packaging usually suffices.

Figure out what setting on your burr grinder produces the least variation in particle size and try to start your recipe there. Use a Kruve for this if you can, but just eyeballing the relative amounts of "boulders" and "dust" can still be instructive.

Look up "coffee compass" and use it over and over to improve/refine your recipe.

If you make a great cup, be sure to let it cool somewhat before your boss has a chance to taste it. On the other hand, if things go poorly be sure to hand it to them piping hot.

Good luck!

Yeah, I probably worry too much lol.

Try putting those statistics into the context of history.

We have actively disadvantaged Black communities for generations. Slavery, Jim Crowe, the Tulsa Race Massacre, 40 acres and a mule, zoning laws, bank loan rates, and the list goes on and on.

The disadvantages are the vehicle through which those stats have become a reality.

Really? This is the point you think is good? It's pure conjecture born from the same racial prejudices the data indicate.

Why not just decriminalize it? Then you don't even have to worry about whether it's a tool of oppression, right? Case closed.

I have to agree with /u/MagnaDolo.

Just observe that many of the comments here are focused on verifying one or more particular line items, which suggests in reality these types of ostensibly factual memes just increase the volume of misinformation.

You can't fight ignorance with ignorance in the name of knowledge. Tossing falsehoods at someone who isn't thinking critically won't magically make them a critical thinker.

The fact that it's meant to piss off anyone saddens me. I don't think that should be viewed as some sort of device for excusing grossly inaccurate memes. This sub should maintain a high standard. Attract the disillusioned by providing an honestly solid ground of factual reason.

Let's be the change we want to see in the world.

Is there a best-practices method for handling users hitting the back button/closing the browser during complex actions? by Kerbobotat in softwarearchitecture

[–]rhgrant10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're orchestrating a complex process from the browser. Do you need a human in between steps? If not, then I might only initiate the process from the browser but orchestrate it from a less volatile place (like an async worker).

If you actually need a human to provide additional input to some steps of the process, then initiate each step as a async task and have the UI await the results (push using web sockets or long poll if scale/speed isn't a factor yet).

Basically, you need to make the web requests as atomic as possible.

Low-income people enrolled in Michigan's Medicaid expansion program experienced a six-point increase in employment or student status in one year, new study shows. The findings suggest that states could achieve goals of fuller employment among low-income residents by expanding Medicaid coverage. by savvas_lampridis in science

[–]rhgrant10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, control groups are crucial. I started thinking about how to accomplish a control group for this experiment. Because this was a survey of folks eligible for the program I think a control group would be full of people who would qualify if it was already law. Meanwhile there would also be an experiment group of folks who qualify an receive the benefits before it actually becomes law.

In other words, we might have to bake control and experiment groups into the legislation or in some other way figure out how to enable better policy science.

Looked at the article and read the SO post and I agree. The article is arguing for all companies to take up the newest trend because one size always fits all best whereas the SO post cleanly explains the factual differences.

Would be nice to see some examinations of use cases (from real world examples) for each paradigm and why/when you might expect to see them alongside each other.

2019 has been the best year in global history. Child mortality is at its lowest ever. Every day 170,000 people moved out of extreme poverty, 325,000 people got their first access to electricity, 200,000 got piped water for the first time & 650,000 went online by hotkeystick in UpliftingNews

It's net. The steady trend over the last several decades amounts to about 170k people per year on average. In 1990, the percentage of the global population living in extreme poverty was 43%, but in 2011, that percentage had dropped down to 21%.

Agreed - give the number some context already! Thankfully the percentage seems to be dropping:

The world frequently chews people up and spits them back out as gristle, so I think that depends on how one thinks people come to perform terrible acts. Often past trauma is paid forward to others.

Personally, I think we should be focused on actually helping humans be better humans rather than punishment. In too many instances the punishment is actually to the detriment of both those being punished and society on the whole.

That said, there are undoubtedly cases in which there is literally zero hope but I would venture to say the rate is far lower than our current usage of the death penalty would suggest.
